Last year, we had a hail storm in Ohio and I heard that intense “roar” sound before it hit. I didn’t know what the hell it was, but it sounded like a waterfall getting louder and louder until chunks of ice were falling everywhere. The stones were quarter sized, but the hail precip was really dense.
I remember flying under an anvil in VFR conditions.... Went from 3 thoudand to nearly top of the anvil, about 20 k... Then back down to about 2500 feet, west side of Livermore CA... I managed to stay right side up, but was difficult at best... Lucky. Bay aporoch had a few choice words... Uneventful landing at SFO...
Very interesting but unfortunately here in the uk we don't get strong storms most of the time they don't have a anvil like in the pictures
