This song was their last true big hit. This was also forced upon them by Darcus Beese who was the head of A&R at Island records at that time, he had in fact tried to get them to record it for the Overloaded album, the girls apparently refused (and by girls I mean Keisha probably), but having already started an album that he rejected and told them to start again, and then Keisha took the helm for what became Catfights, he agreed to put the album out on one condition, they recorded girls for the lead single, this was because he felt the album lacked a lead single and this songs original version had been heavily used in a Boots advert for over 3 years at that point, so was seen as an easy hit for them, which they desperately needed after the failure of Change and Denial (as well as lower album sales for Change).
They agreed to record a version of it, however Keisha added a new bridge and some other lyrics were also re written to fit the group.
The video was a rush job, and was meant to be a reintroduction in the same vein as Freak Like Me (see the similarities in both videos).
Despite this doing really well on the charts, it's seen as their last proper hit, though they had 3 more top 10s after this, they didn't have staying power on the charts.
Live this song (as with many from this line up) was always a bit of a mess, Heidi screeching the high notes and Amelle shouting off key throughout the chorus, their volume control was always so off. Poor Keisha is all I can say.
Oh and after the Sugababes version came out, Darcus Did a deal with Boots and their version replaced the original song on the boots advert.
Keisha's solo verse is the best for me; she is phenomenal vocally here. This song is one of their best, great cover.
Keisha is life ❤️
The gem of this album is absolutely Unbreakable Heart ❤
Can’t wait to react to it!
Welcome back!!
You know we are gonna need you to dive into Chemistry or Tangled Up album tracks from GA next 👀
Thank you!!! It's a coming! Stay tuned! ❤️
This was used for an advert here in the uk for Boots the chemist lol
We luv an ad coin lol
Love the album for this,,,bangers on there
This is one of theirs that gets me hype so I play it whenever I'm getting ready for something or somewhere. I love it down, but the album version, not the video or single edit. The song is built around an interpolation of "Here Comes the Girls" (1970) by Ernie K-Doe so it especially appeals to my affinity for 70s funk and soul sounds. You should check it out.
Oh wow! Thank you will definitely listen to that! Rode out to it this morning. Y’all better be lucky I don’t have no hair 😂😂
Number 1 on the UK R&B charts!
The black girls knew what time it was! 😂🔥🔥🔥
So glad we are getting fed consistently!
Start working out, cause that back going to get bigger once I keep putting this food on the table 😂❤️❤️❤️
This era deserved more than it got, honestly.
Facts are facts!
This peaked at #3 in the UK, their first lead single since Overload not to go to #1.
The Sugababes had initially said they were gonna take a year break after the Change Era but then rushed back with Girls and then released Catfights and Spotlights which limped in at #8. Promotion for this album wasn't very good and Girls felt like a sellout due to all the adverts it featured in.
They were more motown inspired with this album and some of it is actually quite good, but i think people were starting to tire of the girls at this stage. The video is also bloody awful!
Video was pure 🚮 and cheap! Reading the comments how Change era was such a failure, I understand the label and the group needed to make up that budget deficiency by advertisement revenue so that makes sense why "Girls" was everywhere.
This song was a crime against humanity. They should have been taken to court for war crimes for releasing this.
Day 1 here, altho I use to use a different account, so glad to see your back, we missed you. I'm sure I was one of many who warned you the quality will rapidly decline when amelle joined lol I think less producers were willing to work with them due to the publics response of feeling like it wasn't really the Suagababes without mutya
Forever appreciate you! ❤️ Feels so good to be back! I’m not even upset with the studio production, it’s these live performances where I’m like I know you ***** lying 😂😭😭
Girls got a re-work that didn't make any version of the album. It could be streamed from their website, believe. ua-cam.com/video/cFk6onqesH4/v-deo.html
It made the physical formats of the album; I have it on mine.
@@DegrassiInstantStar The Klas Ahlund re-work that I posted? Or the version Werdna plays in this video?
Jem!!! You been hiding from me too 😘. Thank you as always for providing me context and additional songs
It nearly got to number 1, a number 2. I felt this track for them was throwaway. That hook would’ve worked with any girlband. There was nothing in that song that showcased what differentiates them from others. That’s the way I feel about that line up. It was pretty and pop. But essentially it gave Girls Aloud, pretty girls, pretty fun pop.
Girls Aloud would've never gone near this song. It's a Sugababes-esque song.
@@DegrassiInstantStar totally disagree obviously. But we’re all entitled to an opinion.
I do agree that GA most likely would’ve not chosen this song if offered first but I do agree that it’s not Sugababes at all and another girl group would’ve taken this and scored an easy hit and the girls needed something quick to maintain the legacy so I’m not mad at it. Bop! 😂
I never liked this song, still don't -- too repetitive. I love this album, didn't click on 1st listen, but when it did I absolutely loved it. I don't think there's too much single material on there tho, "Can We Call a Truce" probably could've been a single.
It’s a bop for me! 😂😝
I generally like everything about it, except for the chorus.
No mutya???
Didnt like this album, but i love no can do. And call a truce is actually growing on me.
So far it’s a bop from the 3 tracks I heard but we shall see how I feel down the road with the rest of the album.
@@Werdnasings looking forward. glad you're back!
The song became popular but only bcoz it was used in a popular ad for a huge supermarket .. I do have to say altho the sugababes are arguably more talented than girls aloud.
Girls aloud ARE those girls, personally I prefer a handful of the sugababes songs over girls aloud but girls aloud had Sooo many pop hits and songs like biology really did change and innovate pop music, plus sugababes didn't really have any personality n looked miserable half the time, girls alouds were always fun and bubbly, the docuseries's they'd do were very popular, they just had the IT factor
Cheryl alone, eats up every Sugababe member but there’s that however Keisha sings all 9 girls under the table 😂. I’m not mad that them girls and the label had to do what they had to do to make up that budget loss with “Change”
Ha, you actually reacted to the terrible performance of this with Jade.
But I always found this song really annoying 😂
Forgot all about that travesty 😂.
Them cheap keyboard horns is what make it annoying 😂
I dislike this song. Amelle did indeed eat especially, all of them were great, but I do not like this song.
Rode out to it this morning! Bop! 😂
