We saw a few fish heads, among which 2 were sharks. This is the Pacific ocean so you have to expect that there will be some kind of predator swimming around, especially if their prey swims in the area. If the lifeguards tell you otherwise, it's probably wrong. lol

Don't believe the lifeguards/employees at hotels when they say there are no sharks. Most "salt waters" have some form of predator in the area, be it sharks, barracudas or other. You are correct. The second largest inhabited dormant volcano crater in the world is only some 25 km from that very beach. Doing good, thanks - Likewise, I hope. We were in Panama for a while but now we are back. :-)
Great question! In the immediate area of Rio Hato, as far as I know, there isn't so much to see (keep in mind that we were there just as the tourism industry was beginning to reopen from the Covid lockdowns). Should you decide to rent a vehicle, I highly recommend visiting El Valle de Anton (about 1 hour drive), especially if you are into hiking. Check out one of our favorite hikes in El Valle here: ua-cam.com/video/JETrCOn6HE8/v-deo.html There was a tour to "Monkey Island"/Panama Canal and another one to Panama City that looked quite interesting but we did not go since we had a car to explore the immediate area. Around 25 sharks! It doesn't sound like that was "sports fishing". When will we humans ever learn that we have to limit and balance what we harvest from "nature". We are (unfortunately) "unbeatable" at messing up ecosystems and destroying everything...

Absolutely. I have never seen so much on a beach before. Some locals "sell" horse rides right at the beach. We saw as many as 8 horses at the same time. They stick around in front of the hotel's beach from early morning till the end of the afternoon. Poor horses...in all that heat

In the immediate area of Rio Hato, as far as I know, there isn't so much to see (keep in mind that we were there just as the tourism industry was beginning to reopen from the Covid lockdowns). It must have been a sad sight to see. If they left the beach quickly, there is a high probability that it was not legal fishing.
