When my now teenage son was a baby, this was his calm down song. I would sing it through x2 then just hum the tune. By the end of the humming he was either calm or asleep.
This is my favorite Christmas carol/hymn. I have fond memories of hearing and singing this song as a child and also when my daughters were children, I would sing this lovely song to them while putting them to bed for the night. It is such a beautiful lullaby! To answer your question, I am an American and am only familiar with the first version that you played. This hymn is soothing, peaceful, and joyful. Thank you!
The Mueller tune is the one I grew up with. I have always thought it sounded like a lullaby. I have wonderful memories of singing this every Christmas Season with my mom. She would always say, "This isn't just a Christmas song. " ❤
I just found your channel, I love it. I love hearing the history of hyms and carols and paying attention to the message they bring. Thank you so very much.
Cradle Hymn I heard later in life. Your story singing for dementia patients, I can relate, as when I was in college as an undergrad, I was with a group that sang hymns for a couple nursing homes. The familiar hymns related and brought joy to the residence, and a feeling we helped brighten the day for them.
I love the "rocking" effect of the Kirkpatrick tune (the second one). When I'm playing it on organ, as I will be on Tuesday night, I have to take care not to let the words make me emotional and tearful. In the past it's all gone a bit wrong because of that!
My father is 91 and has dementia but he really loves and responds to music and loves Christmas with child like enthusiasm. Even though he doesn't remember much he does know the words to these hymns. It touched me to think that as a Christian, he too is one of God's dear children.
As a child in the 1950s in western Sydney, NSW I first started Sunday school at 4 years old & I learnt that song to the second tune but in later years we sing the more prettier version I think which is the first one you played. We also learnt & fit us for heaven to dwell with You there. It is one of the oldest loveliest christmas hymns of my childhood & yes, there were actions. Most of the songs I remember from childhood came with actions!! Some are still sung today but others forgotten. We also had candles back then as the world was not so woke as it is today!!
I have sung both versions from childhood which one first I can't recall. And fit us for Heaven to live with Thee there is in keeping with the Bible's teaching of complete sanctification or holiness. (See Hebrews 12:14) We will go to Heaven only after the first resurrection and only if we are fit to live there by the Holy Spirit's enabling power. (See 1Thessalonians 4:13-18)
My twin sister and I sang this as early as two or three years old. My mom captured us as toddlers on cassette tape singing it, and one of us sang, “the little Lord Jesus, asleep on the ‘cake.’” The other twin looked at the twin who sang ‘cake’ with such disdain, and replied, “Caaaake??? It’s laaaake!!!” We were both soooo wrong. ☺️☺️. We laugh about it to this day.
(And fit us for heaven to live with thee there)..........He completes what He started in us❤
My brother had dementia. When he no longer remember his sisters, he could sing along with hymns from our childhood. God is good!
Thank you, dear Brother, for bringing the Spirit through music.

Thank you . God bless you endlessly! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻✝️.
We normally sing the first. But this year our Choir learnt the second one. Both are precious 💕. And ours say ,fit us for heaven.
Thanks!
Same thing! Brother in law sang along ! It was his last Christmas here!
Thank you. I truly appreciate your bringing forward these ______
I cannot find any one word that could fill that blank
I love your videos, Luke! I hope you and your loved ones have a wonderful Christmas season!
I remember as a child and adult singing it always with hand motions. Made it even more special
Thank you this is so interesting

Lovely. Thank you.
Thank you so beautiful
Be near me Lord Jesus I Ask Thee to stay. I sing this part really wanting Him to stay.

We sang the first one.
Love these. I have a beautiful Christmas song on a cd from Our daily Bread. It's called How far is ut to Bethlehem. Would love for you to do that 1.😊
Second tune is more commonly sung in the UK 🇬🇧
I grew up singing this hymn to "Mueller", and was very surprised that there was another commonly used tune.
For me it was Kirkpatrick that was always sung, and hearing "Mueller" for the first time was such a surprise! Yet I think both work so well.
Definitely sang the first version. I've only heard the 2nd version on the radio.
