Thoughts on Rode Streamer X and why I Returned It

- I wanted to love the new Streamer X from Rode... it's small, colorful, has a capture card... but it's just not working out for me, and there are some problems with the unit itself. Since I mentioned it in a video and on my community tab, I thought I should be honest about my experience and tell you I'm returning it!

Headphone hiss on this device is dependend on headphone impendance. High impendance (expensive ones) = no hissing
Thank you for sharing this review. I am glad that people are realizing that sometimes when you get a "jack of all trades" product, they are also very likely to be a master of none, especially in a first generation product. I will be sticking with my Cam Link and Zoom Podtrak P4 for the time being just to mitigate any risk of both audio and video failing rather than a safety net of 2 separate sources.

My biggest issue is the stuttery video with anything other than 30fps. In my mind “up to 4K30” should include 24fps, right? Right?! I really wanted to love it, but it’s been in the box now waiting to see if there will ever be a firmware update. Fortunately I haven’t had the hissing issue, but it’s definitely not what I hoped it would be.
Haven’t seen the Mackie before, that looks like it might be a great option!

You’re welcome! I am now using the mvx2u from Shure so it plugs in to my computer via USB and doesn’t take up any space. No buttons or anything, nothing fancy 😆
Rode sent me a new Streamer X to try out but I haven’t yet.
Hi Meredith, in my opinion, there's good and bad in your speech. Let me explain. As for the reasons why in your personal use, you do not find your account I can only agree with you since it is your opinion. Indeed, this product doesn't seem to be finished at all from a software point of view, especially if you're on a Mac (the Rode X software is still in beta on the Mac, by the way). For ZOOM, there's a Rode video on youtube which explains that you need to use virtual device. Have you tried it? As for your recommendation for the Mackie M caster, there's no video capture. So it's absolutely not the same product...
Great video. Hopefully they fix some of the issues in a software update. No power button blew my mind as well, seems like a default option on all devices.
I have the exact same problem with the Rodecaster Pro II. Sometimes audio drops or the same issue when the computer sleeps or restarts. I had the unit replaced twice with no resolve. Customer support said they did not have this issue or reported issues. Good to see someone else having same problem with a "similar" device. I had the Rodecaster Pro (original) and had no problems. I have a problem recommending their latest audio interfaces.

I've been talking with Diana Gladney about the issues that I've had with mines since launch. Monte Weaver also had issues on his as well. I WANT to love it so much, I've kept it, but when I added it to my workflow replacing my camlink and rodecaster pro, every day I sat at the desk I had issue upon issue upon issue. I was really disappointed. It has the potential to be so great, especially if you need an all in one device for your travels, this would be great. BUT its not great now. As far as the pads, I said the same exact thing in my walkthrough. Theres NO way id remember what was on each pad past the first two pages, and then how do you even know what page you're on? At least with the rodecaster pro devices there is a screen that lets you see what page you're on. I also have the issue of the setting changing and not staying where I last left it for my xlr mic. Hopefully in future firmware updates, this gets fixed and can live up to its full potential. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Thank you India! I’m glad I’m not alone. I wanted to love it too. I’m not totally convinced the issues I had can be fixed with firmware (that was my main question for their support team!). I didn’t want to hang on to it while I wait for firmware 😜
Thanks for the video I have been researching getting one. I saw another video with someone having issues as well but so far what i saw in common was MAC both times a MAC was involved have you tryied on a PC if you have one

@@meredithmarsh I wonder if that is a factor maybe a driver issue on mac I am still planning on getting one and will let you know my findings hopefully before you send it back. I will ask Caleb also from Dslrshooter if he had any issues on mac he 3d printed a nice case for it which also holds a monitor

I am completely in accordance with your experience, I have the same issues, it needs a major software upgrade
I use the Zoom ProTak P4 as my audio mixer. it has four audio inputs and it can record audio separately.
Great video. I was think of upgrading from my Vocaster Two, and Camlink 4K, which works very well, but I think I'll hold back now. Maybe I'll keep the Camlink 4K and look at the Rode Duo, keeping audio and video seperate.
I have the Streamer X and I do enjoy it, Røde pushed out a firmware update that will fix the unit from not working when your computer has gone to sleep. With your question about how I remember what is on the smart pads, on Windows I use Røde’s Unify, which is a software channel mixer that Interfaces with the Streamer X and allows me to assign sound effects, voice effects to the unit and displays what is on what smart pad. Unify is in Beta for Mac.
Finally a good honest review of this product, and a lot of what you've been saying is what a lot of paid reviewers have skimmed past really quickly. Hopefully you enjoy the Mackie, I've never heard of that specific one before but it looks interesting!
As for remembering the sound effects, I had a similar problem with a different device and the only reason why I remembered which ones were which is by pressing the wrong one 3 times before I hit the right one

I use the Rodecaster Pro and it is amazing
I have the same problem, noise at headphones and disconnections every time after sleep mode or restarting , I’m using Mac m1
Very informative! I have a RCP2 and it also disconnects when I restart my computer. Hopefully the Mackie works out better for you.

I have the very first Roadcaster pro and it works like a dream. It sounds like the issues you mention can be solved via firmware in the future.

@@meredithmarsh I have had delays from Rode before. But early adopters tend to face issues. The main problems sound like they are caused by the lack of a power button (!!!!!) that should have never been omitted. The device is not cheap! My ElGato CamLink4k works like a dream and keep things simple, although that device is due for a usb-c update. Enjoyed your video.
I have had the problem with audio interfaces not recognizing software as well. I purchased a Lewitt Connect 6 (liked the device) but the reason that I returned it was because I could not quickly and reliably get it to recognize the software when I turned it on to start my day. Maybe they fixed that by now but I didn't want to take a chance dealing with that forever. Then I tried the Focusrite Vocaster Two. I am still not happy with the how the software controls don't appear until I quit the software and turn the device on at the same time. It is a hassle but at least it works reliably in that way. So I can certainly understand your frustration with the Streamer X.
If the device doesn't work the way you expect it to OR if it doesn't work consistently, it's broken. 64 things that those buttons can do with no signage? Bwahahahahaha, I can see no way in which THAT could go wrong. However, having used Mackie analog boards, I'm super excited to hear your thoughts about the M-Caster studio.
Hi Meredith! You make some very valid points, thanks for getting this out there. I use the Streamer X daily for work and - while I will certainly keep it, I can feel your pain. There are quite a few inconsistencies and bugs quite obvious in this version of the firmware. One weird thing I face: I can't hear my system sounds on 2 out of 3 PCs when the unit is set to VideoCall mode. It should send system sound to my headphones and does so on one PC but on my work PC and my Mac it does not. On these two machines I need to slide up the "streamer" slider to get sound in my headphones. Why? Nobody knows. Support had me reset the device, change multiple USB-C cables and ports (which indeed made my camera work) and so on. I am confident Rode will sort this out over the next couple of months - they very often have done that and even released new features for year old devices with new firmware versions. So I remain hopeful.....and will let my return window pass.... Time will tell if that trust in the brand was the right choice.

I’ve owned the Rodecaster for 3 years now and it’s brilliant . I just bought the streamer X and I’m concerned . RODE REALLY NEEDS TO DO SOME SOFTWARE UPDATES ! Ie. long press bottom right button to turn it off .. etc
Well i wanted to love it but i could not update my Streamer x, even the factory reset did fail.
Every time i started rode central it want me to update the streamer so i cant configure it. In unify it promts update too.
his thing cost 400€ and it does not work out of the box brand new.

I purchased a Streamer X online from Sweetwater a few days ago, I received the shipment before Thanksgiving, and the shipment was fast. But looks like I was sent a defective item, I am in the process of returning it or getting a replacement. Out of the box it is not working, I have an M1 Mac Mini and when I use it with Rode Central or Unify, I receive a synchronization error. It also asks me to update the firmware and when I attempt to update Streamer X firmware it keeps giving me an error it says, "Could Not Update" and a yellow "RETRY" button appears. I have attempted this several times still no progress, I even attempted to do a factory reset and it would not. I connected everything directly to my M1 Mac Mini using the brick and the cable from Rode. At this point I do not know what else to troubleshoot, it shouldn't be like this. Did anyone have similar issues that they were able to get it to resolve?
Obviously too late, but Rode just released. firmware that address all of these issues, I had the same problem and it addressed mine. Great video.

Power button def missing....noise...I dont get that...I get audio levels from OBS meters, Im using a Mac M1 and had no issues with the unit connecting generally, mine defaults to the mic input on every startup

Re: Pads
I use one or two pages for one specific project or use case. I hardly use them anyways so it's more than enough. No way I could remember where what is using more than that in a live environment.
im geting to love this gadget using with zoom conf, have to open first rodecentral and choose your xrode then close it ,open rode unify then you can use it without hazzle . video is very nice , small you can travel with it and use in small normal table .
Just a helpful tip for the monitoring part. Rode wants you to download their Rode Unify software. There you can monitor your audio levels through there. You can also have separate channels for your music browser, etc. I can't comment on the other issues because I don't have one. You can also see what your smart pads are labelled through there. I'm sure they have some type of communications about this, but, that clears up the monitoring and knowing what your smart pads are labelled. You can also program them through the software.

@@meredithmarsh anytime. They are a little confusing because they have three softwares right now. I think you can change and see your smart pads on rode central. I'm only a rodecaster pro 2 user, do our experience is different.
I would never be able to remember what I programmed into 4 unlabeled buttons.

I have had exactly the same problems with the GoXLR occasionally not passing through any audio at all. It's infuriating. This was long before the announcement that the owning company were pulling out of the game.
Great vid Meredith. I have the exact problems too. I am past my return eligible date so I am hoping Rode fixes these issues with a firmware update. I suspect all issues are fixable except for the visual indicators you mention and the hiss in the headphone out.
Oh no! I’m hoping you’re right about the firmware for other customers’ sakes. I wonder if rose will exchange yours for you if it is indeed faulty.
Rode mixers aren’t an upgrade, you could’ve just sorted the audio with your mic by going into a seperate card on the back of your computer. Audio is the most basic of technologies and UA-camrs are sending people down the wrong road with all this gear. A focusrite scarlet is an upgrade for xlr mics and far cheaper and you can hide it under your desk.
I get so aggravated when a piece of gear I bought is not the piece of gear that I thought it was. Thank goodness it doesn't happen very often!

Yup. Other reviewer like Curtis Judd has mentioned that the headphone output is very noisy. The only solution for him was to use high impedence headphone, which is usually expensive. As for buttons, yeah, I agree, and I'd rather use Stream Deck instead. I wouldn't be able to remember what color button does what. Only thing I really like is that it is very compact.
Programable buttons like Stream Deck would be a dream on the Steamer X and other rodecasters!
Rode just isn’t great gear, it looks fantastic but they always have issues especially when they release something new. Same for most companies that constantly release new gear. I backed some kickstarters like the OBSbot and maono caster but what a nightmare. Even the rode wireless go mics are too loud on the lowest setting. I sold all my rode gear and replaced with broadcasting mics. The one thing rode does well are the ntg mics for beginners. I’m not a fan of those coloured pads they look childish. The software will show what page ur on. I’d even put black tape or paint off that DJI logo so people aren’t staring at your mic. I think all the gear should look minimalist and work like expensive broadcast gear. To save money on your gear stop buying the next fad thing until it’s been around a few years.
Sounds like you got a bad unit. The hiss in the headphones is a common complaint and very troubling.
Do you use a rodecaster?
@@meredithmarsh for streaming? Not usually. For podcast production, yes. I have the original Rodecaster Pro, and it’s great!
I found the Streamer X to be an interesting idea, but since I already have hdmi capture, I don’t see a need.

Ok, you have the ability to set the colours of the pads to what you want, you can plan this. You can work to understand the product. If you're not an audio person, not a streamer, as your said.. Maybe three product isn't for you and you shouldn't be reviewing it? 8 have it, I've had technical issues with it, but I've spent time learning and able to comment about those. If you turn around and go "it just doesn't work the way I want" maybe you're not right for it
No disrespect but over 2 minutes into this video you keep rambling on and making excuses of why you are making the review and what you actually do. As a professional I’m giving you honest feedback to hopefully enlighten you and not insult you. I’m not going to continue watching this clip…sorry.
