As one of those detractors, I have to object. I wont try to defend those who argue different points of criticism. My criticism was always based on two things that really have not changed despite the fact that they are no longer really hampering the team's success. FIrst, I think his way of "managing players" had some really detrimental effects on particularly the way that the Japanese players contribute to the team. You can forgive a little bit of his errors based on "mere" cultural differences, but even from an Anglo-saxon perspective, when you place shy and naturally quiet players in the spotlight and question their commitment to the team . . . ??? Even today BR has not regained Reo's respect or trust, though Daizen and Kyogo seem to have gotten over it. What kind of a "manager" goes out and deliberately undermines the confidence of their best players, by expressing personal criticisms to the press rather than communicating them in the locker room? and KEEPING it in the locker room? Second, Ive never had a particularly high opinion of his tactical abilities. Much of the problem last season stemmed from a stubborn insistnece on maintaining possession and moving the ball laterally. It took him nearly 5 months to figure out that his players were not suited to that type of game, and do much better in the sort of dynamic contest where you play the ball through the lines a lot, and dont necessarily worry if a ball over the top doesnt come off, and gives away possession. Now to speak in his defense: After the poor start, he DID figure out that his players were suited to a more open style, andhe has changed his tactics accordingly. BR does sem to be a guy who learns from his mistakes, and that can only be a good thing going forward. Hopefully he has changed his tactics in terms of how he "motivates" players, as well. I give BR credit for paring down the team and focusing on a smaller squad with higher potential. That isnt exactly rocket science, but given Celtic's pre-existing approach to signing players, it probably wasnt easy for him to accomplish that. At the end of the day, he has so much sheer talent compared to other SPL clubsthat you cant really evaluate him as a coach based on domestic success. Lets see how the team does in Europe before deciding whether or not we should be awarding plaudits for the performances. I continue to view Rodgers as a somewhat "limited" coach. He certainly isnt a tactical genius, and his passive-aggressive stance towards journalists (as exhibited here) makes me worry that he still is not tempermentally the best possible coach for a team like Celtic. But he is good enough for this level. He's earned my acceptance and loyalty, even if Im still not a huge fan.

We destroyed Sevco at a canter and we’re second in the champions league table and playing some brilliant entertaining football. Dortmund will be a tough test along with the next two champions league games. We may get beat but there’s a lot of positives so far and the team are getting better all the time. There’s pace and strength in the squad and greater tactical awareness on attacks up front.
