I've been regularly impressed by their sense of duty, clear and honest replies, and admissions of errors. Sir Christopher was not one of those civil servants. He acted more like Thérèşă Covfefe in a Breakfast TV show studio. But with less charm. Even the KC was sick and tired of him a few times. Each time he changed from questions to statements (even for the person changing the exhibits) my heart skipped and I just thought "Chris, you done screwed up bad... 😳😁"

I was amazed there was no plan what so ever.
The obvious question is why, when Public Health English was originally responsible for testing across the whole of the UK was it dropped by the devolved administrations in January when they set up their own systems which rapidly started to outperform the UK laboratory. It's pretty clear that the devolved administrations knew in JANUARY that the Public Health Laboratory in England was going to fail. QC's not got a full brief here.

There was a working test and trace system available and used by many EU countries including Ireland. One major difference with that system to what the UK wanted is that the UK wanted to “mine” the data. Totally unacceptable to most people. In ireland we not stopped using ours a couple of months ago. It was Simple, Easy and Reliable. It also held the certification of covid vaccine information for international travel.

The idea was that covid took somewhere between 1-14 days in the incubation period to show any signs of the symptoms , so testing positive say on day 3 (trial experimental drugs March-June 2020), gave you a better chance at surviving vs on day 14 when the viruses completely consumed your body in the absolute worse case. I understand what you are saying, but we wont really know if this helped or not in the first covid lockdown .
Knowing you have covid means you don't spread covid, simple, it definitely made a difference, however little its still lives saved. Not disputing it was a money racket for the contractors.
