    What substrate is in your bags. I have some healthy mycelium of Blue Oyster mushrooms in a small bag growing on millet seeds, ready to transfer to a large tub with a wet puppy pad inside and a heat mat. Is Chopped straw okay if I pasteurise it?

      In my video there is a photo with a straw substrate and a sunflower husk substrate. Chopped straw can be pasteurized in hot water. The water must be at least 80 degrees Celsius. There will be a video about this on June 16th.
      If you are making just a few small bags, you can take a large container, put straw in it and pour hot water, after 1 hour, drain the water to remove all the dirt and dust, pour hot water into the straw again, and leave for 2- 3 hours. Then drain the water, cool and mix with grain spawn

      @@veshenka_expert_info Thanks for your reply. You have some great mushroom growth and information. I had poured a jug of boiling water on some of my chopped straw and put the lid on and left it wrapped in a blanket overnight. I do this with coco coir and vermiculite mix to pasteurise it. I tried this on some other mushrooms with some success in the past, some got contaminated. I am learning and built a small flow hood with Hepa filter and four computer fans with speed controller. I put some of my new Blue Pearl Oyster grain spawn on an agar plate and in sterilised brown rice pressure cooked jars. The jars are already colonising heavily in just a few days. The agar plate has spread across half the petri dish. The mycelium is colonising the straw in my bag. They are currently in a steel locker cupboard with a heat pad on the shelf below them. The growth rate of this Blue Pearl Oyster Mycelium I purchased is extremely healthy and fast. I saw a video for small grows of high humidity loving mushrooms, such as oysters and dung loving species. he placed a jar of water with an airstone in the jar from a small aquarium pump. The setup was then place in the larger tub. The water filters the air for FAE and also creates a fine high humidity mist in the tub with lid. There were some holes in the tub for FAE. I might give this method a go. In the past a fanned the mycelium at fruiting stage and misted with a fine sprayer several times a day.🍄

      UA-cam did not inform me about your answer, I saw it only now. I wonder how much vermiculite you add? And for what? To maintain humidity or does the mycelium grow faster with it?

    Some mushroom farmers use tall plastic bags which they pierce with about 3 cm diameter holes, after they fill them up tightly with substrate and spawn. They are then incubated at a high temperature but astonishingly, no green or black mold contaminate the bags. How is this possible? I am baffled. Please explain.

      you write "some farmers", but in many countries, mine included, this is the standard, everyone does it. there is no mold because the raw materials are pasteurized with steam or hot water. some farmers sterilize in an autoclave. however, mold appears when the pasteurization process is disturbed. therefore, it is important to follow a certain pasteurization technique.

      oh, I also thought - maybe you meant that the mold appears in the holes themselves? if so, it depends on whether there are mold spores in the incubator. It is necessary to treat the premises for cultivation with chemicals.

      One of the largest mushroom farmers in North America (Just type Southwest Mushrooms in the UA-cam search box) grows various mushroom species in large grow bags with just one air filter patch at the top. I honestly don’t know how he manages to have fully colonized grow bags. the only difference I can think of is that I used coffee grounds with some pasteurized chopped straw whereas he uses I believe the Masters’ mix of hardwood pellets and soyhull pellets. but how could a different substrate prevent air from reaching the bottom of a grow bag? I cannot understand this.
      I did not mean that any mold appears in the holes at all.
      If I had a shed of 2 cubic metres and I used it as a fruiting chamber, can you tell me how much air in the shed should be extracted per minute and how often during the day or night? Thank you.
