    I agree, an end-to-end Raspberry Pi with iPad Pro setup would be great including setting up Blink, setting up Mosh, and how to keep the connection active. You mentioned it before but brushed over the details.
    This was a great update, I would have missed the setup options otherwise.

    For folks who start with the standard variant and opt for XRDP as a remote desktop solution: you need to leave the video group to improve performance back up to previous levels.

    thank you very much to provide the patched OS. Out of curiosity I found that your setup just works fine also with my MacBook Air which has 2 USB-C ports. So I do not need to buy a Magic Keyboard and can use an external monitor via USB-C to Displayport and charge the MB at the same time while being connected to the RPI

    This is amazing - thank you.
    One question: how should the Pi get outside Internet? If we are outside our home, do we need to go into raspi-config and set up our WiFi connection wherever we are? Or should Internet come through USB-C?
    I was at an airport a few days ago and wasn’t able to pull down a public Git repo while SSH’ed into my Pi. Wasn’t sure if I messed up the configuration. Thanks!

    Hello ! I decided to put the same IOS on a raspberry, only on Rasberg Pi 3v +, I wrote the same thing on a memory card, inserted it, launched it, the boot process went perfectly. But, when the next loading page "Please enter new username " came out, I could not fill the line with anything, since the keyboard does not work. Tried different keyboards (wired, wireless) for some reason do not work. What is the problem ?

    Thx Rob, another great video. Especially useful to point beginners to 👍
    One question: I‘m tinkering w/ the idea to have a full disk encrypted raspberry pi os. So far the simplest approach of achieving this seems to be using BerryBoot.
    Do have considered using full disk encryption? I‘m especially worried when using my Pi w/ my iPad on the go, e.g. loosing the Pi or the SD card… 🤔
    BTW I‘m currently thinking about how to best solve providing the encryption password on pi boot…

    Great update to the video. I know in the previous edition you linked to a page that helped you setup usb-c for use with the pro by hand instead of using the pre-updated images. Any reason you dropped that this time around (e.g. too many questions, out of date instructions, etc.) or just didn’t want to?

    I think I'm missing something.. Is this so that you can use the iPad's screen for your raspberry Pi? If so, is that accomplished by simply plugging in the USB-C cable after configuring it?
    Or, is this so that your iPad can communicate with your raspberry Pi? (share data, etc)

    • @tech_craft
      @tech_craft  Рік тому

      This is so that the two devices can communicate. One of the things we can do then is share a remote desktop from the Pi to the iPad.

    Thank you for your amazing videos. This is inspiring as a fellow developer. I've been wanting to switch to my iPad 100% of the time, but can just never get my workflow to go smoothly. I do have a Pi 4 so am ready to try make this work this way.
    I do have a question though, what do you recommend for powering both the Pi and the iPad at the same time? I realize the iPad can power the Pi for a while, but if one works hours and hours each day, the battery is going to run out. Do you have a solution for this? Perhaps with your magic keyboard you power your iPad that way? I unfortunately do not have one of those. Just a regular Magic Keyboard and Logitech Mouse.

    • @tech_craft
      @tech_craft  2 роки тому

      I'm glad you found this useful.
      These days I am using the iPad Magic Keyboard with the extra power port, which makes the setup quite painless.
      Before I took the plunge on the Magic, I was using a USB-C hub with an extra USB-C port. The hub took in power, was plugged into the iPad and then the Pi was plugged into the hub. Sadly, the quality of USB-C ports on hubs is very variable, so I think I'd opt for a WiFi connection if I didn't have the Magic Keyboard.
      I'm going to shoot an updated guide for connecting the Pi over WiFi instead of USB-C very soon.

    Hi. I was only able to get hold of a Pi 400, with the Pi inside a keyboard. I am pretty sure it is a Pi 4, as it is powered by a USB-C cable. However the output is mini-HDMI. If I power the device from my iPad Pro, does the output go via the power socket into the iPad or do I also need a mini-HDMI to USB-C cable instead of the mini-HDMI to HDMI cable that came in the kit?

    • @tech_craft
      @tech_craft  2 роки тому +2

      You can connect the Pi 400 to the iPad over USB-C the same way as the Pi 4. I've tested this setup myself and it works really well. To avoid any confusion though - it's not the video signal that goes over USB-C, it's a network connection that you can use for remote terminal or screen sharing with something like VNC.

    • @tech_craft
      @tech_craft  2 роки тому

      OTG on the Zero works with pretty much any micro USB-A cable - you don't need an adapter, just the setup. It is a different setup (I think), some instructions here: gist.github.com/gbaman/50b6cca61dd1c3f88f41
      For the Pi2, I'm not really sure what the setup is and sadly I don't have one to test.
      For the Pi4, if you're board is revision 1.2+ any USB-C cable will do. Older board revisions need one of the cables linked in the description.

    There is one security related topic I do not really understand, if you use the USB-C connection between iPad and Raspi for IP4-network trafic: How do you connect this "combo" into the internet? How is the traffic routed and which one of the 2 computers is exposed to the internet - being a potenital attack target?
    After clarifying this an additional question is : How is this exposed computer protected and which services are visible from the internet?
    Background: I want to use your nice setup for a mobile working solution while travelling and while connecting the exposed part of your setup to potentially insecure networks.

    • @tech_craft
      @tech_craft  2 роки тому +1

      With the USB-C connection neither device gets Internet from the other. Both need to be connected to the Internet over wifi. You can connect the Pi to the iPad's hotspot if you have a cellular iPad.
      Depending on what OS you run on the Pi you'll have very few services open on the public internet. Probably only SSH and if you disable password authentication and disable the ability for root to login over SSH that shouldn't be a major issue.
      It is possible use a USB tethering approach which kind of inverts the relationship between the devices. In this setup, the pi will get internet connectivity through the iPad but only if you have a cellular device.

    To connect an older non usb iPad to the pi over wifi, do you still need to flash with etcher and then add the ssh file?

    • @tech_craft
      @tech_craft  2 роки тому +1

      You can certainly do it that way, but it's almost certainly better to use the Pi Imager because of the need to configure the default user/password.

    Hi! Thanks for the video, you always create a great atmosphere to listen and learn stuff!) Got a question: Currently using a MB Pro M1, and use RPi 3B+ as time Capsule server in my home network but I often need to interact with NTFS external hard drives. Is there a way to manage NTFS (wright and delete on it) from MB through RPi since it has now NTFS support package? Thanks in advance!

    • @tech_craft
      @tech_craft  2 роки тому +1

      I think you have two very solid options for this. Assuming you have the NTFS drive mounted on the Pi you can:
      1. Create an SMB share for it. SMB works really well from the Files app and this should be pretty seamless
      2. Use an app like Blink or Shellfish to share the mount over SSH. This is my preferred approach because it requires less fiddling on the Pi but does require you to have the SSH app.
      I'm going to show the SSH file sharing in my next video.

    I really enjoy your videos - thanks a lot! I have set up a raspberry pi 4 with your 64bit image and access the pi using Jumpdesktop and ssh. The only issue I have is with the keyboard. I have an apple folio keyboard (spanish version) and regardless of the keyboard settings I have tried out on the Pi, I cannot make the button work when I am logged into the Pi. Have you faced similar issues? I was hoping that you may have a solution to this issue! (otherwise the key works without problems). I have also tried to remap the key - this also didnt work. Any input on this is of course greatly appreciated!

    Thank you for your well presented video. What advantages are there in using the iPad connected to the Raspberry Pi, apart from providing a convenient terminal? For example, are there any developments to allow apps on the iPad to communicate with the Raspberry Pi OS? I’m new to this iPad connection, so sorry if it’s a silly question. 🤷‍♂️

    • @tech_craft
      @tech_craft  2 роки тому +2

      Not a silly a question at all. I have a video showing how the Pi can be used as a host for Visual Studio Code: ua-cam.com/video/11YfaGi0Fpk/v-deo.html.
      Apps on the iPad can communicate with the the Pi directly without any special permissions. For example, if you have a Pi running NextCloud, then the NextCloud app on the iPad can access that directly.

      @@tech_craft Thank you for your reply to my question. I have an older iPad Pro so I have no USB port. However I have been thinking of upgrading to the current iPad Pro, so this is another reason for me to upgrade. It would be nice to talk to the older iPad using wi-fi, but I expect that would open a can of worms! Did I understood it right that the iPad Ethernet USB C sharing won't share internet into the Pi ? Only a local assigned IP for SSH/VNC? So you still have to use the Pi's WiFi to get internet then? Many thanks for putting up this series of videos and images.

    Has anyone tried getting the iPad / Pi setup with the Pi inside an Argon One m.2 case?
    I can't seem to get the iPad to recognise the Pi when it is in the case.
    It gets power and boots up fine but the iPad never gets an IP address so I can't ssh to it. I've tried booting from a SD card and a SSD drive and the behaviour is the same. As soon as I whip it out of the case everything works fine.
    Tried ubuntu and Raspios - so I'm guessing the usb-c interface on the case is causing the issue.

      I wonder if the OTG support that’s needed gets dropped when using the Argon. I need to get one ordered and do some more testing.
