  • Review of Kobalt’s 6 cubic ft. steel wheelbarrow with flat free tire. I’ve owned it for 3 years now, leaving it outside in the new England weather and am finally able to provide a quick and detailed review of how it handles. I also go over the answers to a number of intial questions I had when purchasing the wheel barrow from lowes.

I bought one today for 30$. It's a great wheelbarrow. There is nothing else selling like it, at the price. It has metal handles, a non inflatable wheel, and is built solid.

Bought the model with 2 front wheels today. After watching your review I feel a bit better since I didn’t have enough time to research much. It’s going to be put to work tomorrow. Thanks for your review.

Do not store loaded down or the tire will get a flat spot on one side.

The only complaint I have with mine is after filling the wheelbarrow full of material the handles slide off and dump everything out of the wheelbarrow.

I recently rebuilt my thirty year old steel trayed wheelbarrow, so I have a report to make from that perspective:
1: Bolts. Bolts get rusty and seize up. You might postpone that by regularly greasing or oiling nthe bolts and then loosening and tightening them to keep them functioning.
The real answer would be for manufacturers to install stainless steel, or at least galvanized bolts on quality new wheelbarrows. But no one does, to my knowledge.
Of course, when I replaced the bolts on my rebuild, I didn't use stainless steel or galvanized bolts either!
    2. Steel vs plastic trays:
I see a lot of badly cracked trays on Craigslist that are a year or two old. Pretty easy to crack and break, and can be difficult to repair.
By contrast, it takes many years for a steel tray to get badly rusted, and even then the barrow can and should be disassembled and the wood and steel refinished ---good for additional decades. So I'm convinced steel is best.
    3. I was glad to see this review of the barrow after a few years of use. Wheelbarrows are VEHICLES that need to be inspected visually from time to time with appropriate maintenance and repair done to keep them function efficiently.
    4. Tires ---- I've had wheelbarrow tires go flat repeatedly, and that means you can't depend on having your tool available when you need it.
So now I favor flat free tires.

Another method would be to just give the bolts, cracks and bolt entry points a spray with automotive engine paint fresh after assembly. Seals the cracks that form during torquing and prevents the rusting from the get go.

      Yes....
I wonder how that would work long term?
A steel tray can probably long outlast a plstic tray, since I( see so many cracked plastic trays.
On the other hand, rusted out trays seem to be the leading cause of discarding wheelbarrows.
The ideal solution would probably be for manufacturers to use stainless steel bolts, but none do, to my knowledge. That and weather protection for the steel tray would add a lot to longevity, and allow the tray to be taken off and repainted when it starts to get rusty. Galvanized bolts would likely be a good option as well.
And spraying painting the bolts would likely be a lot better than plain steel bolts, as you suggest. I may try doing just that to the two wheelbarrows I have rebuilt in the past year.
And just repainting the tray when it begins to get rusty, without taking everything apart, would likely be very helpful.

@@SeattlePioneer I just did it as I happen to have both black and cobalt blue automotive lying around. Exact color match. Looks great. And yes i would think a spot sand and paint as things wear would be sufficient to keep it going for 20 years. Another weak point is the top rim where water can accumulate when flipped upside down. Filling with extra rtv silicone likely a good move there.

I’d really just like to know how big the box is since I would like to order it for pickup but want to make sure it’ll fit in my car 😅

I bought it built but the box is as long as the handles but the height is only just higher than the actual barrel
