The water represents the relationship. The dripping (at first) she didnt notice, represents the abuse that she didnt realise she was receiving. But when she opened the door, the flooding water represents how there is too much of the abuse in the relationship to show that u NOW realise it. So basically, u didnt realise the abuse until there was too much of it. And thats what billie actually said in the “behind the scenes” of this music video. She obviously didnt say everything above in THE EXACT WORDS but thats what its about. And its a great metaphor.

Miley Cyrus, Olivia Rodrigo and now her... Just loving how these huge pop stars dabble in rock music. I love how the lines between the genres get blurrier and blurrier. There was never a chance that Britney Spears would have done something like this in the 2000s and today it's not even that big of a deal. Just love it. (Also kinda shows me how ahead of her time Pink was)

You must be young. What even is "pop" (popular) music? It was classical, then big band in the 1920s, then Motown-style/Americana, then bands/the Beatles. Later it was indie grunge in the 90s. It had a commercial big business period in the 2000s which sucked; people still made great creative music but it wasn't as widely known. Now it seems like directly releasing music outside of a big label is allowing people to be more creative again.

I agree with you she is incredible her voice is timeless she can sing something from the 1920s lounge singer to the 1950s like the beginning of this song still very modern New Age sound totally unique to her which she does quite often and all the way to rock she’s not one genre she is every genre mixed together she’s so unique and Someone like her really only comes once in a lifetime I’m 35 I’ve never heard anybody like her I highly doubt I’m gonna hear anybody like her again before I die and I love it such a unique incredible experience

@@iamlpinthe312 She’s very well known in the states but she’s not that popular in comparison because there are many artists that she sounds a lot like yes she’s unique but she has a very distinct nasal voice not in a negative way that is much like Cyndi Lauper Billie Eilish is just in a league of her own yes there are tons of artists that can sing softly like she does but 99% of them cannot belts cannot do all genres easily cannot hit all of those notes like she can and definitely does not have the lyrical creativity that she does it’s no offense against any other artist but she is literally a once in a lifetime artist and I couldn’t be happier For her

I’m not into Pop music at all to be honest, im a metalhead through and through, but this song is beautiful, there’s so much pain being expressed in the lyrics. It helps that there’s a cheeky solo in the second half

She’s different. She brings something new to the table when it comes to Pop. She can also actually sing and write her own stuff. Everything she releases comes off as real and raw. Nothing feels fake from her like most Pop artists.

    • @barbarjinx3802

She appeals to metalheads because of her honest raw emotions. Plus the music is just cool and melodic.

  • @iamlpinthe312
    @iamlpinthe312 3 роки тому +103

The beginning has the feel of a torch song and the lyrics are reminiscent of Patsy Cline. The ambiance in the beginning is soft and warm and bright, very nostalgic old school romantic, like a fantasy. But Billie is wearing a big black t-shirt. The song is light and clear but there’s a disconnect between her words and her surroundings. At first she’s not aware of the drops of water until it becomes a watershed moment. As she’s swimming to the surface and singing “ scared me to death, as I’m wasting my breath” it feels both literal and metaphorical. And when she breaks the surface it’s dark and raining but she’s realized “ I don’t relate to you. …I’d never treat me this shitty”. And now her words, and the music are in sync with the surrounding. And she’s no longer romanticizing what was an emotionally abusive relationship. The water feels almost baptismal; a washing away of ,and breaking free from what held her down. Billie and Finneas are really conceptual artists with their music creation and production. I love them.

Something you may be misinterpreting due to your headphones is the distortion.
When listened to in a car with a sound system or headphones with really good low end, that distortion is actually VERY heavy bass. Check it out if you can lol
There’s still some distortion, but not as much as what it sounds like through headphones that can’t access those frequencies.
She does this in a few other songs too. Namely Xanny and Listen Before I Go.

Lifelong metalhead here (and huge Jinjer fan), but I love Billie SO much. This song spoke to me. I loved how the beginning sounded like her vocals were underwater. Then I loved hearing the layered screams towards the end. Imagine if she’d bring in someone to do guest vocals like Lzzy Hale, Amy Lee, or Taylor Momsen from The Pretty Reckless.

The story embodied by this song is about an erstwhile boyfriend who mistreated Billie, as first disclosed in the documentary, and how happy she is to have given him the boot. The tale, however, is told in reverse order, with the first part representing how glad she now is to be rid of him, while the second part reveals the actual mistreatment that prompted her to ditch him--with the story being presented in this reverse order for dramatic purposes. That Billie (and Finneas) structured the song this way is masterful, and the contrast in her singing style from the first segment to the second shows a profound understanding of how to fashion a dynamic presentation. The stark contrast displayed by Billie's vocal from one segment to the next shows she has strong versatility that fits neatly with great sensibility. The power of her singing in the second half by all rights should put an end to the utterly bogus contention that she can't sing.

Super reaction! I guess if you didn't like Billie's Music and FINNEAS's production, it wouldn't be quite so super, but you appreciate their artistic sensibilities and the MUSE that inspires Billie. The first 2:29 that you played on piano really made me think, it might be better with piano than the nylon string guitar. As you know, there's a multitude of bright reactors, but many do operate mostly out of their head ( isn't that a strange statement! who doesn't? ), but I like that you stated your response was from the heart. You convey that sentiment genuinely and warmly - personally, I believe it is actually quite easy to overly parse a song, and pick it to pieces and then it's almost lost. Appreciation for the Art and creativity is important; critique regarding originality and technical issues [ both of which are over my head ], I think are important. And, of course, tastes vary so much - I love Billie and FINNEAS's music. Thanks for covering this.

The reason why this sounds good is because it feels like a massive release. I love her breathy stylistic choice but that in juxtaposition to this makes this feel so satisfying to my hears as it releases all the tension built by the breathy and quieter songs. That’s why both are so genius because if we didn’t have the breathiness this wouldn’t be nearly as satisfying to hear! This contrast is emulated in the two halves of the song

Thank you for your review! As a music education student, I found it such an interesting song!! Im pretty sure at one point they use a diminished chord (or sometimes it’ll say d minor b5). Its so much fun!

You got yourself a new sub! That was one of the best reactions to this video. Clearly a masterpiece song and your mad skills on the piano on fire.

I can't believe you can jump in with the piano like that. Wow. It inspires me to keep studying music.

Such a solid song. The lovely melody and the telephone sound blend in an oddly calmly way, despite the tragic lyrical content. Thanks for doing this reaction, David!
P.S. Could you react to Dave's Three Rivers? It's UK hiphop, so not what I usually see on this channel, but I think you'll enjoy it.
    I'm sure you'll love Jinjer's new track Mediator btw😉

For some reason this song makes me think of the song The Thin ice by Pink Floyd too, especially the sinking into water in the video.
