Siberia is a huge geographical and historical region of Russia, stretching from the Ural Mountains to the east, to the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Siberian expanses spread over 13,100,000 km2, which is more than three quarters of the area of the Russian Federation or 10% of the entire land on the planet. The territory of Siberia is almost equal to the area of Canada, the world's second largest state, and far exceeds the area of such large countries as China, India or even Australia, which occupies an entire continent.

The harsh climate makes the Siberian region unattractive for mass settlement. For the most part, these are uninhabited lands where civilization has failed to curb wildlife. Only 36 million Russians live here, with an average population density of less than three people per square kilometer.
