Thank you, you're right. The time Brian gives they're still in the middle of Vader's interview. This helps.
Jim I want 500 more of these videos. Your insight is something else.

@Jonathan Hudgins I always hated Cornette, I have to say I have gained much respect for him. Now I can't stand shawn michaels !
@@tomr3422 ⁰
Imagine for a second if vader just said "fuck it" and started working like it was Hansen instead of hbk lol
This is what I was praying for the whole time I was watching.
You do realise near the end he does power moves more harshly then in the beginning but didn't go full hog,! I wish he did too!
Yes what did he have to lose? He should of just beat the brakes off his ass for REAL
stlouisflix1 HBK would’ve whooped Vader just like he did those 12 marines in Syracuse.
@@SpaceGhost92 yeaaaaah I bet. Lol one vader tater and hbk would be leaking
Shawn Michaels was like that kid who tried to bully you and ran to the principal when you tried to fight him.
@Reality Check He quite literally was. There is no ground to argue otherwise...
Not like, IS ! 😂
Yeah lol shoves you in front of all his friends then you haul off and knock him down and he gets pale and scared gets up and walks away then everyone starts calling him names and don't like him from that point on. Lmfao.
Exactly Shawn Michaels was placated by Vince McMahon and that's why he was so difficult
Michaels was a wuss. And wrestlers who idolize him KNOWING this are even worse
One takeaway I get from this video is that despite his intense dislike of Shawn Michaels, he is more than willing to give credit if the guy truly is talented. That's why it's easier to believe and side with ol'Corny in certain arguments.
Nobody never said Shawn Michaels couldn't work.. Dude can wrestle like hell but he was very hard to work with which cause a lot of great matches.. If Shawn wasn't an a** to people we would have some of the greatest pro wrestling matches of all time.. We was robbed of that because of his sh_tty attitude..
@@kenrickeason i definitely think you can see that in the second half of his career when he cameback when he attitude wasn’t a problem
@@JMA_21 Not arguing that.. Just thank about the matches we could have had in the 1990s if he had the 2000s attitude..
Probably but I think alot of the ways Michaels got over in the era was his attitude and cockiness. Hindsight is 20/20. I just wonder how much of Cornettes commentary is stifled by his personal dislike of Michaels.
@@kenrickeason Imagine how happy Bret would have been.
"He's hitting me like I'm a goddam mark!"
That popped me hahaha 😂
No disrespect to Vader, but when someone stinks unbearably (according to literally everyone), refuses to wash their gear (which is as disrespectful to your co-workers as what Michaels did) at a job you are forced to be touching them constantly the way wrestlers have to, I can't blame Michaels for having a short temper working with him. That's disgusting and would be enraging to deal with.
Plus he was constantly working much too stiff and most of the time he was out of shape. Bret said working with Vader was like wrestling a sack full of shit.
If Shawn Michaels disliked somebody he would bury them on camera, if Bret Hart had an issue with someone he would take care of it behind the scenes. Michaels sucks. Hart rules.
facts! One of the many reasons why Bret was beloved in the locker room and respected by everyone including guys like Taker and HBK (during this period) was despised.
The irony of it being Michaels who did Vince's Montreal Screwjob for him..
I don’t know about all that he had the biggest public Moment ever writing WCW in the air and spitting Vince’s face full in front of the world so no he was just as bad if not worse then Micheals! Shawn went till he could t no more Bret just bitched out period!
@@tammyforbes2101 Mmm very different circumstances. Shawn threw hissy fits all through the 90's, Bret gets screwed by his boss and flips out. Bret never was unprofessional in the ring or certainly didn't act like Shawn did
In Shawn's 2nd run he put a lot of people over and had some great matches. Most Shawn haters conveniently ignore his 2nd run for some reason.
"The man they call Vader!" Translation: Vince wanted to change his name to something stupid but was talked out of it.
The mastodon wasn't stupid
@KaneMagus "The Mastodon" is actually a pretty cool nickname for Vader IMO. But it would have been pretty stupid to actually make that his ring name lol
@@juansanchez209 It would have been cool as a nickname but as his in ring name.. That would have been stupid..
yeah the Mastodon, in hindsight Leon himself even stated he probably felt he shouldn't have fought Vince so hard to keep the Vader name and just use the name, feeling Vince would have been more willing to use "one of his creations" then a name from another place...
@@Avalon64 should have been used as a Nick Name.. while still being Vader..
He couldn't out Hogan, Hogan. 😆
Hogan is the blueprint of politics in Pro Wrestling..
That doesn't work for me, brother
Nobody out Hogans, Hogan, brother.
I was in the 8th row at this show and I could hear Shawn screaming move. It was crazy!
What was the crowd thinking at that point collectively? Like were most people smart and just thinking “holy shit”? Or were people just confused
How did you manage to not laugh so hard you almost induced respiratory failure?
This was my first Cornette watch along. I really enjoyed that. Very insightful and entertaining.
Go back and watch Jim cornette's watch a moon of the 1992 Royal rumble you will really enjoy it
Cornette shares his wrestling wisdom in such a uniquely eloquent, profanity-laced recounting. He may actually be the best storyteller ever in the business.
That's what Jim cornette does best is the best
For people without the network, you can go watch the dailymotion version. Just start at the beginning when they say start.
@Inti Cheveyo The version I watched was the same.
Thanks mate.
i just googled "shawn michaels vader summerslam" and the full match came up in a video block. the time is 29;42 and it's the full uncut match that they're commenting. good quality too thankfully. and there are a lot of audio cues you can use to make sure you're in sync with them - right before the bell listen for corny to talk about merch (hbk's heart-shaped glasses and lawler's crown), then his point about how soft the lockup is after the bell. shoutout to the OP for pointing this out! it's definitely worth watching with their commentary.
Thanks!
that survivor series 96 crowd when Syd made his entrance....amazing lol.
I remember watching that match some years ago and noticed how Sid was getting cheers lol I think it could have been the beginning of attitude era cause people might have been tired of shawns boy toy gimmick. Plus this was the same PPV the rocks blue chipper self debuted in and we know die rocky die came after that
Credit where credit is due. Shawn gave Sid the best match of his career that night. Awesome PPV when you've got that and Austin vs Bret 1 on the card, and also the historic debut of Rocky.
Go back a few years to the Royal Rumble when he tossed Hogan out. The WWF crowds always seemed to want to cheer him.
Sid. Not Syd.
I love how even JR was like "Sid has a pretty good fanbase here."
One of the few times that I can remember pre-Attitude WWF acknowledging an established heel getting pops from the crowd. WWF was still firm with the "good guys are good, bad guys are bad" narrative at the time.
RIP Sid.
Jim putting himself over for his promo before the watch along is great 😂
At the end Mr. Perfect was "I'm outta here MacMahon I can't take this!" lol
Had this synched perfectly, no glitches, it was great😂
Indeed
Leon lost. That was the other thing. You know, Frankenstein kicked a few villagers’ asses first to get over.
I was at SS 96. First ppv I ever went to. I was 14. Will never forget that show. I remember being so pissed about the boiler room brawl. I was in the nose bleeds and the crew brought TVs out to ringside for the fans to watch. We had the big screens above the lights for us but for me to be there specifically to see the undertaker and then not be able to see the undertaker, I was very disappointed.
I was there too, 12 years old. The Boiler Room Brawl was definitely a letdown. We were in seats that were too low to have a good view of the arena screen above, and too far away from the classroom TV carts that they wheeled out. So we could barely tell what was happening. Just some shapes moving around on the tiny screens and the sound of Mankind grunting and metal crashing. 😆
Dear Jim Cornette
Please do HUNDREDS more of these watch-alongs. Please NEVER stop.
I just seen this while scrolling and hot damn my PS4 is updating and my phone is what im typing on so i cannot watch along the watch along as i am supposed to watch a watch along... or whatever the fuck.
I love this dude. I remember hating the fuck out of you as a kid, so props to you from a nobody in NB Canada.
To hear your insights like this, from the era I grew up watching, is i think something i have always wanted.
So thanks a shit ton. I very much enjoyed this and hope for many many more.
All I can ever think is what a terrible waste Vader was in wwe he could of gone so much further. Believable monster
If they would have had him work with another big guy that could show him how to work the right way Vs someone that was just interested in themselves
@@tomr3422 vader could work just fine. The mistakes he made here were out of being completely flustered and trying to please someone who didn't want to be pleased!! Fucking Shawn michaels!!!
@@JackG79 can't lie, as a kid in 96 I liked Shawn, but seeing what a duche he was back then & how he'd go into business for himself all the time pisses me off.
@@JackG79 pfff what??? What are you talking about?? The guy injured a bunch of wrestlers! He even admit he allegedly hurt and injured wrestlers. He once cried backstage because he paralyzed his opponent (he recovered afterwards but still). He also rarely washed his wrestling gear so lots of wrestlers had problem with that. Huge respect for the Big V, love the memories, kind man and all, but to say he was a good worker is a huge overstatement.
It started in WCW with Hogan in WCW and the fight with Orndorff. Was never really the same IMO
I'll never look at 90s Shawn Michaels the same way again
Why
Vince McMahon commentating during any of babyface mid 90’s HBK’s matches were borderline pornographic😂that’s why I always thought there was at least a little truth in the long standing rumors of them having a “special” relationship. It truly was disturbing hearing a man gush over a guy dancing and prancing like a chipendale dancer. I’ll leave it at that.
@bigevilworldwide1 BS, the boys in shoot interviews bring it up
Bret: "You may have barebacked your way through some kind of main events... one pay-per-view after another..." XD
@@M0gM00gle So smarks and guys who got fired and have an axe to grind.
@bigevilworldwide1 The Road Warriors are not smarks. LOD has mentioned the "special" relationship.
@bigevilworldwide1 C'Mon you would have to be on drug (like a lot of the boys) to not look twice at Stephanie in the 90's when she was a real girl vs the plastic shadow she is now
I could watch endless hours upon hours of Cornette walking through matches. It's so interesting hearing how it all works. Please never stop doing these!
Shawn went to Vince and buried him anyway, looking back Vader should’ve beat the breaks off of him.
"Move ! *kick* Move ! *kick* A hole" - Shawn Michaels
I watched this with my dad growing up. As much as he used to tease me about it being fake, I can’t believe neither of us picked that up.
Mil Maska kicking Vader like that knowing full well Vader could tear him limb from limb if he wanted too.
Timestamp? Lol
Great episode, and a great analogy at the end. Cornette is a master of Professional wrestling.
HBK seems like the worst human being. I don't buy that he " changed" watch Summerslam v Hogan.
His peers from today and from his past say otherwise. But what do they know, right!?
@@desisdosis473 Some of his peers have said he's still a dick (Hurricane, Stevie Richards, RVD)
This particular watch along is a perfect insight into why NXT is the way it is. HBK teaches the master class. Bad habits, melo drama, and nothing looks like a struggle.
@travis ozechowski No, no I don't. Not even in my top 50.
@travis ozechowski A huge problem w/ wrestling is HBK's influence. Everyone has no character or personality, just wanna have good matches. AKA 'The Showstopper.' Everyone tries to emulate the 'Taker/HBK match from WM25. They've all got their '4 star' pocket they stay in. NXT has been always been overrated since Dusty passed away. It's unbearable now w/ this dudes fingerprints all over it. BTW, since Dusty passed, have they created anyone of interest?
@@dirtmcgirt8269 That’s ur top 50. In general Shawn will always be somewhere at the top of that list for the WWE/WWF. That’s a fact.
Please more of these watch alongs rather then AEW reviews!!!!! This is so interactive and fun. I loved watching this in real time with Jim running through it in real time!
Or better still a couple of AEW watchalongs might be pretty entertaining.
whoever’s idea it was to start these Corny watchalongs... a sincere thank you is in order. it’s even more fun watching stuff he likes along with him than it is to hear him tear apart the modern product
This was a fantastic, entertaining, yet simple idea. Jim Cornette in a nutshell, and i mean this in the absolute best way possible. I need more of this.
He actually gives HBK a lotta love during this match, but he is also honest about Shawn being an A-Hole too lol
Well let's be honest shawn fkd his run up
@@chrisortiz8072 Not really. The ratings and house show attendance were up from the previous year.
@@GrayRedRoom yeah, up slightly from their worst year ever, with their lowest drawing champ ever...
@@johnthomas5314 I agree HBK wasn't all that, but records say Kevin Nash was the worst drawing Champ ever.
@@tomr3422 Actually the worst drawing champ was Eddie Guerrero, they did the statistics on it recently. Nash and HBK weren't setting the world on fire either, but they did draw more than some of the later guys when house show business was in the real gutter.
Even as a fan back then. I saw this match like wtf? They made Vader look weak as hail
Gimme a hail yea
Man this match was tragic...after walking 6 miles roundtrip to the local videostore to rent the PPV before where Vader pinned Shawn and walking 6 miles again the next day cause I JUST HAD TO SEE their single match (and I was behind Vader HARD to kill HBK (who I hated) at the next PPV...the guys who ran the store were fans and we used to discuss outcomes and such...I put the tape on their counter, the guy looked at it and kind of grinned "What'd ya think?"
"That match was BULLSHIT." was all I could say...
He couldn't whip cream with an outdoor motor haha i got to remember that
It's one of my favs from jim
"outboard motor"
38:00 I love Jim's impression of Vince on HBK. Absolutely hysterical.
18:51
I quit drinking that night, so this will always be memorable.
Shawn did the long shine at the beginning the of match for 2 reasons
1. To make himself look good
2. To blow up Vader so when it was his turn to build heat he looked slow and worse compared to Shawn.
Shawn did this kind of shit with big opponents like Vader and Diesel etc, to make them look bad and himself better by comparison.
People say Hogan was one of the most selfish people in wrestling, well Shawn was not far behind him.
Shawn is way ahead of hogan and every other wrestler in terms of being a prick. Well 90s Shawn not 2000s shawn that shawn was fine.

rubbish, the idea was the fast small guy goes for it and it lasts 5 mins before falling apart. Matches dont go from 1 thing to just 1 other thing then finish.
Takes and insane amount of talent to direct a match like that.
This was great...I wanna hear a watchalong for Bulldog vs Bret at In Your House where Bret bled a gusher in a great match, also Corny had his awesome Santa Claus racket head cover.
The constant burial of The Clique throughout this clip is kinda funny because 3 of them were already gone and Triple H still wasn't important enough to matter. And he was a heel anyway, so he wouldn't have been working with Vader regardless.
Can you do more of these watch alongs, great viewing , great insight 👍👍
Agreed.
and do them by Friday I got no plans for the week end
Yes, he mentioned he's gonna do it regularly on the Drive-Thru
I was actually there at The Survivor Series for HBK vs Sid. I thoroughly enjoyed booing the shit out of Michaels lol.
Shawn was intentionally trying to outrun and expose Vader. This was just as much a "fuck you" to Vince as anyone else. He's leveraging Vince's main event against him.
"If you give me guys to work with like this, this is the shit you're going to get on the show."
Pretty awesome watching the match side by side with Cornette's commentary, definitely gives a new perspective. Still impressive that Vader could moonsault like he did with his size and age (41 at the time)
"Leon was being Leon" = Vader legitimately beating the fuck out of his opponent with more potatoes than a French fries factory.
These are fuckin' terrific! I agree please do 1000 more of these. What insight!
Would love to see a watch along for Bret vs Bulldog, IYH December 1995. Brilliant match

Love this! We need more! So entertaining! Thank you Corny and Brian!
I can't blame the crowd for turning on HBK and cheering for Sid. If I had known about how HBK was backstage and how he buried Vader, I would have wanted to cheer for Sid too
yeah, the more I learn of how things were back then, FUCK shawn!! Vader was a beast, one of the greatest big men of all time..
Bret mentioned in his book Shawn threatening to fire Vader if he stiffed him again, and he wrote you had to be careful with the monsters in the business. They could destroy guys like Bret and Shawn anytime they wanted and were doing them a favor by letting guys like Shawn and Bret beat them.
The only thing I knew about this match prior was Vader not moving for the elbow drop. Now I have a whole new perspective on this match and I think it's pretty cool. It's nice hearing about the behind the scenes to some of these matches.
The Vader vs Shawn Michaels match has been one a lot of fans were curious about. Shawn was pissed lol!
"How much does this guy weigh?" :D
*If you don't have WWE network, you can Google this match and it's in Dailymotion*
This was a really cool watch along. Gives new perspective to the match. It’s interesting that in the 2000’s, Shawn did some kinda commentary on his match with Sid at SS 96, and he noted that he didn’t get Sid’s style then (which I took to mean big guys in general) the way he does now, and how in hindsight he would’ve had a completely different match with Sid today. I’d also be interested in a Cornette commentary on Something like Shawn vs Batista from On Night Stand 08 to see how it compares here.
Shawn Michaels just better be glad Vader really didn't potato him.
I would definitely be interested in more of these. This was fantastic.
Only time that level of disrespect was matched, I think, was Randy Orton and Kofi Kingston. When Orton yelled "stoopid!" and kicked Kofi for getting up. At least Kofi got his time.
These watch alongs are GOLD. Keep them coming. You guys are on to something.
Thoroughly enjoyed this, hopefully Jim and Bryan do more of this
Seriously love this idea! Gives me something to do I truly enjoy within the 4 walls I have grown accustom too! Entertaining, informative, fun.. it does. It get much better... 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
This was fantastic. I can’t wait for more of these from the 90’s. Can I suggest Bret vs Yoko Wrestlemania X
I guess if you over sell everything people would refer to you as great seller
Not necessarily,
Plenty of over the top sloppy sellers today, mimicking Shawn & Bret who arent consider great sellers.
@@ghostprotocol89 Bret not a grest seller? What?
@@aaronjackson9385 Didnt say that. Im saying like Elvis or MJ, How elelments of them are mimicked all the time in modern music, HBK & Bret being 2 of the GOATs, Today's GEN are stuck on attempting to mimick their entire move sets & mannerisms.. & a MAJORITY of the time, the people trying to pull it off are no where near the calibur of HBK or Bret, therefore it comes off sloppy & like kids playing 1995 WWF in their living rooms.
@ Ghost Protocol I couldn’t agree with you more.
Should do this on the Hell in a Cell HBK vs Taker..
Yes the first hell in a cell was a great match
Probably in the minority but to me this is still HBK's best match, the best Taker/HBK match and the best HITC.
@@thworldisyours I think I might agree with you. I was a big HBK fan, and I didn’t think there was anyway he was getting out of that match with the victory. Combined with Kane’s intro, what a great time that match was.
That was genius! Loved hearing Cornette's commentary about the match. Though, now I have to go back and watch a WCW Vader match
"You can't out Hogan, Hogan"
Ain't that the truth
Cornette please bring back this show 🙏
I watched the full match on the WWE UA-cam channel on my phone while listening to this on my IPad 😂👍🏻
This was an excellent watch along! The best watch along I’ve ever seen and I learned so much, even as a jaded old school fan who thinks he knows it all. Jim - to tell you something you already know - you are a brilliant wrestling mind, not that you need or care for my opinion but man that was some awesome insight! And the fact that almost all of it was from memory, wow man. Impressive. More 90s WWF!
Loved this. Do more watchalongs. Jim does a great job.
amazing , more of this watch-along series please. P.S. jim looked like bryan cranston during this match
Wonder what would have happened to "HBK" If he pulled that shit with "The UNDERTAKER"?
I will say this about Vader - his run in the WWF was my first exposure to him, and he came across as a monster to me.
Oh dude. That was nothing. Check out his WCW or Japan stuff
Seeing only his WWF stuff was like seeing him neutered compared to WCW or Japan.
Best commentary of a match I've ever seen. Honestly. I used to really love Shawn Michaels, but I really dont have the respect that I used to have for him after seeing this match. I've seen almost all of his matches but hadn't seen this, I lost a lot of respect for Shawn.
The Fluorescent Couple in the matching warmups!! Yes! I’ve watched a few shows in this era and they’re always there. They always look like they just randomly came to a wrestling show from playing tennis at the country club.
Jim and Brian I always love your podcast. I remember that ppv where Shawn yelled at Vader. What is more messed up is Vince was right there in commentary. He yelled move so loud everyone heard it. Again exposing the business which wasn't done back then.
I couldn't agree more when Jim talks about the sterile stage entrances where everyfuckinbody has to do their exact walk down the aisle and pose and do the same goddamn thing every time they come out. What are they robots? It's so infuriating when two wrestlers are in a heated feud but once they come out they have to do their signature posing. Bullshit.
I'm laughing already just for the title of the video, imagining Jim's reaction 🤣 😂
I side with HBK on most of this. Obviously he didn't want Vader to get over, and that's bullshit. But at the same time, Jim is acting insulted that Vader had to work "gently", even as he points out that Shawn was selling it very well anyway. So basically, Shawn is teaching him "this isn't Japan, you don't have to knock my head off, just throw a punch and I'll make you look great". Jim even says "Leon's punches still look good". But Jim is getting mad that THE WWF CHAMPION, WHO THE WHOLE COMPANY IS BEING BUILT AROUND, doesn't want to get potatoed all night by a guy twice his size.
Could Shawn have made Vader look better? Yup, but he obviously didn't want to. Could Vader have worked safe every night? Yup, but he obviously didn't want to.
Nah, you’re off base.
@@christophmatthews4313 if you aren't offering anything to the discourse other than "you're wrong because I say you are", what are you doing?
He over sold the shit out of Hogan it was supposed to be a three series with Shawn winning.
I listened to this three weeks ago I watched the full match 3 days ago and it's highly entertaining to think about
I will never understand why Vader left WCW for WWF he should have stayed there or go back to Japan
Sting, Lex Luger, Vader, Ron Simmons, "Dr. Death" Steve Williams & the Steiner Brothers all should have never signed with the WWF/E.
Sting at the end of his career I think was an okay move I just wish they hadn’t put him in there with Seth Rollins to get buckle bombed into retirement I cannot tell you how happy I am that WWE banned that move.
Vader was in the old Monday Night Nitro intro (Vader was in the intro at the screaming part which would later replaced with Lex Luger in that spot) despite never appearing on Nitro.
He left WCW because he was fired after the infamous Paul Orndorff fight.
“…couldn’t whip cream with an outboard motor.” Please tell me that there’s a Cornette Compendium somewhere to retain these gems for posterity.
I'd have understood Vader being more concerned about the Kliq's stroke when Hall and Nash were there, but by Summerslam they and Waltman had gone. Helmsley meant nothing at that point, so Michaels was making threats with zero backup.
Hbk was such a cancer to the intire locker room !
Love these, please keep doing them!
Can you guys do a watch along for the Montreal Screwjob?
It's over, Johnny.
"Any questions.. class?"
I would DIE to be in a historical wrestling class at a university if it was taught by Dr. James E Cornette
Nothing brings me more joy than hearing Brian Last's countdown. He announces each number with a tone and cadence as if what he's saying has some deep meaning. It's hilarious.
Wanna see Jim react to Smackdown women’s karaoke 🎤 😂
he probably didn’t mind cause from what I heard he’s not a fan of women’s wrestling

joe hilner oh okay thank you, I thought he didn’t like women in the ring at all
I was there as a kid and thought it was awesome. It's weird how much more is going on than what you see.
Just watched an interview on youtube with Bruce Pritchard regarding this match and the fallout, Pritchard says the likes of Bret hart and john cena would be unprofessional in that moment when Vader didn't move, apparently hogan wouldn't do it. In my opinion I very much doubt Bret hart would do such a thing, Bruce Pritchard seems to me to be an unhonest WWF mark, or should I say a Vince mcmhan kiss arse, heard Pritchard a few times and yea he obviously knows what has happened but he spins it his or Vince's way, he is lacking a spine in my opinion, god bless Jim cornette for telling the truth
Bret would have been annoyed but he wouldn't have been unprofessional in the ring. He might have chewed someone out backstage, but he would do his best to make sure nobody watching the match would notice something might have gone wrong.
Old Brother Love will never bury Shawn, nor will he bury Vince. He always justifies the WWE position and is an unreliable, but entertaining, narrator.
@@Kwert I could see Bret doing one of his forward elbow drops and then whispering to Vader to move when he came down on the mat. I don't recall ever hearing Bret talking in the ring, and remember, he had to deal with a doped up Bulldog who forgot the entire match at Summerslam. I'm sure Vader would have been fine. Bret was a professional. Shawn wasn't.
Bret wouldn't, but we'd be hearing about it everytime he opened his mouth.
Its all makes sense now.
The match was great at the start, then Shawn getting pissed off because Vader forgot the spot. It all goin downhill from there, the front row crowd looks confused, vader looks pissed off tok because he can’t work as usual.
My first time watching Wath along series, gonna be my fav show in youtube for now.
I wonder if Andre was still alive, and could have wrestled. Would Shawn have tried to this crap on him? Because if he did something tells me Andre would have said enough , knocked Shawn out then pin him. As I heard that if Andre did not like you he would make you look like fool.
