This lady was something special for all of us who are from the former Yugoslavia. When I read this sad news of her death, it was as like a part of my youth had disappeared. Rest in peace revered Mira. My sincere condolences to her family.
I met her, a few years ago. She is so sweet and feminine and beautiful, and somehow has this ringing air of a little girl at age 62. I decided I would meet her again..but alas. Bless your heart, dear. I was crossing a room and I looked over at her and she said, "beautiful" in her thick accent. I walked over and took her hand and smiled. Her hand was soft and cool. It was easy to smile with her, because she was smiling up at me like I was Santa Claus. Strange way to describe it, but it really felt like a little girl smile, and it was so beautiful and stirring to see. I have thought about her since then, still moved by that smile. She is a singer (and actress of course) that eventually fled Croatia during their war for independence after her receiving threats for being non-partisan, non-political, non-nationist, and acting in theatres on both sides. She is a contralto, a rare voice type, which helped her in dramatic roles, and yet, again, when she spoke to me in this chesty warm female voice she still sounded like like a happy little girl. I am upset. I really wanted to see you again, sing to you, Mira. As I get more grey in my beard and on my body, I am reminded by that smile to -be- young. Bless you dear, thank you for that smile. Thank you for letting me hold your hand.
non-partisan? do you know who partisans were? You probably mistaken them with opposite - nationalism. She was non-nationalist, she was croatian married to serbian director from croatia, during the yugoslav war, she just couldn't handle all the hate she was exposed to by croatian media, nationalists etc. Even in serbia she probably wasn't accapted as croatian...her being simply could not reconcile with what was happening in both serbia and croatia at the time. All that affected her a lot, so they moved to usa..she did various jobs there, even as a waitress, before she started acting career in usa, although she was one of the most recognized actresses in former Yugoslavia, and one of the best of her generation.. The irony is that after all these years and her death, she is recognized as the diva of Yugoslav film, both in croatia and serbia. And as one of the many directors she worked with, Rajko Grlić, said: "She had a great career and a life that, in addition to all that, did not caress her. She was, and will remain so forever: a real heroine."
@@shonebx I realized that, but still doesn't make sense, partisan mean member of any irregular military force, but these were forces/army loyal to the government. Anyway, I wouldn't connect her with anything related to the war...she was certainly just an artists. She never judged people by their origin, nationality, race...To classify her as a sympathizer of any army or militant group is simply absurd. :-)
You are right about her child-like smile and persona.Growing up in Yugoslavia, I rememered her as one of the best actresses and in the same time courage person.Sadness that she is gone but she will finally find the peace, which her very name means...Mira=Peace.

Mira Furlan is truly a Sci-Fi Icon! She looks absolutely fabulous! Delenn will always be one of my many favorite Babylon 5 characters! Awesome interview!
This breaks my heart all over again. How I wish I could meet her at a convention 15 years from now and tell her how much I loved her work, how much joy she brought me.
Showed me again how short life is. Use everyday as if it was your last and be kind to others this makes you give thanks, and you are happy in the things you do and say because they are from the heart. I seen that in her.
This is hard to watch so soon after her passing. She was such an amazing artist and it's serendipity that her homeland going through turmoil allowed us to enjoy her talents in the U.S.

R.I.P. Mira. Mira Furlan was born in Zagreb, Croatia (former Yugoslavia). During the war of the 90s 20. century, our newly composed patriots - peasants robbed her apartment in Zagreb and fired her at the National Theater. All the media wrote about her in a very bad light - some even wrote feuilletons in 3 sequels. The saddest thing is that among the team that attacked her was the so-called " Professor of Sociology at the Faculty of Medicine " - a rather arrogant and uneducated phenomenon. No less ugly is the fact that the author of that ugly gossip about her in 3 sequels got time on national TV to talk about her death. Degutant and uncivilized - this was not the case even in the blackest communism. She's really been through hell in her life. Once more " Laka ti zemlja, Miro". This is my favorite role of her ( in the Zagreb dialect) - movie "In jaws of life": ua-cam.com/video/Ve6AIeFPKKs/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/cZ7kzbDRuuQ/v-deo.html She teaches an inexperienced girl how to find a man: "It's seen on your nose that you falls in love instantly as soon as someone on the street asks you what time it is".
This is the first time I have heard her speak apart from playing Ambassador Delenn on Babylon 5 and I find it interesting that she speaks the same way as she did on the show, that somehow she created a special accent for the show, even though the other Minbari didn't speak that way.
