I have several magazines and a couple of books detailing exhaustive history about GL and I often rely on that when I speak about the show...specifically about stories that happened before I was even born. The "50th" and "60th" anniversary books help refresh my memory of the early 1980's and taught me about the character's and their involvement on the show...so that when I go to write commentary it's like I've watched those 1970's episodes first-hand...and I have, several, thanks to this site.
...(cont) year where they started saving the tapes consistently. I believe a few tapes from prior survived here and there , which are mostly the ones I guess that are surfacing on You Tube. I remember watching ALL the CBS soaps with my grandmother as a kid in the 1960s (GL, ATWT, Search for Tomorrow, The Edge of Night, etc.). So sad that after GL is canceled, ATWT will be the only one left.
I believe there were a number of shows recorded off of kinescope from that time (which would account for the less than perfect quality). GL was broadcast live 'til around 1968 or so (around the time it expanded from 15 min to a half-hour), and then it switched to tape, but even then, the tapes were usually weren't saved, they were taped over to save money. (Back then no one would have imagined anyone would want to go back and watch these shows thirty-odd years later.) I believe 1978 was the..
Ed'd comment that he didn't know why his father returned to Sprinfield when he did, but he "brought Hillary with him" was inaccurate. It was Hillary who came to Springfield, when she accepted a nursing internshbip at Cedars. Bill Bauer returned to Sprinfield because Hillary was there.
how are people on You Tube uploading those 1950's and 1960's episodes if the tapes weren't saved? I've wondered how so many things long believed out of print and long before VCR's were common appear so frequently on this site. I was watching some 1960's scenes with Bill Bauer, Ben Scott, and others...the quality was not great but it wasn't unwatchable. I have the two VHS videos that P&G released. "Roger: The Scandal Years" and the "Reva" video...I bought them on-line.
I think it had to do with contracts. It would have been good with Peter Simon as Ed Bauer but Richard Van Vleet's delivery is good. Another thing about the Mike Bauer character is, i think, because the viewers GL had gained in the early '80s perhaps weren't as familiar with Mike!? Lots of speculation as to why the character wasn't brought in for the funeral.
the 1980's...escapism...and the Dallas and Dynasty craze...big money...oil. It trickled down on GL with the Lewis family and the Spauldings, too...but the oil references I say was lifted directly from Dallas and Dynasty and Billy was a J.R. and H.B was Jock and Josh, the blacksheep, was Gary. Reva, Trish, and Vanessa could be seen as combination's of Val, Pam, and Sue Ellen. I don't think the Spaulding wealth was heavily emphasized until the 1980's...reflecting the times of big money escapism.
Yes, this was the sad time where they pushed the Bauer family out as the central family on GL. Charita Bauer passed away (they had no control over that, obviously, but the "heart" of GL died along with her); writing out Mike and de-emphasizing Ed was bad enough, but killing off Hillary was an incredibly stupid move. Not sure why they did it. Even if they needed to recast, the character was a Bauer, and could have gone on to be a central character, with ties to Ed, Mike, Bill and even Bert...
it's hard to tell...but probably in Ed's mind Hillary arrived at the same time as Bill...I don't know if Ed and Hillary had many scenes together prior to Bill showing up alive? Anyway, viewers at that time perhaps weren't as caught up on the actual events of the time-line and given that it's a funeral scene, their minds really aren't on the accuracy of the eulogy.
well, i'm familiar by association and by being somewhat a student of the show...I don't know every little thing about it but I think I know the basic's from specific points in the program...and when I started researching the show for my own entertainment years ago I became fascinated by these characters: Ed, Mike, Bill Bauer, Roger, Ross, and Alan Spaulding. Now, that doesn't mean I don't know much about other characters or like other's but those ones were ones I preferred to watch.
That's a good analogy. And if GL during the '80s was "Dallas" and "Dynasty", I guess you could liken it to "Knots Landing" during the '70s (more character-driven, domestic).
Perhaps you're right about viewers not caring as much about the accuracy, but Ed and Hilary actually did have a good deal of interaction early on. Rita Stapleton, Ed's then fiance (and later wife) became something of a mother hen to Hilary shortly after her arrival (when Hilary's appendix burst, Rita was the one who took care of her, since she had no family in town), so Ed certainly interacted with Hilary through Rita...anyway, nice to encounter someone familiar with 1970s-80s GL as I am.
You must be an older fan...I was born in 1976 and so I was raised during the Peter Simon era but Martin was fantastic, too, in the scenes that I've seen...but nope, for me, the only Ed is Peter Simon.
Yes, I think they began phasing Mike out in the early '80s, so by the time he was written out, he'd become a much less central character than he had alway been previously....as for Ed, Mart Hulswit is the only Ed Bauer, as far as I'm concerned..the others are just cheap impostes.
I've watched that clip many times as I'm a big Hillary and Jim fan, but never realized Jim joined them at the end. Was so mad when they killed her off. Wish I knew why. Are there scenes of the bombing and surgery out there somewhere. Believe it or not I have it on audio - I was 11yrs old at the time it was the only way for me to tape it :D
...(who had become almost like another mother to her), she could have given birth to a whole new generation of Bauers, which, IMO, wold have been preferable to turning GL into "The Lewses and Coopers Show".
Well you've obviously done your homework, you know a great deal about even the stuff that happened before you were born. . If you could have seen the show during the drama of all the Roger-Rita-Ed-Holly business (1975 - 80), you probably would have really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, most of the pre-1978 tapes weren't saved.
Sad this character was killed. She had potential.

i attended a funeral today for some friends and came home and thought of this clip.Sorry, but it heals you when you hurt.

Mar Thivierge And it followed soon after. I loved & grew up with these soaps as well. I hope your light is still shining.
true that
That was a tremendously written and acted eulogy...one of the best I can remember. I don't remember Floyd as a singer though.
That wasn't until 1985.

Ellen Dolan as Maureen :) I miss those days of GL!!

Mike Bauer should have been there as well as Floyd's sister, Katie. Hillary and Katie were good friends who worked at Cedars Hospital.

This was Chuck Tyler on All My Children.
THERE IS NO WAY KATIE WOULD NOT BE AT HER BEST FRIENDS SERVICE.
Mike Bauer was written out at the same time Hillary Bauer was killed by Susan Piper. Bert Bauer disappeared shortly after these scenes.
was sad when she died i think this was september 1984 i was 12 yrs old

I loved Hillary!
Wow..Floyd and Nola..they married in real life, I think..since divorced..

@eric9590 But they seem to do it all the time on Soaps.

@kp710 He wasn't the first Ed but I think you mean Mart Hulswit.

Yes, I am several years older than you (we won't say how many :-)

I liked the original, original Ed the best. I don't remember his name, but he had a chubby face...
