    Brilliant stuff Cookie - I'm returning to windsurfing after a 20 year break, frankly if this sort of practical demo advice had been around back then I'd probably never have taken so much time off. Now I'm retired but live close to the biggest lake in France (Hourtin) and will be putting this into practice over the next few days - Thank you you are an inspiration !

    Use this in marginal conditions when you have enough wind to just plane but not enough to plane all the way through. I throw the sail to the outside off the turn quickly as i am coming off plane and the board comes around super quick. Still struggling with the rig flip sometimes as i still have the bad habit of looking at my hands.

    Great video. Watched a couple of times. Question on flipping the sail. Should you flip when across the wind so that there is less power. Some of my gybes I find the rig flip is hard as too much power in the sail when clew first.

    • @Cookiesports
      @Cookiesports  Рік тому +1

      If you sail all the way through the gybe to a reach, then try to flip the sail, it will be ripped very quickly as it has further to rotate… If you rotate the sail earlier it will have less to rotate and be easier. (So try doing it closer to a broad reach.👍👍👍

    This is perfect! I came back to windsurfing after 15 years. I never could do a full planing gybe, maybe one reason I stopped windsurfing. And this video is absolutly golden! Had a smooth planing day with my big board and 9,4m² today. I needed to discipline myself to train gybes and gybes and gybes and gybes. Theese tips were perfect to me! I got every single freakin gybe! fast and slow, didn't matter. Totally slow and almost planing through. This took my lightyears away from my old gybe technique. Thank you so much!

    When you do the rig flip it looks like it drops a bit towards the water? Or does it stay upright as you do the disco move? If I let my heavy 7.5m twin cam drop much I wouldn't be able to get it back up. I'm on a narrow smaller volume board and it's a bit of a balancing act to do gybes.

    • @Cookiesports
      @Cookiesports  Рік тому +3

      It definitely drops- it’s like a scooping action. You have to counter balance against the weight of it- we weigh more than or sails- and at this point they’re not powered up so should be easy enough!
      The “discos” part of this is all about the counterbalance! 🙌🙌

    You correctly point out that the basic motions and mechanics are the same for the non-planing, planing, and foil jibes. I didn't fully realize that until I started watching your videos. For years I assumed the planing jibe was much different than the non-planing jibe. Lately I've been practicing the non-planing jibe just like you describe it and carrying the same motions into the planing and foil jibes. That has really helped!

    This technique is useful even in stronger winds when you want to jibe very tightly: once in the correct position (after the 5 H) just put more pressure on the back foot before sheeting in. This raises the nose of the board slightly, allowing it to pivot within a few meters.

    When should I gybe like this please? And at what wind speed do I have to try a lay down gybe to depower the rig please. Or is it not necessary to lay down at all? Gybes are fine in low winds but go pear shaped in higher winds. Thanks

    • @Cookiesports
      @Cookiesports  Рік тому

      Non-planing gybes like this are for when you are not planing, in non-planing conditions.
      Lay done gybe are generally not-necessary, and in fact a lot of people do them wrong and result in powering the sail up- not de-powering!

Practised a few non planing duck gybes as well, although im not sure it will give me the confidence to try ducking in planing conditions! Thank you for this nice video it helps me a lot in learning the full planing gybe. I think my problem is to initiate the gybe way too early with too less speed. You always say 'everything starts upwind' but right now I am struggling to get properly downwind. I don't now what my problem is, maybe it is the chop or me being afraid of going too fast. I don't think you have a video about this so far. I would appreciate.
