@@visassess8607 Oh, well yeah, it came out originally on Switch a couple years back and then got ported to PC. I got it the day it came out and personally had a great time with it. It's ehh... Not really that great as a game on its own (the performance issues were ASTRONOMICAL when it came out), but as a sequel to *Deadly Premonition* it's *perfect*
The writing in this game is actually genius, York talking about B movies while driving, him casually bringing up gruesome details about past cases, it's absolutely hilarious
bizarrely, despite this game being bad I found its story very good, if it weren't for the flaws and the silly things I would say that compared to heavy rain it is more interesting and has plot twists a little better worked and less imprevisives.
There is nothing better than a long, analytical video about some janky and obscure horror game made in the late 2000´s or early 2010´s. Great video, keep up the good work!

The team that made the game was Konami b-team, so they didn't have the funds to travel to America for reference material, so they used amaerican movies as all of their reference material. Many years ago a drunk driver thought he was driving in the middle of the road and leaned right to correct it, he was wrong and he hit a speed limit sign in front of my house, which then bent and his car went up in the air and landed on the side. Gas coming out, people running to help, they open the car door facing up and he comes crawling out with a cigarette still in his mouth. A pure comedy moment.

I love that it was York and Emily who actually bonded and so it was them who go to be together Zach on the other hand was just a passerby throughout their entire relationship its a really clever way to kill off a main character or two and not have it be too sad
I feel like to prepare for deadly premonition, you need to watch twin peaks season one and two, dubbed in chinese, translated into vietnamese from chinese and then back into english.
It's not "so bad it's good" in the same way a b movie can be. I assume this is where you drew your example from, maybe I am wrong. A videogame is a different medium and a generally different experience. There are generally great things about this game. The dialogue, the music, the concepts, the story, the character development, etc. Even if these things all fail in execution in some spots, the game generally is a great game. Is an entertaining experience as far as "can I define this by arbitrary metrics we know that can make this medium bad or good?" No. There are objectively terrible things as well. Liking it or not of course is subjective. But b movies tend to fail at everything and are often a product of creators delusional aspirations and egos. The narcissism engrained in a person to go "yeah, this is good. No matter what I made, it's great, because I'm Neil breen." (For example.)
I. Love. This. Game. Huge fan of Twin Peaks, and this game has extra special place reserved for me. I used to play this with my best friend few times a year, to 100% completion. We owned this in every possible platform. He died in 2014, I still play this game every year, very happily, with a heavy heart. We were huge horror fans, and this had extra special place, due to the quirckiness. I installed this on my pc around 2012, I still have that untouched version and hard drive in my computer, and I play that once a year, at the start of summer when he passed away... Rest in peace friend.
I really love the blend of humor and horror. I think it’s actually an extremely novel blend; horror movies start to wear down and lose their fear factor when it’s constantly trying to be scary/dreadful, as people just start to get tired of it.
This game had me dying of laughter in that scene where the police officers and York were eating at a restaurant and York starts describing the most horrific cases he worked on, this game really is a masterpiece! A game with soul.
I mean, York isn't wrong. The whole 'murdering and the skull-collecting' thing was deeply disturbing and perverted. But drinking out of something that you've pissed into is just *weird*. Just... ew. Is it really that hard to keep your drinking and pissing skulls separate?

This type of writing in games is what I miss about 2000's Japanese games. They take themselves seriously, but have moments of absurdity and wackiness sprinkled throughout.
It’s actually so surprising and yet refreshing to see such a demonized disorder flipped on its head. The person with multiple identities isn’t some murderer with an evil alter- they’re the main character just trying to do their job, the disorder is exactly what it is in real life: a coping mechanism. Especially seeing as how old this game is, it does an pretty good job at positively portraying DID.
I actually didn't realize he had DID. I listened to this in the background and hadn't really played the game so that's refreshing to hear. I had alters when I was younger and you would never have known unless I told you. I only ever had one that was "not nice" and she only tried to hurt me, not others. The rest of them I still miss to this day as if I lost an entire friend group.
Something I want to point out is you can return to the town as Zach and people refer to you as him. It's not just a pallette swap, there's lines recorded for this. There is some speculation there that they know York AND Zach. Something to think about.

As a relatively young guy with a lot of white hair, the most unbelievable part of this supernatural nightmare is actually no one asking him if his hair is naturally white.
I think me and my other 3 brothers all had platinum blonde hair as kids. I imagine most likely... well, maybe thats not really his hair color but a signifier that the real person is there now n not just a background character, the scar being larger now is also a pretty telltale giveaway that the perspective changed, not that the hair color really matters but that the personality is changed.

My favourite part about Deadly Premonition is how when you unlock fast travelling by doing ridiculous side quests. It's a walkie talkie to call George to pick you up and drop you off at a place you visited. The catch is, you have to hear tire screeching noises everytime you do and it's hilarious.
This game is a hidden gem. Got the Switch version because heard of the oddities and thoroughly enjoyed myself. It's so incredibly ridiculous yet so charming. Sometimes I like to imagine everyone standing there as York is just talking to himself, nonsensically and they are like "Here he goes again."
Honestly, the only problem judging by this video to me is that the game seems to be completely mis-genred? It has no survival elements since you apparently have a infinite ammo strong gun a th the start and unlock more powerful weapons afterwards (which are also infinite ammo?) And the tone seems to be so farcical that calling it horror seems just fucking weird. Just to be clear, I didn't mind the tone, it seems to be an absolutely, gut-bustingly hilarious game, but it didn't feel even remotely like horror.

this game freaked me out the first time i played it, because the main character talks to a voice in his head(im assuming the player) named zach, so having a character look directly at the screen and address me by my name was so odd
This game unironically changed my life. Picked it up on impulse while at GameStop getting my 3rd red-ringed 360 replaced. (It was a wild time) My wife and I settled in to play, and found ourselves completely sucked in. Passed the game around to our entire friend group, and even dressed as York/Zach that Halloween. (She was York. We even made sure to have FK in our coffee…great days)
Plus the game doesn't nail home that Emily is supposed to be the love interest every 10 minutes. She can be viewed however by the player, and her character development would still make sense since she was genuinely helpful.
1:13:15 Honestly, that camera pan is executed to perfection. I love the way it slowly shifts focus from York and the sapling to the sapling and the locket before centering on the locket. It's like the camera reflects York's thoughts as they connect.
My theory has always been that York is actually some kind of other being, not just a personality. He protects York by merging with him and he possesses special powers. He actually exists to fight against the red seeds.
If he were to exist to fight against the red seeds and solve the case, Zach would've had to start existing only when and after he had the urge to do so, not before and during, which is what we are introduced in the beginning of the game.

Speaking of things being hidden from the very start, the license plates of everyone's cars actually reveal the secrets behind each of their characters. If you're good at guessing, you can get all the twists out of the way within the first hour of playing. For example, George's license plate is "HESTHE1", pointing at him being the killer. York's is "YZ1DRFL", which can be read in full as "York+Zach Wonderful" or, more telling "York+Zach are 1"
Can we just acknowledge the music for a second? The happy whistle song specifically. It’s just so out of place and sounds like a generic royalty free song but at the same time also fits in because of how weird the rest of the game is.
Oh my god I remember seeing someone playing this on one of the public library computers what feels like ages ago and being so unnerved by the image of Becky hanging in the shower. I never got to see the ending of the cutscene only the wires and the knife. It really freaked child me out a lot and I haven't been able to forget about it over 10 years later. I've tried so hard to find whatever game this was with little success. Utterly shocked to finally solve the mystery through a random youtube recommendation. The mixture of sheer whackiness, comedy and horror is just really funny to me and quite charming. I might need to get this myself on the Xbox 360 (I hear that the PC port is an awful port).

You know, I'd love to watch this as a movie or short TV series, or a remastered game of this, faithful to all the weirdness and strange music choices. The characters are what made this game, surprisingly, and the twists are quite great too! And all the foreshadowing is obvious to eagle-eyed players!

Twin Peaks. My friend played Deadly Premonition, he had never even heard of twin peaks until I showed him some clips. I've been showing him the series and in his words, it is *literally* "Deadly Premonition the series" You can *not* overstate how many references to Twin Peaks in this game LOL it's amazing, as a twin peaks fan I love it
A fine recap! For anyone who hasn't played the game, there is a wealth of entirely optional side content to flesh out the quirky inhabitants of Greenvale. The barbell and rain flower quest for George is but one example - In fact, it's entirely missable, meaning you can miss out on the fast travel mechanic for your entire playthrough if you don't find George pumping iron before solving Thomas's squirrel key quest! You can find bones around town for Willie that have a spooky implication for Bryan the grave digger. You can hunt for car parts hidden in the junkyard to have the General rebuild York's original car, and then race it in time trial courses. Also make use of an underutilized peeping mechanic to catch Thomas dancing in his dress, alone in his apartment, well ahead of the reveal.
So many and they definitely add to the experience, a big part of DP's charm is the quirky characters. A few more to list is the cooking quests with emily, the delivery man Q sideline, even the darts game at the bar to get more inventory slots. Some side quests reward you with useful items such as the legendary guitar which is a melee weapon that never breaks (Melee is the easiest way to deal with enemies, one smack kill) or the infinite ammo submachinegun. I have to play this game over again on the Director's cut, I only ever completed the 360 version and I hear the Director's cut has a lot more lore as well as some improvements.
@@stephens3909 I played the 360 version first and I liked it so much, I got the Director's Cut on PS3, day 1. It's... slightly better looking? It does have extra cutscenes at the beginning and end that raise some questions. I haven't finished DP2, so I don't know if they even affect that game's lore. I completed that version 100% and it's still my only platinum trophy to date.
I won't lie, this story was great. I know for a fact I'd have so much trouble slogging through the gameplay, but damn this story seems like it would make everything worth it

As bizarre as it is, the art direction is actually really pretty and cohesive. As you mentioned, an attention to detail definitely exists within this game. Also unexpectedly accurate dissociative disorder rep for the time?
It certainly seems like a lot of work was put into the story and the characters but the problem was that they were limited by the tech at the time. The story is so all over the place but it has some genuine greatness in its potential
4:17 this is a common mistake. they actually say "time to die" or "let me die", which [spoiler] is referencing York's mother and later Emily being both infected by the red seeds. They both said that letting them die is the only way to end their misery.
The story actually seems hella interesting ngl. It sorta reminds me of how yakuza games sprinkle silly moments throughout the story only to break you in the end with the plot
From the beginning I was half-expecting a quirky Noir with a schizophrenic detective using his psychosis to solve a mundane murder mystery...I definitely wasn't expecting the last minute detour into Lovecraft territory. 😳
With these weirder games, I have so much respect for how seriously the voice actors still take it. Their commitment to the bit really improves immersion.
its true look at RE it's basically just a bunch of anime archetypes with no real personality. But essentially I don't think video games need to rely on developing characters the way a book or something does.
Deadly Premonition is honestly my favorite story in any video game. When I first started playing it, I just thought it would be a silly Twin Peaks knockoff. I definitely wasn't expecting those emotional twists at the end. Even watching this video, I started tearing up a little at Emily's fate and the reveal of who Zach really is. The game gets a lot of credit for its quirky characters and ridiculous scenarios, but I don't think people give it enough credit for how emotionally engaging it is as well. Really hope you do a video on the sequel. I'm sure not many have played it considering it was a Switch exclusive for so long. I know it recently got a PC release, but still nothing for PS and Xbox console gamers.
It's one of my faves as well. Also, the way it portrayed George Woodmans relationship to Emily, his mother and his speech in the bar if you have a drink with him. Made me cry.
Yeah, I think the game does a lot right, mostly in the writing; so much so that I kind of take exception to calling it a bad game, I'd call it an extremely flawed but good game because it has so much heart and passion that shines through. It's really much more than the sum of its parts. if we can call games like Killzone and Resistance good just for being technically competent then I think we should be able to extend a little generosity to an ambitious little game like DP.

Sadly even though story is good actual gameplay was much much much worse than the first game. It was really boring to play unlike the first game. If they had removed all the filler in between it would be an actual good game

This game's got a special place in my heart. The first time I experienced it was in 2013. A friend brought it over one night and then a snowstorm literally froze us into the house for a week. We spent the whole week going through the game with him in the driver's seat. My friend was kind of an odd dude who was OBSESSED with old movie trivia, and my name is Zach. It was like it was literally us in the game, and that made it all the more fascinating
I met Swery at Pax East a few years ago when he was promoting The Good Life, and he was a really kind, really funny guy, language barrier and all. It was one of the highlights of the convention for me, and I wasn't very familiar with his work beforehand.
York is amazing. Most personality for a main character ever. I feel like, a lot of the time, main characters are void of personality: Often just doing 'the right thing', for the sake of not distancing the player from empathising with the MC
I like that Tomas is treated like all the other victims in the afterlife. In a pretty red dress, enjoying life, looking cute, being called a girl. Its very sweet, especially for the time.
For anyone else pleasantly surprised at how this weird budget Japanese game treats gender non-conforming people, I highly urge you to play or watch a playthrough of the director's other game, 'The Missing'. It's very life-affirming

Funny enough this game actually brought my friend and I closer together and is probably the reason we started podcasting together. In the early days of our friendship I would go visit him and we would play through this together. At first we did it for a laugh since it was often sited as a terrible game but then we got so invested in the story that we would play it for hours on end. The gameplay is terrible and the animation is janky but it's precisely the reason we loved it. If my coffee could talk it would say amazing video as always!

I'm glad I stumbled on this channel this year. Your videos have a good balance of information, humour and a personal touch that makes it easy to know you are genuinely interested in your subject matter. I was actually getting into a funk of only watching stuff I was subscribed to, but enjoying your postal video has made me give others a chance to.
My only hesitation going into this video is the knowledge that my half-memory of some of the game's themes and moments all twisted together is possibly the most "Deadly Premonition" way of remembering Deadly Premonition. I'm frankly afraid to get a more clear understanding of this video game version of being at a Denny's at 3:47AM on a chilly Tuesday morning.

rewatching this and just noticed that thomas is with the rest of the girls in the afterlife scene in a long red dress like the rest -- even if that storyline ended with a *touch* of conflict, I'm glad the devs let them be with others and dressed in the way that clearly made them happiest in that little moment
If you play this game,try playing on holidays on 5-6 hour intervals, use a guide for the side missions and immerse yourself. It'll transport you to a different dimension for sure. It may be a buggy mess, but it is one of the most unique pieces of media ever created for sure
The interesting thing is, from a purely plot point perspective, this is pretty awesome. There's a lot going on and its really interesting. Execution wise its completely bananas.

The Machinima "Two Best Friends Play" video of Deadly Premonition was my introduction to this game and it legit changed my life. I was a sheltered middle school child who had zero knowledge about video games or Twin Peaks, and now I'm a huge fan of both! It warms my heart that people are still discovering and loving this gem!

The York and Zack payoff feels incredibly satisfying to me, when I watched Twin Peaks the first time I was positive that Cooper was recording messages for no one and that Diane wasn’t real.
It’s a lot shorter, but maybe look up Beacon Pines, a CYOA-style game where you work with the narrator to find the best possible ending that will save a town full of cute animal characters (kind of like Night in the Woods, but not as existential).
This whole game just gave me massive Twin Peaks vibes through the whole thing, I think that’s why I liked it so much despite it being kinda janky. The characters are honestly the best part.
This game is utter genius. Camp at its best! The low-tech engine actually serves it well. Brilliant and vastly better than most of the stuff made last gen and this gen IMHO.
I love the depth of detail you reach in these long-form deep dives into interesting games and topics. This was one of the most enjoyable watches I ve ever had. Especially since my love of Deadly Premonition when I rented it one weekend as a kid. So much nostalgia.
The quirkyness of the characters and the general weirdness with gameplay really sells this game to me. It's so filled with strange off-shoot stuff to do, like finding rocking new melee-weapons (if you know, you know) to do transport missions with an old woman, whose pot is getting cold... yes, it's a thing. And some of these aren't even related to the main plot, you'll have to find them by yourself! I love how you make these longer videos and let people know a bout weirder games like this! And thank you for giving us a nice video to end this year with, I look forward to see what you cook up next year!
I love this game. Right from the start it actually shows you all of its twists and turns, but you never notice the first time you play it. Then there are the many, many secrets you would never find if you didn't just randomly do stuff. Awesome game, and an awesome video. Subscribed ;)

The writing in this game is actually genius, York talking about B movies while driving, him casually bringing up gruesome details about past cases, it's absolutely hilarious
bizarrely, despite this game being bad I found its story very good, if it weren't for the flaws and the silly things I would say that compared to heavy rain it is more interesting and has plot twists a little better worked and less imprevisives.
I think it’s because the style is copy pasted from Twin Peaks which has incredible writing and a unique tone

You can't overstate how massive Twin Peaks was in Japan. It influenced Silent hill, and Deadly Premonition and so much more.

Gas coming out, people running to help, they open the car door facing up and he comes crawling out with a cigarette still in his mouth. A pure comedy moment.

It's not "so bad it's good" in the same way a b movie can be. I assume this is where you drew your example from, maybe I am wrong. A videogame is a different medium and a generally different experience. There are generally great things about this game. The dialogue, the music, the concepts, the story, the character development, etc. Even if these things all fail in execution in some spots, the game generally is a great game. Is an entertaining experience as far as "can I define this by arbitrary metrics we know that can make this medium bad or good?" No. There are objectively terrible things as well. Liking it or not of course is subjective. But b movies tend to fail at everything and are often a product of creators delusional aspirations and egos. The narcissism engrained in a person to go "yeah, this is good. No matter what I made, it's great, because I'm Neil breen." (For example.)
This is almost like Tommy Wiseau's The Room of survival horror games.
I. Love. This. Game. Huge fan of Twin Peaks, and this game has extra special place reserved for me. I used to play this with my best friend few times a year, to 100% completion. We owned this in every possible platform. He died in 2014, I still play this game every year, very happily, with a heavy heart. We were huge horror fans, and this had extra special place, due to the quirckiness. I installed this on my pc around 2012, I still have that untouched version and hard drive in my computer, and I play that once a year, at the start of summer when he passed away... Rest in peace friend.
Sorry for rambling, I just wanted to emphasize how much this wierd old game means to me. :)

I really love the blend of humor and horror. I think it’s actually an extremely novel blend; horror movies start to wear down and lose their fear factor when it’s constantly trying to be scary/dreadful, as people just start to get tired of it.

The OG Resident Evil games really hits the mark with this. It's a shame the remakes tuned it down so much.
It’s actually so surprising and yet refreshing to see such a demonized disorder flipped on its head. The person with multiple identities isn’t some murderer with an evil alter- they’re the main character just trying to do their job, the disorder is exactly what it is in real life: a coping mechanism. Especially seeing as how old this game is, it does an pretty good job at positively portraying DID.
I actually didn't realize he had DID. I listened to this in the background and hadn't really played the game so that's refreshing to hear. I had alters when I was younger and you would never have known unless I told you. I only ever had one that was "not nice" and she only tried to hurt me, not others. The rest of them I still miss to this day as if I lost an entire friend group.
Something I want to point out is you can return to the town as Zach and people refer to you as him. It's not just a pallette swap, there's lines recorded for this. There is some speculation there that they know York AND Zach. Something to think about.
York is zach the whole time when he is saying his "fbi special agent Francis York Morgan please call me York " he's actually saying Francis Zach Morgan " please call me York which is why some characters act like "yeah Right york". My favourite part about Deadly Premonition is how when you unlock fast travelling by doing ridiculous side quests. It's a walkie talkie to call George to pick you up and drop you off at a place you visited. The catch is, you have to hear tire screeching noises everytime you do and it's hilarious.

This game is a hidden gem. Got the Switch version because heard of the oddities and thoroughly enjoyed myself. It's so incredibly ridiculous yet so charming. Sometimes I like to imagine everyone standing there as York is just talking to himself, nonsensically and they are like "Here he goes again."
Honestly, the only problem judging by this video to me is that the game seems to be completely mis-genred?
It has no survival elements since you apparently have a infinite ammo strong gun a th the start and unlock more powerful weapons afterwards (which are also infinite ammo?)

This game unironically changed my life. Picked it up on impulse while at GameStop getting my 3rd red-ringed 360 replaced. (It was a wild time)

Passed the game around to our entire friend group, and even dressed as York/Zach that Halloween.
(She was York. We even made sure to have FK in our coffee…great days)
I like that Emily isn't just a generic love interest, but actually has things to do
Plus the game doesn't nail home that Emily is supposed to be the love interest every 10 minutes. She can be viewed however by the player, and her character development would still make sense since she was genuinely helpful.

I love how weird and janky it is. The weirdness hits in some uncanny way and the jankiness and uglyness just elevates it.
Speaking of things being hidden from the very start, the license plates of everyone's cars actually reveal the secrets behind each of their characters. If you're good at guessing, you can get all the twists out of the way within the first hour of playing. For example, George's license plate is "HESTHE1", pointing at him being the killer. York's is "YZ1DRFL", which can be read in full as "York+Zach Wonderful" or, more telling "York+Zach are 1"
Can we just acknowledge the music for a second? The happy whistle song specifically. It’s just so out of place and sounds like a generic royalty free song but at the same time also fits in because of how weird the rest of the game is.

Oh my god I remember seeing someone playing this on one of the public library computers what feels like ages ago and being so unnerved by the image of Becky hanging in the shower. I never got to see the ending of the cutscene only the wires and the knife. It really freaked child me out a lot and I haven't been able to forget about it over 10 years later. I've tried so hard to find whatever game this was with little success. Utterly shocked to finally solve the mystery through a random youtube recommendation. You can *not* overstate how many references to Twin Peaks in this game LOL it's amazing, as a twin peaks fan I love it
A fine recap! For anyone who hasn't played the game, there is a wealth of entirely optional side content to flesh out the quirky inhabitants of Greenvale. The barbell and rain flower quest for George is but one example - In fact, it's entirely missable, meaning you can miss out on the fast travel mechanic for your entire playthrough if you don't find George pumping iron before solving Thomas's squirrel key quest!
You can find bones around town for Willie that have a spooky implication for Bryan the grave digger. You can hunt for car parts hidden in the junkyard to have the General rebuild York's original car, and then race it in time trial courses. Also make use of an underutilized peeping mechanic to catch Thomas dancing in his dress, alone in his apartment, well ahead of the reveal.
So many and they definitely add to the experience, a big part of DP's charm is the quirky characters. A few more to list is the cooking quests with emily, the delivery man Q sideline, even the darts game at the bar to get more inventory slots. Some side quests reward you with useful items such as the legendary guitar which is a melee weapon that never breaks (Melee is the easiest way to deal with enemies, one smack kill) or the infinite ammo submachinegun.
I have to play this game over again on the Director's cut, I only ever completed the 360 version and I hear the Director's cut has a lot more lore as well as some improvements.
@@stephens3909 I played the 360 version first and I liked it so much, I got the Director's Cut on PS3, day 1. It's... slightly better looking? It does have extra cutscenes at the beginning and end that raise some questions. I haven't finished DP2, so I don't know if they even affect that game's lore. I completed that version 100% and it's still my only platinum trophy to date.

From the beginning I was half-expecting a quirky Noir with a schizophrenic detective using his psychosis to solve a mundane murder mystery...I definitely wasn't expecting the last minute detour into Lovecraft territory. 😳
With these weirder games, I have so much respect for how seriously the voice actors still take it. Their commitment to the bit really improves immersion.

Straight facts. York is one of the most well rounded main characters I‘ve encountered in gaming and the supporting characters rarely ever miss
its true look at RE it's basically just a bunch of anime archetypes with no real personality. But essentially I don't think video games need to rely on developing characters the way a book or something does.
Deadly Premonition is honestly my favorite story in any video game. When I first started playing it, I just thought it would be a silly Twin Peaks knockoff. I definitely wasn't expecting those emotional twists at the end. Even watching this video, I started tearing up a little at Emily's fate and the reveal of who Zach really is. The game gets a lot of credit for its quirky characters and ridiculous scenarios, but I don't think people give it enough credit for how emotionally engaging it is as well.
Really hope you do a video on the sequel. I'm sure not many have played it considering it was a Switch exclusive for so long. I know it recently got a PC release, but still nothing for PS and Xbox console gamers.

Yeah, I think the game does a lot right, mostly in the writing; so much so that I kind of take exception to calling it a bad game, I'd call it an extremely flawed but good game because it has so much heart and passion that shines through. It's really much more than the sum of its parts.
if we can call games like Killzone and Resistance good just for being technically competent then I think we should be able to extend a little generosity to an ambitious little game like DP.

I love these kinds of decade old janky horror games finally being brought to light through your videos. It was so fun to watch this video and learn about this game. I bloody loved this game. I'd take my time while driving from place to place so I could listen to York's random ass conversations with Zach. Constantly questioning 'Why' but loving every janky moment of it.
I like how york had a more scareed and sad reaction to the dead dog then when he crashed is car. Honestly id feel the same

This game's got a special place in my heart. The first time I experienced it was in 2013. A friend brought it over one night and then a snowstorm literally froze us into the house for a week. We spent the whole week going through the game with him in the driver's seat. My friend was kind of an odd dude who was OBSESSED with old movie trivia, and my name is Zach. It was like it was literally us in the game, and that made it all the more fascinating

I met Swery at Pax East a few years ago when he was promoting The Good Life, and he was a really kind, really funny guy, language barrier and all. It was one of the highlights of the convention for me, and I wasn't very familiar with his work beforehand.

York is amazing. Most personality for a main character ever. I feel like, a lot of the time, main characters are void of personality: Often just doing 'the right thing', for the sake of not distancing the player from empathising with the MC
That would have more impact if the entire cast wasn't the same way.
I like that Tomas is treated like all the other victims in the afterlife. In a pretty red dress, enjoying life, looking cute, being called a girl. Its very sweet, especially for the time.

For anyone else pleasantly surprised at how this weird budget Japanese game treats gender non-conforming people, I highly urge you to play or watch a playthrough of the director's other game, 'The Missing'. It's very life-affirming
A masterpiece of a game this is. This is in my top 5 games of all time. The expansive side content, the stock sound effects, the entire Red Seed case. I technically own 4 different versions of this experience. PS3, PC, Switch and the board game that was officially made. Can't wait for your breakdown of A Blessing in Disguise

Funny enough this game actually brought my friend and I closer together and is probably the reason we started podcasting together. In the early days of our friendship I would go visit him and we would play through this together. At first we did it for a laugh since it was often sited as a terrible game but then we got so invested in the story that we would play it for hours on end. The gameplay is terrible and the animation is janky but it's precisely the reason we loved it. If my coffee could talk it would say amazing video as always!

Your videos have a good balance of information, humour and a personal touch that makes it easy to know you are genuinely interested in your subject matter. I was actually getting into a funk of only watching stuff I was subscribed to, but enjoying your postal video has made me give others a chance to.

My only hesitation going into this video is the knowledge that my half-memory of some of the game's themes and moments all twisted together is possibly the most "Deadly Premonition" way of remembering Deadly Premonition. I'm frankly afraid to get a more clear understanding of this video game version of being at a Denny's at 3:47AM on a chilly Tuesday morning.
I have to say, starting this channel off from news and then deciding to go to underrated games was the best thing you could've ever done, I have watched every game you've shown. Ill continue to watch and support you through 2023, Keep the wonderful content coming!
rewatching this and just noticed that thomas is with the rest of the girls in the afterlife scene in a long red dress like the rest -- even if that storyline ended with a *touch* of conflict, I'm glad the devs let them be with others and dressed in the way that clearly made them happiest in that little moment
If you play this game,try playing on holidays on 5-6 hour intervals, use a guide for the side missions and immerse yourself. It'll transport you to a different dimension for sure. It may be a buggy mess, but it is one of the most unique pieces of media ever created for sure

A game that really should have been movie. The fact they point out the combat feeling added in at the last minute especially.

The Machinima "Two Best Friends Play" video of Deadly Premonition was my introduction to this game and it legit changed my life. I was a sheltered middle school child who had zero knowledge about video games or Twin Peaks, and now I'm a huge fan of both! It warms my heart that people are still discovering and loving this gem!

It's clear that you've done your research and spent a fair amount of time playing the game and that's what made this video so interesting and easy to follow, despite the plot line of the game being all over the place. The York and Zack payoff feels incredibly satisfying to me, when I watched Twin Peaks the first time I was positive that Cooper was recording messages for no one and that Diane wasn’t real.
Deadly Premonition and Alan Wake are the most Twin Peaks feeling games ever made...and I love it

Cruelty Squad is basically Twin Peaks on Salvia and Ketamin.
It’s a lot shorter, but maybe look up Beacon Pines, a CYOA-style game where you work with the narrator to find the best possible ending that will save a town full of cute animal characters (kind of like Night in the Woods, but not as existential).
This whole game just gave me massive Twin Peaks vibes through the whole thing, I think that’s why I liked it so much despite it being kinda janky. The characters are honestly the best part.
This game is utter genius. Camp at its best! The low-tech engine actually serves it well. Brilliant and vastly better than most of the stuff made last gen and this gen IMHO.
I love the depth of detail you reach in these long-form deep dives into interesting games and topics. This was one of the most enjoyable watches I ve ever had. Especially since my love of Deadly Premonition when I rented it one weekend as a kid. So much nostalgia.
The quirkyness of the characters and the general weirdness with gameplay really sells this game to me.
It's so filled with strange off-shoot stuff to do, like finding rocking new melee-weapons (if you know, you know) to do transport missions with an old woman, whose pot is getting cold... yes, it's a thing.
And some of these aren't even related to the main plot, you'll have to find them by yourself!
I love how you make these longer videos and let people know a bout weirder games like this!

I love this game. Right from the start it actually shows you all of its twists and turns, but you never notice the first time you play it. Then there are the many, many secrets you would never find if you didn't just randomly do stuff. Awesome game, and an awesome video. Subscribed ;)
