Prim was only 14. She was not supposed to be on the front line of the war, she was too young. That's one of the reason Katniss believes Snow. Because she knows Coin had to approve her sister being sent to the war front.

At the start of the story, the only thing Katniss wanted was to save her sister. The only thing Peeta wanted was to not be changed.
At the end of the story, they both lost everything. But they managed to survive, together. I like that it doesn't end with the typical happyly ever after. There's no true winners in war. Everyone ends up damaged and it takes true work to recover from it all.
Last paragraph of the book, before the epilogue :
“Peeta and I grow back together. There are still moments when he clutches the back of a chair and hangs on until the flashbacks are over. I wake screaming from nightmares of mutts and lost children. But his arms are there to comfort me. And eventually his lips. On the night I feel that thing again, the hunger that overtook me on the beach, I know this would have happened anyway. That what I need to survive is not Gale's fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that. So after, when he whispers, "You love me. Real or not real?" I tell him, "Real.”
And end of the epilogue :
"My children, who don't know they play on a graveyard.
Peeta says it will be okay. We have each other. And the book. We can make them understand in a way that will make them braver. But one day I'll have to explain about my nightmares. Why they came. Why they won't ever really go away.
I'll tell them how I survive it. I'll tell them that on bad mornings, it feels impossible to take pleasure in anything because I'm afraid it could be taken away. That's when I make a list in my head of every act of goodness I've seen someone do. It's like a game. Repetitive. Even a little tedious after more than twenty years.
But there are much worse games to play."

Thank you. I was hoping you would show the Ramblers this quote from the book. Suzanne Collins' father was career military and she has done a wonderful job of describing all the emotions and results of conflict like that. I have never seen an author do it better who was not personally involved.

@@RamblersInc The movie resolves it for you. Children that she said she would never have under the old regime and an up swelling musical background.
The book is more true to life, more real and designed to make you think which is why it is taught in schools. Peeta holding onto the back of a chair when he gets a flashback. Haymitch saying there are no winners there are survivors. Coin willing to come in behind Snow and do exactly the same things he did like North Korea and its successive leaders. Plutarch continuing to be the puppet master.
Political allegory not meant to be resolved and forgotten that makes people uncomfortable enough to keep trying to get it banned under any pretext - According to the American Library Association, The Hunger Games has been banned or challenged since its publication "due to insensitivity, offensive language, violence, anti-family, anti-ethic, and occult/satanic and the 2014 addition of "inserted religious views."?!

I really wish we had gotten the scenes with Plutarch after Katniss kills Coin. In the books, he is with Haymitch when Katniss is released from jail. But, unfortunately, Philip Seymour Hoffman passed away in the middle of shooting this movie (that is why Haymitch just reads a letter from him). I believe the director has said the shots of him at the execution are CGIed in from other scenes. I would've liked to have seen how he played that "If I had to put you through this again, I would." Addiction is a terrible disease! RIP to a legend.

Slight clarification. Peeta and Haymitch both knew what Katniss was upto the minute she voted yes. They know what the games mean forher and how much she loved Prim (and Rue) and would never, ever want another hunger games. That's why Haymitch looks over and stares at her. People think he's disgusted by her but in reality he's thinking what are you upto girl or rather "So now you know who the real enemy is". Later he says to her, "you don't disappoint". It's also why Peeta was ready to grab the pill out of her hand. You can even see him in the vote scene at the end when the camera lingers on him.

First, Katniss' mental breakdown is far worse/more comprehensive in the books. After she was shot in District 2, she had to go through basic soldier training to prove to Coin that she was mentally/physically fit enough to go to the capital.
The biggest overlooked factor in Katniss' breakdown is her age. She's a CHILD! She's a child taking on the pressure, responsibility and guilt that could easily destroy a well-adjusted adult.
Unlike many reactors, you guys cut her a fair amount of slack.

There is so much symbolism in these books I really recommend reading them and actually listening to what they are saying. As far as Coin being worse then snow, ultimately her role is said in her name. Her name is Coin, as in "two sides of the same coin" (referring to the saying that even if they look different, both sides of a coin are apart of the same coin when it comes down to it). Through out the novel she, Coin, is shown to be wrestling with using Katniss as a propaganda piece but also being afraid that Katniss would be too popular and would take power away from her. It was her version of poisoning her opponents like Snow did on his rise to power.

    • @RamblersInc
      @RamblersInc  4 місяці тому +3

Oh that's a great way to look at her name. She never wanted her to be the face of the propaganda and maybe there was a moment where she thought she could control Katniss. Well.....that didn't work.

Peeta was watching Katniss the whole time the execution was happening so saw her pick out the nightlock and was able to stop her in time. I believe in the books, it was so close to taking the pill that when Peeta stopped her, she bit his hand. These two need each other and make each other better.

Apparently the author, Suzanne Collins, originally wrote the books as educational material, of sorts, for students--high school students I think. To give them a sense of politics and war, and the kinds of lessons that can be drawn from history. Like how violence tends to devolve into an endless cycle that is Very difficult to emerge from.
Great reactions and commentary, guys, especially on some of the "full circle" stuff: It turns out that Katniss can't actually save her sister. It's clear from the first one (in the books at least, and for us readers not for katniss xD) I mean even Gale said it. She only kisses him when he's in pain. When she feels guilty for him. And he uses it, because he says "i know you would do that" right before. So I never blamed Katniss for kissing him, and making him unsure. Because... From the author's point of view, the 'love story' is supposed to represent Katniss's moral choice rather than actual love interests. Gale represents vengeance/rage whilst Peeta represents hope and the promise that life can go on. At the end Katniss doesn't need anymore fire but hope and the promise that life can go on. It’s not explained in the books, but I wonder what they do for food. They each have all the money they could ever want for being Victors, but that had to have stopped. I enjoyed your coverage of the Hunger Games. I subscribed to the channel. No Harry Potter yet?

I've seen the first 2 aaaages ago (before we had a channel), so just undecided on whether we should start again and react from scratch or carry on from the third one.

@RamblersInc Start from scratch. It doesn't matter that you've seen a couple. You may have forgotten some things or notice something new.

Oh so sad when you said that Philip Seymour Hoffman was in this one. He before they filmed. Oh they did include a shot of him. That's nice. But he definitely wasn't actively involved in the making of this movie.

41:07 "She's no different to Snow." English Language Games!
Here in the USA, we would never say "She's no different *to* Snow."
We would say, "She's no different 'from' Snow." or "She's no different 'than' Snow."
This stuff fascinates me to no end. 😆

They are saying she is no different compared to snow, we all understood that.

On one hand, Gale is so much hotter than Peta. On the other hand, Gale blew up Katniss' sister.

To each their own. Josh Hutcherson aged like fine wine :D He's really handsome in Five Nights at Freddy's that came out last year. And his natural dark hair suits him better.

lmaoo. I read the book before watching the movie and Snow cracked me up so bad.. like boy do you hear yourself? His thoughts are so psychotic but he keeps justifying his actions, and god, the way he is soo so kind and sweet to others on the outside and appears harmless and helpless, but his thoughts are just so awful, how he is disgusted by them. He is very smart, the way he manipulates everyone.

After watching your after thoughts i would recommend the prequel. It's all about Snow and the beginnings of the Hunger Games and how it came to be as we see it in The Hunger Games.
