Love your energy Brittany! And you shared so many insightful Lessons Learned. Even as an experienced backpacker, a multi-month adventure would be new to me. And it may still happen this year, 2025!
I'm in the final few months of prep/training for my thru-hike, which will ideally kick off the start of April. I even got convinced by friends and family to vlog it after I said my plan was to do the hike AND play basketball in every state along the way. Only got two videos up so far, but I can already tell making videos will be the hardest part of the whole adventure. No matter what, I doubt I'll be as comfy in front of thee camera as you seem to be. Great vid, and great tips!
How exciting! Vlogging is a great way to look back on the journey! I posted most of my videos after the fact.. it was a good way to reflect on my journey on as well! Dont let it take away anything from you or the moment though! Youll treasure the content forever either way! Im still awkward with the camera but its also something that gets better and easier within time! You are about to embark on one life changing adventure! Im rooting you on!
Hi Question: If a nice small RV followed you up the trail giving support ( re supply, slack packing options, fresh cooked meals, bed, shower, flush toilet, laundry, shuttles, heat, AC, and positive reinforced). Would you have accepted that? Are there enough spots to meet with the hiker? Would you still want to go out to eat and stay at Motels? It would have rocketed you up the trail. Would you have wanted that?
Hi! Sounds like you are considering some options on your thru hike? When are you thinking? I did take advantage of trail magic, including slack packing. Now, I didn't do it the whole trail and only slack packed a hand full of times along the AT... but running into parking lots and finding trail magic always seemed to be at the perfect timing. I did meet up with friends. other hikers. we shared hotels. and I packed out hamburgers sometimes. All this is a preference. to me, it didn't make me any less. I was still out there hiking the thing and sleeping in a tent. A shower, bed, town food all became luxuries that I looked forward to so much. Im not sure if I would want the support for the entire trail.. as I feel like that would take away some of the experience.. BUT once again thats a preference. at the end of the day, no journey is the same and its your journey. If I had to do it over- I would meet less with my real life friends, spend more time with hikers, take more zeros, take a trail zero, meet more people and eat even more food lol
@hikingwithpuddin Thanks for responding. I did my hike (The New England Trail) that's good enough for me for now. The latest FKT record holder must have used a RV style support. It's definitely a different hike. BUT YOU WOULD HAVE STILL HIKED THE AT!!!! Bragging rights for life. We are trying to come up with a faster, safer, more enjoyable, less expensive, much more diet friendly way of hiking the AT. The success rate should drastically increase, bringing a healthier economy to the trail towns. But like you suggest, it's not going to be the same as an unsupported hike, and many may not want that.
@ oh hahaha completing a record is a different ball game. I know what you mean and can say my opinion has been very vague. I personally think a supported FKT might as well be a runner. Shouldn’t be considered “hiking” Now someone out there taking 6 months hiking it and has a Rv off and on and part of the journey so what ya know. But. I do believe the two is different
@ right. Supported is so much easier to get the nutrition you need. It’s hard in today’s time cause the fast food and quick stops that convenience is so unhealthy. When I was on the cdt I did more backpackers meal. It helped. They are just really pricy.
I can't say as I disagree with any of your tips. The only thing I would add is don't wait too long to bring your cold weather gear back. I was using a 60-degree hostel bag up until the middle of Vermont. I probably should have switched it out a couple of weeks sooner. It was great on the hot, muggy nights in the mid-Atlantic states, but not once the nights started cooling off.

I can totally relate to that as well! The weather is so unpredictable. being prepared either direction is key!
Happy 2025 Brit miss my co worker!
