One of my favorite things with the banjo is when you come back to a song that you learned but it’s been a little while so you have to sort of refigure it out and that’s when you come up with some of the more fun embellishments it seems
I think your right about simple tabs. I have a copy Mel Bay's 'Frailing an instruction manual'. It's a great old book and very informative, but the tab for Pretty Polly is much more complicated than Justin's/yours . It sounds good, but your version sounds really good as well, and much easier to learn.
Hi I think we could be related, my father was Clayton Hicks and my Mother was Mabel Hicks for a short time, they had a daughter, her name was Polly Ann Hicks at one time too... and all from Tennessee I hope yo hear from you soon. Polly Ann Ballestero previously Hicks 😉
2 songs 😱. I've been feeling like i need to slow up as well. Im 6 months in and working on up picking, down picking, 6 songs and 3 different tunings. I am also doing drills for skipping notes, galax licks and clucks. Sometimes i feel like the banjo is gonna put me in a wheelchair. This advice scares me, that i will never be good
Amen, with regard to tabs. There are so many books of tabs that are way more complicated than they need to be. Is the guy making the tab trying to show how complicated his playing is? A notable exception are R.C. Lunceford's tabs, which I use all the time.
I have Louey’s problem too. That’s why I’m not showing up on every thread. I’m focusing on basics and working to get a tune down. Then a second. I even get mixed up between two. But I’m listening as I type, your advice is perfect. One BIG question--where’s the Community, please? Thanks! Cindy
toadeepants yes Clifton has been shooting out videos left and right. It's great! Lots of great information from him and comments and questions from many people. Very helpful.
I had the same problem before. Dwight Diller would argue that you shouldn't try and learn more than 4 tunes a year. I think that may be a bit of an overstretch, but I now try and avoid tab as much as possible. If I can't whistle or hum a song before trying to play it, I'm trying to move too quickly. I go back to the basics.
I really appreciate your commentary on tablature.
