Let me explain why Indian audience is damn eager for this: In Hinduism, there are 4 Yugas (Eras). Satya Yuga (Golden Age) Treta Yuga (Silver Age) Dwapar Yuga (Copper Age) and Kali Yuga (Iron Age). The level of wickedness, badness and misery in world increases in every consecutive Yuga. As years pass, one Yug ends and another begins. Ramayan happened in Treta Yug. Mahabharat happened in Dwapar Yug. Currently we are in the Kali Yug (2024 AD). Now the interesting part, The Yugas aren't linear, they are in a circle like a clock, the end of Kali Yug would begin the Satya Yug. But as Satya Yuga is the holiest of all and Kaliyug the unholiest, the transition of these two Yugas won't be the same as the other pairs. When this happens, the Universe will face an entire wipe out and only the good souls will survive that will carry on the Satya Yuga once again. It is like a circle of life. What begins will end, and the end will bring a new beginning! There are more details of each Yuga, how they were, what were the timelines, how were the humans then, etc.
Now, coming to the movie... You need to know that in these four Yugas, to maintain the balance and prove the victory of goodness vs evil (Dharma vs Adharma), Lord Vishnu, the Proprietor of the Universe incarnates in the mortal world for 10 times, called the 10 Avatars or Dashavatar. HERE IS THE EXPLANATION
The movie is set in the year 2898 AD which is 6000 years after the events of Mahabharata. The city of Kashi ( also known as varanasi ) is the oldest city in the world. It is the same city from the opening scene shown in the trailer. Prabhas is playing the role of a Bounty hunter who wants to go to COMPLEX ( the most advanced & resourceful city in the universe shown in this trailer ) . The concept of god has ended in this timeline. But a ray of hope emerges with deepika giving birth to the 10th (Dashavatar ) of Lord vishnu (to be known as Kalki, hence the title of the film ). Now the people who control the complex in this timeline are afraid of the child who is in deepika’s womb (Kalki). So they set a bounty on deepika’s name ( which bujji & bhairava are trying to collect because they want to go to the complex ). This is where Ashwathama comes in to save deepika ( as she carries Kalki in her womb ). Thus We can see Prabhas facing off against Ashwathama . One more thing Ashwathama was very heartbroken and disappointed when Pandavas won the battle of Mahabharata , that is why he ended their lineage by killing all the children of Pandavas in their sleep ( actually he was trying to kill the Pandavas but in the dark night he could not differentiate between them ) . Furthermore he even fired Bramhastra on the only child of arjun & uttara who was in her womb killing the child instantly. Although the child was revived later on by Krishna himself but in fury he gave a curse to Ashwathama of immortality ( to live with wounds and puss ) , also he took away his Mani ( which had great omnipotence power ). That is why Ashwathama is trying to redeem himself by protecting the child in the womb. Hope this explains everything ❤
