If you're gonna daily any sailplane, daily this one. Super docile to fly, decent cross-country performance, as rugged as they come, and it can do aerobatics for when you go to an airshow... bro. Plus they're still making 'em, so parts are no problem.
Guess why we are wearing those silly hats? Forgetting your hat here will land you the hefty a fine of a case of beer for the Club. And yes, people have crashed because they flew without hat and fainted.
ASK 21 is as regular as they come. Does everything from beginner training to aerobatics, every club has one, and it's been in production for 28 years now.
What do you do if that occurs? Do you have enough airspeed at that altitude to 180 and put it down? Do you go full breaks and hope there is enough runway to stop? Didn't hear them radio in that at all, was he giving position reports? Sincerely a curious helicopter pilot.
@@arzosahsothy For winch tow you must have a field of at least 2500ft, more likely 3000-4000. with that length and the steep angle of ascent you can land straight up to 300-350ft when the cable breaks. Above that you can either do a 180 turn or an abbreviated circuit. No need for emergency fields around the airport like with aero tow.
A very satisfying video, even with the vomiting. I hope that doesn't turn you off of doing more videos like this, particularly if you head back to that area again -> going to the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome airshow in the summer is worth the trip.
There's a small airport by my house in Morgantown PA that has little gliders that take off there all the time. I was always curious about flying these things thanks for sharing so I could see inside! Very cool
To help with the motion sickness next time; drink lots of water before you go up, take a leak, then get in the aircraft with a water bottle and sip on it during the flight. This will keep you hydrated, help keep you cool, keep your digestive track moving in the right direction, and keep the contents of your stomach diluted. This trick also works for scuba diving trips on a dive boat when you aren't use to the motion of the ocean.
So what I've learned from this video, is that if you yaw and don't adjust the rudder simultaneously, you'll basically drift the plane. Running in the 90s but Running in the above 1000 feet.
I never get airsick unless I'm looking through a glass tube. I got airsick on the ground on a windy day, just practicing keeping the wings level while the tow plane was getting fuel.
I'm imagining that "yaw string" getting pulled off the windshield mid-air. Just yarn and clear tape... I wonder if that's how it came from the factory lol
The ASK-21 was the only sailplane I was a passenger in. Years ago, in Porta Westfalica, Germany. Turbulences, the plane was goeing 5 m up and 8 m down and 5 m up and 7 m down and so on... At least; I didn't puke.
He reviewed an E38, but they're completely different animals. Mr Regular, if you do decide to review an E39, make sure its a 540i manual. You will be surprised.
It is not easy to get the string steady at the middle at the beginning 😆 all my respect to the instructors for being so patient on that... I was becoming anxious by just watching the video. "Yes that's fine..." he said, just not not demotivate the student on his first flight 😆 I just saw myself in that situation.
I did my intro flight.. and I got scared... I kept looking at the intruments thinking its a car... at one point it was too much to bear and I totally had a brain fog... so shameful :P
Hey RCR i don't know what you do to help with your motion sickness, but speaking from personal experience, ginger ale has saved my skin during my flight training.
How are the avionics powered? Is there a battery on the plane that needs to be charged manually or is there some wind turbine generator charging a battery?
12V lead acid battery. Not too much drain with a sailplane, usually just the radio and electric variometer. Sometimes a GPS/ computer. Trickle charge when not flying.

Nah you should puke into that little white bag instead.
"This is called a yaw string" that's yarn with tape.
But it's very important yarn with tape; every glider has one
And I'm pretty sure they make special versions.
Never heard something more funny .... buddy
You can't get any more high tech than that.
Back in the early 50's my dad was flying the F-80 and this ain't no chit, he used a yaw string.
Almost made it without vomiting until the very end haha.
If you flex your stomach muscles as hard as you can during those zero g moments, it significantly helps cut down on that queasy feeling.
Isn't that what fighter pilots do?
Close. Fighter pilots flex their leg muscles during high-G turns to squeeze blood up to their heads.
Ah,okay,thanks for the reply!
The only thing more nasty than barfing by one's self is watching somebody else do it.
If anyone thinks range anxiety in an electric car is bad... give this a try!

That barf in gratuitous slow motion. Just epic.
Props to the instructor for introducing adverse yaw!
It'd not flying, it's falling with style.
Naaaaa. It's soaring like the hawks.
Naaa, that is is the real flying. Well, I may be biased.
This looks like a hell of a lot of fun!
You're lucky to have had a tow plane instead of a winch. The force and angle of a winch launch would have made this a whole different experience :-)
and a cable break off a winch tow at 100' is really exciting
What do you do if that occurs? Do you have enough airspeed at that altitude to 180 and put it down? Do you go full breaks and hope there is enough runway to stop? Didn't hear them radio in that at all, was he giving position reports? Sincerely a curious helicopter pilot.

I could hear the hesitation/panic after takeoff when he was talking about getting sick. Thats exactly how i get in planes sometimes haha.

the e vario is not in fact unnecessary, the sound enables you to judge your climbing/sinking rate without looking a the vario all the time!

Staying coordinated with a Yaw String: Step on the knot. Longer wings on a glider == greater adverse yaw == needs more rudder input.
