It seems like a missed opportunity by Frontier. I would be willing to hand over decent amount of Arx in order to get access to well designed color schemes made by frontier. But that is not available unfortunately
I thought for a while that I must be going crazy because I remembered this being a feature in the game back before I took my ~5 year long hiatus from ED, but now I remember we used an online tool to pick the colour using a screenshot to preview the change and that would spit out the XML to copy/paste. I seem to remember Frontier embracing third party solutions like that back in the early days with their community interactions. Lots of us used voice attack back then too lol.
@@lucarmyfool4800 I actually was a Linux Kernel developer in my previous job, but no - 3DMigoto originally comes from the NVidia 3D Vision modding scene and is heavily tied to DirectX 11, so this is not something that can be ported to another platform, though there is no reason an equivalent tool could not be created (Helifax is our communities OpenGL guy, and has his own modding tools).
@@lucarmyfool4800 Actually, if ED is using wine/proton it might be worth a try, since they implement the DX11 API on Linux, and I recall a few months ago someone tried it and was able to get 3DMigoto to load. They were after stereoscopic rendering, which definitely won't work since it relies on the 3D Vision automatic components in the NV driver which is absolutely not supported on Linux, but since that is irrelevant for this mod it might be worth a try. Make sure you omit the nvapi.dll wrapper (if it was included). Their feature request: github.com/bo3b/3Dmigoto/issues/128
This is totally cool. I tried the “standard” way to change colours and hated it. I will try this when i log on tomorrow. It looks perfect. I like that you can turn cockpit lighting down, i find it too bright. Great video and great Mod thanks to all concerned.
Start watching some old videos to get myself back into the base game with small things that I have up to this stage not really looked into, and I stumbled upon this video. Thank you for a fantastic hint it's definitely made a massive difference to the current gameplay. What is however concerning is one of the comments that I read below which questions why these aspects have not been added to the game which is now effectively over 6 years old and is clearly something that the community has been asking for some time now. This disconnect between the developers and the community is possibly why they have been such conflict over the last few months. If there could be just one message I would send to FDev that is to start listening to your community, NOW, with an open heart if you truly want this game to be played for the next years to come.

Also note that installing this will disable your F1 - F12, so you can't take screenshots on steam anymore, I tried changing the bind for my screen shot, but the mod seemed to disable the in-game overlay too.
I will say, IMO, that is one of the best things I have seen in a long time! :) FDEV, would have been great if this was actually built into the game. I know we've been asking forever. Unrelated: I was on a beach in the south eastern US two weeks ago, and one night we could see mars, Saturn and Jupiter which gave my brain enough data points to be able to orient myself with the orbital plane of our solar system. It was enlightening.
That sounds awesome- I've been able to easily tell planets apart from stars since I've been playing Elite, but never thought to figure out the orbital plane using them.
This is absolutely incredible! Thank you so much for showing how to do this. My goodness, you and the author need to have a tip jar, because this really changes the enjoyment of the game tenfold!!!!! Edit: I just installed this mod, and I am in love with Elite all over again. Now, I can have my cake and eat it too.
having a way to "connect" the software to the game (by reading the log files maybe?) and get color changes depending on the situation would be amazing, if possible. just like someone mentioned in the video, you have your color scheme setup, but you get attacked and some hud elements turn red as a red alert happening. or turn green when auto-landing or other situation, yellow when weapons out, etc..... that would bring a whole new level of immersion to the game for sure.

The very fact this is something that was so easily done (with a script) proves that frontier could've done this officially and sold it for arx, in packs. Suggestions: I'd love to be able to accent things filtered in the navigation panel. I don't mind the orange for the background, but it would be amazing to highlight all of the FC's that show by default with a certain color, all the planetary bases with a different color, and so on, if I wanted. I think this is an amazing addition, especially with cockpit customization. I would love to see this mod allow for each ship to have a different style with colors. That way, I could make each ship manufacturer have slightly varying colors for different hud elements. A color palette for each ship manufacturer, so to speak. Absolutely incredible work, thanks for covering this!
Also.. you are an incredible asset to this game! This is genius and I will be using this! I changed mine with other guides and like you said about the colours, all my targets went green.. even enemies so it was annoying. Thank you 🙏
I started playing yesterday, and sometimes I can't see the HUD at all when the light of an orange star is blinding me. Orange is nice, but it's a bit too much orange, some variety would have been nice.
Really cool but I think I’ll stick with my current mainly cause I like the look of my throttle gauge and such. I’ll look forward to future developments
@@robertpaws just imagine the heavy weight update that would be necessary for that, as well as the insane computer power that you would need, yeah lets ask for FDev to put a CoD Warzone crossover as well, but just think about your computer suffering about it :) If developing games is that easy, then we would have stupidly insane simulators, but no, is a hard path that takes hundreds or thousands of people, so, i'm glad with what we have.

Pffft- you believed ED devs when they said that?! It's a HUD color.... HOW could that be in "everything""? Obviously they are lazy as can be evidenced by the rampant copy/paste jobs for ships and weapons.
@@planexshifter hmmm, I didn't say everything...? It's not tied into planets, vehicles and 'everything'. I believe it's true that they said it's tied in many aspects like I said and agree with you, they were saving themselves work by overhauling the graphical components which many menus are built from. I don't think they're lazy though. As I'm sure you know, it's just dependant on priorities like any tech company. Lastly, for some similarities between some ships, there are many other different ones as well ;).
Be aware that the mod can drop your framerate a bit, perhaps even a noticeable amount. So if your PC is older then you may find it necessary to turn down some gfx settings to compensate.
Could you make a video with the actual number that we need to put in the EDHM UI Portrait fix so we can revert the mess that as allready been made in our file? I cannot find anything about that anywhere and it just suck my soul out of me since it's THE THING that everyone want to fix.

Thanks for the run through of EDHM. I noticed that you have your games on the c drive. Games will perform much better when they are on a different drive than the boot drive. It is also better for the OS.
You can also customise the crosshair color, which is very cool imo. Sadly this mod drops my frames too hard and after a while, my frames permanently get lowered to 30-ish when docked and leaving stations.
Hi CMDR, it will be fixed in the next update. It took a while to figure out what was causing the FPS drops for some CMDRs, and looks like it's the fancy targeting reticle, and the cabin lighting was too complex. So the next update should sort that out

The colour orange is used as it is meant to cause less strain on our eyes especially at night. BMW cars used to use orange as an instrument back light to reduce eye strain from pupil dilation switching from bright instrument background to dark road, or something like that. This has earned a subscribe from a guy that's hard on subsrcibing. Not that your other content was not worth the subscription, it's just that I don't really play ED and even when I did it was occasional and lightweight. I will be coming back, so I like to watch ED related stuff and this one was "gold Jerry, gold" :)
is there anyway to do this if you got the game through epic? I'm able to get to the file but I go through C:\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics. it doesn't seem to work if I do it this way but because I don't have it on steam can someone please help.
Can you tell us the right way to stay interested and motivated to play Elite every day (ish) for years like you? I like the concept of elite and it’s got so much potential, but it just feels so pointless most of the time that I haven’t gone back to it in months.
I dont know i just keep finding new project and new things to do. Elite dose not tell you what to do and where to go. So you have to make your own projects. Maybe look into thargoid combat or something like that.
Ok I'm not Astro, but the way I play is to do different activities, try no to get stuck in the grind, it might also help to role playing, friends help a lot, and take your time, personally I wouldn't rush. With that said I think is normal to have some down time in any game, it happens, when I feel like that I pick up another game, watch a movie or go for a walk, what I'm trying to say is, do not force it or it will just get worst. @@josa310 I would have preferred far less importance being put on multiplayer ( and all the balancing and grinding to keep players going slowly that comes with multiplayer games) and more put on having some actual story and individually crafted places to go and missions to do for example. There is to much content hat is all the same, you can spend days travelling to a new planet or nebula and really they are just different colour versions of the same thing if you are lucky, there is no urge to go and explore after a while because you never find anything exciting.

I bought it through Steam and have always ran it through Steam. Do you know if I'm able to re download it or even re buy it via Frontier direct and log back in to my game?
As a relatively new player to elite, I was wondering why fdev did not use different UI colors depending on the ship or manufacturer. It seems like like a missed opportunity.
For anyone on steam who does NOT have the standard file in the default directory. Use the override file in: AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics You will need tomake it look like this:

Same as the comment below! It is ridiculous how they don’t have a built in colour change! Or the fact you go into different ships and the huds are the exact same and not even fitted to the ships console area. They just float in the same place no matter what ship you have which is rubbish! If I go from a sidewinder to an anaconda I want my hud and everything to look like it’s worth 150mil rather than like I am flying the same ship the whole time
FD should look at employing these people, as well as many other 3rd party developers,, or at least contracting to them ,, seems like many of the mods coming out are very practical and useful to many game players
Not sure if you are still seeing comments from this video, but if you are is it possible to change the hotkeys for the color swaps? I play with a VR headset and a flight stick, but just my keyboard at my left hand for most key functions. (Throttle is scroll wheel) Can I move the functions to F5+? Appreciate the video
Not bad but there must be more options, there is no way to change the ugly blue/pink/purple parts of the HUD which are more important than the options available.
I can understand that there is some technical issuses that keeps fdev from putting that option in. Especially for console players. But come on it can't be any harder then creating a program that makes stars and planets from real scientific data. I'm thinking it might be a little easier just saying.
Oh this is cool, but how does this work with say Voice attack that uses like most of the key binds on the keyboard? Is there a toggle to disable its key bonds so they don’t conflict or something?
Is there a way to dim out or disable that terrible proximity warning lamps that blink like crazy when i go mining or just having an idle limpet outside the ship? I cant imagine what vr headset users feel from them. Just a damn epilepsy trigger.
This mod broke my ability to exit from the first planet I tried leaving. The frame shift drive powered up, when it reached 0 on the count down it sounded like I was moving but none of my panels would appear and the timer didn't leave the OSD. I believe I WAS leaving the planet but I had no controls over anything, not even the ESC key. Had to force shut down the game and remove the files. I would have loved this to have worked but alas....
If only there was a way to fix this on console so we can all have not only proper and fair customization but also helps for people who are colorblind or color sensitive

Great vid. One thing I'd love to see for VR is the side hud panels to be lower so when your trying to look out the windows they don't keep popping up
I've set a button on my hotas to turn them off, very annoying when you're trying to line up a planetary landing.
You can turn off that panel popup feature in the settings. I hated it in VR too!

They really need to make this in game. The orange hurts my eyes after a few hours. Some ships are a bit too bright.

Downloaded the new version, can't figure out how to make it work. I'm not seeing the same files shown on the video.

I noticed that you have your games on the c drive. Games will perform much better when they are on a different drive than the boot drive. It is also better for the OS.
It a NVME ssd. That's not the bottleneck
Actually having you're heavy running games on the same ssd as your boot drive increases speeds

You can also customise the crosshair color, which is very cool imo.
Sadly this mod drops my frames too hard and after a while, my frames permanently get lowered to 30-ish when docked and leaving stations.
Hi CMDR, it will be fixed in the next update. It took a while to figure out what was causing the FPS drops for some CMDRs, and looks like it's the fancy targeting reticle, and the cabin lighting was too complex. So the next update should sort that out

2) Realise you can't change HUD colours.

I can't tell you how many hours I have into customizing the colors of the HUD to try to make it look sharper in VR.
The colour orange is used as it is meant to cause less strain on our eyes especially at night. BMW cars used to use orange as an instrument back light to reduce eye strain from pupil dilation switching from bright instrument background to dark road, or something like that. Whether this is still true or not might be up for debate.
"Heilmer told me that BMW's characteristic orange-red hue is generated by light at a wavelength of 605 nanometers. The color was chosen to allow the driver to clearly see the instrument cluster, but also to be able to adjust to the darkness outside the vehicle quickly after looking up. The eye doesn't tire as quickly trying to read gauges illuminated with red-orange light, he said. BMW discovered this in the 1970s, and it's been both an aesthetic trademark and a conscious ergonomic decision ever since. "
that is true, but this is a game and id like to change my colour, im not driving a car right now.
This has earned a subscribe from a guy that's hard on subsrcibing. Not that your other content was not worth the subscription, it's just that I don't really play ED and even when I did it was occasional and lightweight. I will be coming back, so I like to watch ED related stuff and this one was "gold Jerry, gold" :)

is there anyway to do this if you got the game through epic? I'm able to get to the file but I go through C:\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics. it doesn't seem to work if I do it this way but because I don't have it on steam can someone please help.

Can you tell us the right way to stay interested and motivated to play Elite every day (ish) for years like you?
I like the concept of elite and it’s got so much potential, but it just feels so pointless most of the time that I haven’t gone back to it in months.
Adding a FPS component isn't going to fix it either, at least not for those who wanted a modern Elite game.
I dont know i just keep finding new project and new things to do. Elite dose not tell you what to do and where to go. So you have to make your own projects. Maybe look into thargoid combat or something like that.
Ok I'm not Astro, but the way I play is to do different activities, try no to get stuck in the grind, it might also help to role playing, friends help a lot, and take your time, personally I wouldn't rush. With that said I think is normal to have some down time in any game, it happens, when I feel like that I pick up another game, watch a movie or go for a walk, what I'm trying to say is, do not force it or it will just get worst. @@josa310 I would have preferred far less importance being put on multiplayer ( and all the balancing and grinding to keep players going slowly that comes with multiplayer games) and more put on having some actual story and individually crafted places to go and missions to do for example.
There is to much content hat is all the same, you can spend days travelling to a new planet or nebula and really they are just different colour versions of the same thing if you are lucky, there is no urge to go and explore after a while because you never find anything exciting.

As a relatively new player to elite, I was wondering why fdev did not use different UI colors depending on the ship or manufacturer. It seems like like a missed opportunity.
For anyone on steam who does NOT have the standard file in the default directory. Use the override file in: AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics
You will need tomake it look like this:

Or the fact you go into different ships and the huds are the exact same and not even fitted to the ships console area. They just float in the same place no matter what ship you have which is rubbish!
If I go from a sidewinder to an anaconda I want my hud and everything to look like it’s worth 150mil rather than like I am flying the same ship the whole time

Don't forget to change/remove the Graphics Override XML file if it changes the UI color
Very new to the game here. I can't find where to change the colours for 1,2,3,4 menu keys. They stay purple no matter what I change.

Screwing up the rest of the UI is the biggest reason I haven't changed HUD colors. I'm doing this forthwith.
FD should look at employing these people, as well as many other 3rd party developers,, or at least contracting to them ,, seems like many of the mods coming out are very practical and useful to many game players
I find it very difficult to understand how there is not an in game slider to adjust the color. It doesn't seem like a difficult thing to implement.

can't find the flounder for the game on windows 11

Works well on HOrizons. Doesnt seem to work in Odyssey. Hope there will be an update to this
Not sure if you are still seeing comments from this video, but if you are is it possible to change the hotkeys for the color swaps? I play with a VR headset and a flight stick, but just my keyboard at my left hand for most key functions. (Throttle is scroll wheel) Can I move the functions to F5+? Appreciate the video
Not bad but there must be more options, there is no way to change the ugly blue/pink/purple parts of the HUD which are more important than the options available.

Why are the T and E rendered on top of the UI? That would annoy the hell out of me...

It is in beta, but what is already there is extremely cool!!
I can understand that there is some technical issuses that keeps fdev from putting that option in. Especially for console players. But come on it can't be any harder then creating a program that makes stars and planets from real scientific data. I'm thinking it might be a little easier just saying.
Hopefully this will become a standard process in the Odyssey update...
with this mod i had damn frame drops, from 100 fps down to 30 for a second all 5-10 seconds. Thats too hard for me^^ But nice work!
Oh this is cool, but how does this work with say Voice attack that uses like most of the key binds on the keyboard? Is there a toggle to disable its key bonds so they don’t conflict or something?
for the hud colors i change them with edfx enhancements for ED
Is there a way to dim out or disable that terrible proximity warning lamps that blink like crazy when i go mining or just having an idle limpet outside the ship? I cant imagine what vr headset users feel from them. Just a damn epilepsy trigger.
Hi CMDR, the red blinking lights are disabled in the mod. But I can't disable the blinking cabin lights as they're part of the game code
This mod broke my ability to exit from the first planet I tried leaving. The frame shift drive powered up, when it reached 0 on the count down it sounded like I was moving but none of my panels would appear and the timer didn't leave the OSD. I believe I WAS leaving the planet but I had no controls over anything, not even the ESC key. Had to force shut down the game and remove the files. I would have loved this to have worked but alas....
If only there was a way to fix this on console so we can all have not only proper and fair customization but also helps for people who are colorblind or color sensitive
