  • Great game from 90/91 regular season between young team on the rise (Sonics) and experienced Lakers squad with Magic Johnson.
    31-year-old Magic and 22-year-old ''Reing Man'' were two of the biggest stars at the Forum.
    Magic Johnson: 33 points, 9 assists, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, 12/14 FG.
    Shawn Kemp: 21 points, 8 rebounds, 10 block shots (franchise and career high at that time).
    Lakers won the game 105:96.

      If Magic played until 96 he'd have most likely won more than 6 titles and he'd have Jordan beat unless Jordan went harder for longer and teamed up with some superstars on top of Scottie.

    Magic was about 32 at worst. Payton was young. Besides, GP was too short to defend Magic in the post. Prime Jordan, DJ, and Dumars couldn't stop him that low either. He was 6'9" and had a legit post game with MUCH greater overall offensive skill than was usually recognized because of his passing. He would've been a 25 ppg player if he had been willing to cut down his assists (no reason to, but just sayin). He avg'd at 24 in 1987 even while also averaging 12.5 apg.

      The guy averaged 20 ppg and 11 assists per game. That's being responsible for 42 points a game. He could have averaged 25 ppg with his eyes closed if he wanted to.

    True, I noticed GP said that and Bron left Magic out of his top 3 (though Bron stuttered thru his list making it sound like he had to give an answer off the cuff). Prime GP on Earv would've been interesting to see due to the height thing. I think he would've done the Joe D bit of hounding him the full length of the court before he could get position. By Scott had weak handles so he was of little help in the backcourt. Utah had Bobby Hansen doing nothing but that against Magic in the 88 Semis.

      There's a reason Calabro (he also coined "The Glove" for GP) called him the "Reign Man," because of those thunderous dunks raining down on defenders heads. The problem with Kemp was, he didn't diversify his game as he got older, so that, as he lost his athleticism, he became less effective.

He was unstoppable even in Portland and Orlando in big games defending and beating prime Shaq and Kobe and all the greats over and over with complete scrubs as teammates just like his years in Cleveland. The only person who gets it is Dirk who let Kemp speak last at his retirement among all the greats including Barkley, Pippen. and Bird they all set up Kemp to speak and know the truth he was the very best PF of all time.

    I agree w/ the MJ point. Derek Harper once said that he tells people Magic was every bit as good as MJ and people look at him like he's nuts. For the 1s who actually had to contest his height and his full bag of perimeter pivot moves AND jumpers, it makes sense they think that. Mike, great as he was, was more of a conventional matchup for Gary. It actually makes sense he'd think that. Sticking Magic was basically sticking a SF w/ a post game who just happened to have the mind and vision of a PG.

      Yep! Nate was a better defender than Gary, during this season, but Gary became the starter in his second year, 91-92... In fact, Gary's game wasn't developing as fast as the ownership had hoped, and if not for George Karl being hired during that 91-92 year, Payton might not have been challenged in the right way by another coach... • @edkiely2712
      @edkiely2712 Рік тому

      Put down the pipe Ray! Magic never looked average from '80-'92(Olympics)! He more than did his part in the '91 Finals, especially games #1 & #5 where he had triple-doubles! For the series, he averaged 18.6 pts 8.0 rebs 12.4 asts! Pippin, no question, played Magic well, and had some key defensive plays, but Phil only played Scottie on Magic in spurts because, Scottie was needed against Worthy and, Magic would've put Scottie in foul trouble!
      The Lakers lost that series because: 1- Worthy sustained a bad ankle-injury against Portland in Game #5 of the WCF's and it became worse as the series went on, to the point James sat out of game #5! 2- Scott played horrible! 3- The Lakers offense went stagnant when Magic got a rest 4- Bulls were to quick and athletic for L.A!
