I have an Italian version signed by Mr Volpi, there was some things in the book that were really hard to take and others that were pretty well spot on, but having met him and spoken with him and listened to people who appeared with him and audiences that heard him, he also is a contradiction, he opines that certain singers changed their voices, but he does not talk about himself, he changed his voice in the Thirties in 1936 he had a very fast vibrato and I mean fast, by 1938 he had very much the voice like he had in later years say mid Forties to early fifties, he was the most difficult and opinionated Opera Singer that I have ever met, but, with Gigli and Martinelli them three were the successors to Caruso, for different reasons, but none of these as Martinelli famously said would make a little pinky on Caruso's hand, he was just in a different Universe to everybody, I like the way Lauri Volpi talks about singers not of his era but previous, they were all great that is for sure. the best Parallel for me was Martinelli and Delmonaco, both performed Opera with great realism and Stage presence, Del Monaco's Otello was very similar in style to Martinelli, who worked on the role for many years with Toscanini, and having watched many of the Greats after Tamagno.
I know that Lauri Volpi was greatly admired at Covent Garden, by the audience that is, but many colleagues avoided him like the plague, he could be rude and pompous, especially to stage hands and even the Chorus, he had a long and at times violent episode with Ezio Pinza, this was over a row at the MET where Lauri Volpi made a really fowl and despicable remark to Pinza's father, which ended with Pinza knocking him out. Gigli too avoided him as much as possible, later Masini also had a problem with him, really after WW2 he had to spend more time in Fascist Spain than Italy, he was still a great Tenor but some audiences could be rather cool towards him.
For all his drawbacks Politically and as a Human Being, you cannot fault the Man as a Great Tenor that he was and always will be, but as a Human being he was difficult. The book is a must read. It is full of opinions and gives a good insight I believe.

I have to say that there is Russian edition which is composition of 3 Volpi's editions. It has been published in 2011. Unfortunately it was only 1000 copies and without digital version🤦‍♂ But some people can read it in russian libraries free.

It sounds like there ought to be a new edition coming soon: the Italian version of the newer, improved English version (... of the old Italian version). 😉😋

Un buon tenore, di quell'epoca io preferisco Beniamino Gigli che è stato senza ombra di dubbio il tenore piu popolare conosciuto e probabilmente il piu pagato al mondo negli anni 20 30 40. my opinion

@@AfroPoli Just received it - alone the table of contents... a lot of people I never heard of & to check out. Homework assignment of before the 1st regular page already, now if that book doesn't teach something... If only I had remotely the clarity and punch of this guy voice... There in the beginning, I don't hear one little bit of air, 100.0% sound smashing the speakers! :) Well but my voice at least seems to come back from making hardly any sound after the infection, to something that could begin to pass for some of those bleak modern singers - better than nothing for hobby I guess! :D If you can stomach some atrociousness, this is from today: ua-cam.com/video/QJLGC15sqn4/v-deo.html

I liked your singing. Not only do you have a pleasant voice (very fitting for Siegmund or Max) but also a lot of musicality. The lines were great, it’s super hard to do that with Karaoke. My compliments. I’d pay to hear you sing.
