  • Today we start a new experiment to see if we can take some common budget bourbons and finish them in new white oak charred barrels and turn them into something special. What can we do with Ancient Ancient Age 10 Star, Buffalo Trace, and Very Old Barton (86)?

You can reuse these many times. The trick is to fill it first with some cheap Port or Sherry after 3 uses. Then dump the Sherry and fill with Bourbon to finish

I’ve done the barrels and the charred oak spirals. I liked the spirals best because the flavor changes were mild and not soooooo much oak imparted.

It might be cool to put a stout beer in after the bourbon and then go back to bourbon for the third use.

Thanks for doing this! I’ve been wondering if these barrels were legit. Can’t wait to see the results

Great video! Those small barrels work great in about a month. I'm on my forth fill with one using home made rum, and it's just as good as the first fill. Maybe a little less charred flavor.

    Very cool video!
I actually make bottle lamps and have made one out of the smaller Buffalo trace
I’d be happy to turn your bigger bottle into a lamp.

I wouldn’t wait a full month. Small barrels will age much faster. Take a small sample every 2 weeks, not 4. Just to make sure you like the direction its heading and it isnt ruined by week four. Just imo 👍👍

You aren't the only to suggest that and after looking into it more because of ya'lls feedback I am going to do every week for the first month then as you say after that

I put 5 l of Maker mark in my 5 l barrel we tried it 2 weeks later and I gotta say I'm not impressed so now I'm just in it for the long haul I'll try again in a couple months

The thing I am wondering is; If the bourbons have already been aged to the level the distillers feel is right, what is the point of barreling it more? If you have just distilled yourself some moonshine with corn and barley then absolutely, but the expense of buying the barrels then the time to soak the bourbon to hopefully get something better I guess is a fun experiment but nothing more.

    3 x 3L barrels is pretty hardcore! I was worried I had gone overboard with 2 x 1L barrels.

Just picked up a barrel and I'm going to try aging some Benchmark Full Proof. I got the barrel a few days ago and its my first ever attempt doing something like this, so I'm debating on if it should be called April Full's Proof or April Fool's Proof.

I look forward to hearing the results in 30, 60, 90 days. Personally I’ve never tried the ancient ancient age, but not a fan of std. ancient age, but I do love Buffalo and Barton’s 100.

Someone posted a link to a chart about converting surface area of the barrel to age. If it is accurate, 90 days in a 3L should equate to almost a year.

It would be interesting to do that experiment, but with the same whiskey, with several barrels with different char levels.

Next time I will do different levels. The place I got them from only had level 3

@@montezumac2237 I bottled it at 65 days. It's definitely still makers taste but with a lot more. It's kinda like makers 46 and with more flavors. It's good but I think 26 days was the best. So after 65 days I lost around 1.1 liters to the angles. I checked the proof It's pretty much the same if anything it went up by 2. I now have since filled it with id guess 20 different burbouns and whiskeys, ive been trying it so far not so good but ive been refilling it as it evaporats. It's mixed with cheap stuff and expensive stuff.

did you try blending any bourbons then re-barrel?

I would taste these in a couple days. Waiting an entire month is very risky. These can get over woody real quick.

I think you are right. I'll try an ounce of each every week in the first month. There is a lot of $$ in this and would probably cry if it all went to crap
