This is exactly the analysis and presentation i want when i seek out a review vid! 2 vids ago i was gearing up to buy these! Such was the 'bro science' that supported the reviews. Now i'm having second thoughts. Thanks, excellent video!
ZIPP used to have a dimpled set of rims (NSW454) but I believe gave up on the idea. It’s an aerodynamic principle that dimples smooth out the airflow and keep it attached to the surface longer, same as the principle governing golf ball design.
To elaborate on it, it's the side entry with no safety engagement or cap to hold the spokes what's dangerous. My Elitewheels drive set have them just like that. It's been flawless, but I drive my bike quite safely and never in messy roads.
A team made was unable to ride home after 1 spoke broke because it took enough tension off another that it fell out (this was on another brands wheels).
Interesting rundown. I'm getting flooded with adverts for "budget" and "bargain" carbon wheels from a bunch of Chinese wheel brands. SuperTeam, Elite Wheels and ICAN are pitching carbon around the 300 or 400 quid mark. Any chance of offering some insight into whether they are worth considering? Or if I'd be better off buying higher-end aluminium wheels from the likes of DT Swiss or Hunt? BTW: My criteria are price, weight, performance, serviceability and availability of spares. Cheers
Hi Brian, The short answer is, Yes, they're very much worth considering. Out of all the brands I've tested, ICAN has impressed me the most. They offer the best quality for the price. The only thing that can give you problems in the long-run, is the availability of spares. Bearings and spokes are generic, and can be bought anywhere, freehubs on the other hand aren't. ICAN do sell freehubs, but it's worth considering getting a spare one when you purchase the wheels. The star ratchet style freehub is a generic unit, and can be seen on the more expensive wheels like Nepest. If you can get a wheelset with the star ratchet, then this overcomes the freehub issue. Unfortunately, ICAN aren't offering this yet. HUNT - This is a good product too, I run a few sets. You are however buying the same product, but with their name stamped on it. The HUNT product gives you piece of mind that the spares will be available. But as I say, the only real concern here is the freehub. So buying a spare or going with the star ratchet style hub will overcome this. A well cared for freehub can last upto 10k miles. Knowing what I know, if I was spending my own money, I'd buy ICAN with a spare freehub. Hope that helps. Jon
@@ribblevalleycyclist Thanks for the comprehensive advice and guidance. As it happens, I've been looking at an ICAN frame - the X-Gravel. I might save a little cash by getting a frame and wheels from one supplier. Now I'm off to watch your ICAN G25 video to see what's what. Cheers
really informative vid, hope you could test more Chinese brand and also some more wheelsets from big brand cause i really curious about their quality and their quality. Also hope you can test the aerodynamics property of the rims using some aero sensors.
Thanks, glad you liked it. Getting a lot of Chinese brands pushing stuff my way, and have some big brand wheels coming through soon. I need to go easy though, don't want to end up replicating the great job that Luke is doing over at @TraceVelo And anyway, I'm not sure if I can handle all those baguette emoji's 🥖🥖🥖 🤣 Aerodynamics....... Think thats all a bit too technical for my simple channel. I'll leave that one to the watt chasing experts!!
Great analysis. I'm looking for a wheelset because I've got a busted wheel, but these aren't for me. They lost me as a potential buyer when it came to that hub.
I see a lot of the higher end Chinese brands using carbon spoke 2:1 configuration with radial spokes on the disk side opposite of the drive side lately. Radial spokes are not good for transfer of brake or drive torque. It looks nice, saves some weight but will there be any problems after 10,000 miles? It would be nice if more of these kind of wheel reviews got into the spoke lacing, pro and cons and really sorted out what's what because I think it affects the long term performance of the wheels. For what its worth, I ordered a set of 9Velo, steel spoke and they come 24 front, back and 1:1. I just couldn't wrap my head around the radial spoke idea but some nice wheelsets come that way these days from china brands
I have looked into a new set of Chinese wheels, possibly with carbon spokes. Looking at brands like Elite, Superteam, CRW, GoZone. These Superteams look nice on paper but multiple reviews have highlighted there's issues with them. I would steer clear of Superteam, despite their good look.
Peak Torque did a video recently about these side entry spokes at the hub and "redundancy"- effectively warning that under extreme deformation of the wheel/rim breakage the spokes can come out causing total wheel failure/collapse... Think I prefer my straight pull spokes the DT Swiss style whereby they cannot pop out the side!! ua-cam.com/video/2HQrkIL87g4/v-deo.html
For $100 less, I'd much rather buy the tried and tested Elite wheels Drives. $1299 for a gap in the freehub, misaligned bladed spokes, off center wheels and some debris inside the rim. I'll give these a miss. On the plus side, if you do buy these wheels, you'll be supporting your local bike store right out of the box. Regarding the spoke and hub interface, surely with a UCI stamp of approval, the wheels would have been subjected to tests and forces that would have stressed that interface? Im somewhat doubtful of the claims but hey, even roller-coasters despite being safer than driving to the them park, they still have a chance to derail. From an engineering stand point, its impossible to create a project that is 100% fail-safe regardless of circumstance. There will always be anomalies.
i have evo super team. my impression is their bearing not so good mine already have problem just for walk it about 4000km it start shown wear no more smooth. and this wheel not feel safe if you run this wheel in windy day. what i experience this wheel are badly impact when cross wind happen it enough slowing you down and compromise your balance. and the last i do not like from this wheel is the ratchet system, the spring are to stiff yes it generate sound louder but it made the wheel resistance greater. it not good for retaining speed. in long run you will notice you feel less efficient compare with use DTswiss Hub. DTswiss hub have softer spring it just enough to engage the ratchet system it sound nice to not rough like superteam Hub sound it to rough. i hope they will fix their bearing quality and the hub spring need to be softer.
if you used campy wheels or new 2023 dura ace or ultegra wheel you know noting better than ball bearing. sealed bearing are not as smooth as ball bearing.

Goes off to Google ‘Bro Science’…… 😂😂
My compliments, that is a very thorough, good review, other reviewers should take note.
Thank you 👍
These wheels look mint! I have another set of superteam wheels on my steel bike and I've been impressed with them! Great job!
Oh, they look amazing!!! Will be interesting to see how they ride.
Your videos are really well done. Very informative, and excellent presentation. Thank you!
Thank you very much!
Awesome jobJon,another diamond production.
Thanks, Antony. That one was a big one to make and produce. Need to stop saying yes to wheel reviews 😂
As soon as I saw the spoke/ hub retention I was waiting for your opinion. I'm in agreement.
ZIPP used to have a dimpled set of rims (NSW454) but I believe gave up on the idea. It’s an aerodynamic principle that dimples smooth out the airflow and keep it attached to the surface longer, same as the principle governing golf ball design.
I've heard that said before. It's a dark science!!
PT made the same point on the straight pull spokes...
To elaborate on it, it's the side entry with no safety engagement or cap to hold the spokes what's dangerous. My Elitewheels drive set have them just like that. It's been flawless, but I drive my bike quite safely and never in messy roads.
A few have said this, so I just went and watched the PT video. Very interesting, and he explained it better than I did 🤣
A team made was unable to ride home after 1 spoke broke because it took enough tension off another that it fell out (this was on another brands wheels).
They release a new version of this. I think to solve this issue on straight pull. It's the "S-ALL evo II" which now uses a DT Swiss hub.
Very good review really like how in-depth you went. Definitely some production issues there it’ll be good to how these issues are riding the wheels.
Glad you enjoyed it. Will be interesting to see how they ride and perform. 👍
Analogue dial gauges on your wheel alignment thingy, interesting, very 1950s.
Nothing wrong with that, it works.
Find it a better visual representation of what’s happening.
Three mounths ago I bought a set of a carbon wheels, the first level and I am realy happy with it.great value.appolagise for m'y Bad english.😂😂
Your English is very good 👍
They’ve got those non-captured spoke mantles in the hub flange, which peak torque has recently highlighted as a serious safety concern.
Oh which you bring up right at the end. But you’ve got peak torque agreeing with you!
A few have said this, so I just went and watched it. Very interesting, and he explained it better than I did 🤣
I love the name of the wheel, "SUPERTEAM" it's cool af. The font is on point. Sucks that the wheel isn't very good 😔
Oh, they look amazing!!

Great educational video!
I have a Campagnolo SR 12s cassette. Can I use my cassette on the Superteam freehub?

Cheers Bud. Looking forward to your Garmin video.
Peak Torque has the same opinion re spoke head retention in the hub
One spoke failure could lead to wheel collapse as the spoke tension is so high 😢😢
A few have said this, so I just went and watched it. Very interesting, and he explained it better than I did 🤣
Great video! Thank you!
You’re welcome! 👍
Good job! Love the video. Wont be buing those probably, for that price point.
Thanks for the video

Great review Jon, seems that the QCat the organisation needs addressing
Of the three companies you reviewed, which is your top choice?
The best wheels technology are the Nepest. However, the best value are the ICAN.
Those runout numbers are hilarious
aren't they too stiff? (thanks to carbon spokes), isn't better to have steel spokes for "normal" riding or gran fondos etc .... ?
Undrilled rim bed, the only way to go nowadays in my opinion
could you review Elite please?
Nicely timed. The Elite Drive 40's will be my next video.
@@ribblevalleycyclist Can you review the Marvel50 pls?
Interesting. I really like my ICAN Aero 50 and Aero 55 and Elite 50D wheels. Your tests on tnis sample were not so encouraging.
I'll be honest, I've not ridden them yet...... they make me nervous!
👏👏👍👍
😊😊

Great review again but these wheels are just as you say, form over function.

Thanks Barry, will give it a watch. Do follow PT, he talks a lot of sense.

For £1000, the 'It'll do' statement along with no end caps on the hubs and debris in the rim is a instant no thanks from me.
Ain't gonna argue with that!

Great review as always but not for me 👍 Pete 🚴🏻👍
I can relate to that 😉
if you used campy wheels or new 2023 dura ace or ultegra wheel you know noting better than ball bearing. sealed bearing are not as smooth as ball bearing.
I think there is a lot to be said for old ball bearings. Not so good in poor weather conditions, but easier to maintain
Discount code please 😢?
I only give out discount codes when I’ve fully tested and recommend a product.
when people "review" wheels all of them never do a drag test for the wheels
My new Berd mtb wheel set cost me like 6k $ 😄
Hmm..🤔 "premium shineese" .. # sposoredmuch
Premium? Chinese? I'll book my hospital appointment
pretty crap wheels
