I place the tuber about two inches below the top of the sand. Place the pot in water that is at least 72 degrees. In a few days it will sprout. After the sprout gets floating leaves which grow to 3 inches, remove the plant from the tuber and pot into a 6 to 10 inch pot. Often the tuber will give you several more sprouts to pluck off also
great video! I am new to water lilies and I over wintered mine in my green house, but when I went to repot them the roots are all gone. The bulb is solid and there are a few tiny tiny leaves, so what should I do now? I live in Murrieta, Ca and our frost days (not many anyway) are past us.
Thank you! Can I use this method for hardy water lily? About a month ago, I bought a hardy water lily. I cut the rizhome in half, planted the one with the crown and leaves, and put the other half in a bucket of water for propagation. Now, I have like seven daughter plants and the rhizome keeps sprouting a new one and I don't have more place to store them. I want to store the rhizome so it won't keep sprouting and won't rot. How should I do this? I live in a tropical region.
You should not have to with those plants as they should be perennials no matter where you live. I suggest just leaving them in place outside all winter. They need the cold dormancy time period.
Thank you for sharing. Very informative.
Excellent video. Sent me 4 great water hyacinths

Can you store in the fridge? I live in an apartment so there's just heated apartment or outside. And outside gets well below freezing.
Don't store in the fridge. It would be best to store in a cool dark place like a basement but a closet or cupboard works well also.

Hardy lillies are even easier. You can just leave them in the water throughout winter and they will grow again next Spring.
Question I wonder if this can be done with iris and cattail as well?! Sorry I’m a pond plant novice.

Where do I buy sand
Menards, Home Depot, Lowes
can this be done with moist peat moss instead of sand?
