How to make Gems from Plastic Bottle Caps - Easy DIY Recycle/ Eco-Friendly Tutorial

- Want to save the planet a little and turn some trash into treasure?! Then this is a tutorial about how you can turn bottle caps into some cool looking faux/ fake gems or jewels (though realistically you could turn them into anything that you have a mould for - anything from cameos, to stars, to shells - there are plenty of silicone moulds out there you can get rather cheaply that you could use.
And the best thing, most of what I used in this video I had laying around the house. The only thing I needed to collect were the bottle caps!
These are honestly so lightweight and perfect to add to armour (armor) or some sort of accented or jewellery piece on your next cosplay.

Best jewelry HDPE project I have seen so far! Will share on my blog!
Thank you!
What a brilliant idea, im going to give it a go!!!! Thanks for sharing
Pleasure! It’s super easy to do!
Pretty cool I didn't know you can do that with bottle caps. If I want to paint them. Should I prime it first?
I would say yes :) but I know I’ve used spray paint directly on something like this before and it was fine.
How fun! I imagine this could be used to replicate a miriad of items. Love the sandwich press idea.
It's been long enough that I cannot remember the toxicity of particular plastics when heated to melting point. It's always a good idea to wear eye protection & work in a well ventilated area. (That was to keep my conscious clean. If you'd ever read the incident reports that I have, you'd understand.)
Fair enough! Because of this type of plastic, it is non-toxic at these levels.
I wasn't looking for this... but now i know what to do this afternoon to add to my current cosplay projects
Hahaha nice! Have fun giving it a go!
Such a cool idea Kirilee, I have shared with some crafty friends.
Awesome! Thank you!
@@KirileeCosplay Hello Kirilee, do you know where to get the silicone molds from, seems the only thing missing for me to go ahead and make these.
amazing
Thanks
Amazing
Thank you
brilliant Thank you\
Pleasure
Very cool but were can I get the mold ?
I got it from an arts store but you can search for it on aliexpress, eBay or amazon
@@KirileeCosplay Thank you so much, your videos are really helpful for my own cosplay!
That is so awesome. Thank you
Not what I was looking for, but super neat anyway!
Thanks all the same!
🥰🥰🥰💖😱
I’m glad you liked it!
This is SUCH A COOL IDEA
Thank you so much!
Neat I don't do cosplay but the possibilities are endless!
Yes! I’ve already had someone tell me on another platform that they will maybe use this to create gem tokens for a Renaissance festival
@@KirileeCosplay that's not a bad idea or maybe just costume jewelry you can get any silicone mold also

Ok
Omg this is so cool! Thanks for sharing this idea 💕 now I need a sandwich press to try this 😂😂
You can do the same effect with a heat gun instead if you have that- the sandwich press is just easy because you have heat from both sides ^_^
Putting them in the oven would probably work too.
I'm saving your video! Easiest way to transform bottle caps! Thanks for sharing.
Awesome! Thank you!
Could I use an iron instead of a sandwich press?
Yes - just make sure the baking paper is wrapped all around. :)
Gems!
Indeed!
👍
Thumbs up to you too
Cool I always wanted to melt bottle caps and making it into something else
Yessss.... melt the bottle caps :) It is fun.
This is sooo cool and a great way to reuse recycled materials, thanks a bunch for sharing this
My absolute pleasure!
Saving the world
OMG my grandma and grandad are coming up tomorrow and I am going to make this as a gifted for then
Cool!
Could you please teach us how to make earring with this method . Thanks
Drill a small hole through the top and thread the earring
Could I drill a hole through these gems to feed Jewelry wire through these gems?
Yes quite easily.
This is such a cool idea. They look amazing.
Thank you :)
Oh, that's pretty nifty. Question though. Any idea how to effectively remove the liner out of caps with them? I know for a fact that Coke and other brands use HDPE now for their caps so we can use reliable colors.
I have used a sharp piecing tool to wriggle it out
but what if u dont have a sandwitch press thingy?
You can make do with an iron
I love this idea alot!!! Do you have a link to were you got the jewel mold though?
Thanks!
The mould was a while ago but you can get similar ones of eBay, Amazon, aliexpress or evening on craft stores
Can I use clear nail polish to seal it and make it shiny?
Sure!
Cool! What could you use the gems for? My mind is drawing a blank.
Detail on armour and prop pieces or even in jewellery or on the costume itself
Try not you lose the smaller parts Bc there now Micro plastics and very dangerous to the environment
True
Would this idea work with silicone molds for beads? I'm curious about how this would play out....
It could work but might be a bit fiddly as it doesn't get to a liquid state
@@KirileeCosplay I would grind the plastic into tinier pieces to make sure they create that bead like shape.
would this work with a heat press?
I believe so - the it is just good to have heat on both sides
but how much energy is uset to melt the plastic in the first place?
it's easy using 1600-2200W
Thanks for answering your own question?
I'm so excited about this like I'm soooooooo excited
They are super easy! Have fun!
Nice 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Thanks 😊

What an amazing idea, I love it 😍
Thank you! ^_^
Fumes?
None at all!
I love it! I will be looking for a sandwich press at the thrift stores.
Awesome! It is an easy craft for sure
*_* awesome idea
Thank you!
Does anyone know if the fumes from heating these is safe?
As mentioned in the video, there are no toxic fumes from the plastics that are mentioned specifically in this video
How cool!
Thanks!
Excellent. Thank you!!!

Love this, thank you for sharing

Dis isn't safe for the earth
How so? We are taking a product that is already in existence and rather than putting it into landfill, we are changing it into something that can be reuse/ repurposed.
Great idea!
Thank you!
SO COOL
Thanks!
