Now this is the way to do a video ..... No 2 minute music intro's, no history lessons ...... Just straight to the point with some really great information! WELL DONE!!
It's true that a short time video is good, but lots of important details were left out, watering the plant, sun or shade, away from other plants, pesticide attacks, when you pruned plants they suffer so you need to know what to do, it's not that simple.
This is definitely one of the best gardening/landscaping channels out there. They don’t waste your time with excess talking, and have a real love for the subject. All of their hints, tips, and lessons have been aces! As always, thank you!
I stumbled on this video, but I’m glad I did. No click bait, not drama, no superfluous stories of the fist time you ate basil as a kid, etc. It was PERFECT! Clear, concise, informative..and it made me smile at the end. Really though - we’ll done! Time to subscribe.
This was really helpful because I wanted to know if I could take a ton of basil off! And after I saw what you were left with, I realized I can take it down a lot! Thank you
My late mother loved basil and she would have about thirty to forty pots of basil! She was born and raised in Greece where the basil plant is apart of our religion. We grow the “Greek” basil, the one with the small leaves! My father would cut a sprig of basil and wear it on his ear! Basil has been a part of my life since childhood. I love it! 🌿🍃🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷
As a newbie gardener I have found your videos very informative and easy to follow. No useless fluff, just quality information that is practice and enjoyable to watch (and easy to retain), thank you so much, I am so happy to have found you. Cheers and Happy Gardening!
Hi Laura. My husband Phil and I watch your videos every week. We always watch for Russel to photo bomb you! Too Cute! When you answer your mail, I do think people get way to personal and ask questions that have nothing to do with gardening. But you have a sweet spirit and answer them anyway. We love you and wish you the best in developing your new plot of land.
It took me a while to realize the first leaves where seedling leaves and not true leaves. Thank goodness for people like you. Thanks for everything you do. ;). Excited to be growing cardinal Basil from seed this year. I hope your year is full of blessings from God. hugs- from my whole family!
Omg! You look the same in your current videos and are a natural with all this information and tips. I see a sparkle of Benjamin and Samantha Grace in your eye. How thing change and you bring joy playing in the dirt.
I have grown basil for a few years now and I did not know to prune them. Guess that's why mine was always leggy!!! I did cut the blooms off but never pruned them back. I will be doing this the correct way this year. I learn so much from ALL your videos. Thanks so much for sharing your wealth of knowledge. I appreciate all of your videos. Love how you do your flower arrangements. Keep up the great tutorials. 😋😋😋
Thanks for this video. my youngest daughter brought home basil she started at school, and we're growing it indoors. I didn't know that I should be pruning it so I'm glad I found this.
This is the first video that has mentioned pruning them after so many leaf sets, this seems like important information. Every other video I have watched was all, just pinch off the new leaves or went straight to the flowering stage. Thank you!
Would love if you could post a whole video on how to prune several different herbs. Like Mint, Parsley, Oregano, and Rosemary. Would be a great video!!
I would love to see this. I’ve been gardening for years but believe it or not, have NEVER grown any herbs other than mint and I grew those to simply cover a patch of bare land, not for food.
After watching your video, I went straight to my five-year-old basil plant. And yes, just like you said, it was very spindly with lots of flowers. I say "was" because I immediately pruned the poor old thing following your directions. Thanks for the basil-pruning video. It is informative - I didn't know one should prune basil - and easy to follow. And yes, I subscribed.
I just bought a basil from Ralphs. It's called a living plant because it's potted and growing so one can grow their own basil in the kitchen. I have wanted to buy one for weeks now, and I finally bought one.It looks so full, healthy and beautiful. I'm so excited to grow it. I had remembered you made this video so thanks so much for making this great video.
Hi, I just got a plant from the store. I am wondering if I am just to take the little ones from the root and leave the big ones so that they get optimal growth? Thanks!
Ive come here every year since you posted this video. I seem to forget all the Basil Pruning rules after a Canadian winter. Thanks for this short but informative video
Does basil like to be dry? I was watering too much and leaves turned yellow. Now I have the basil plant under a covered sunny porch and am trying not to water too much. Leaves aren’t yellow anymore but they are kind of small. I’m in Florida, not having too much luck in the heat. What’s the best way to keep basil alive? Thank you markm
Thank you for this! I used to prune properly and stopped growing basil for a few years. I'd completely forgotten and was taking individual leaves. Having just planted a couple of new plants for the season, this is perfect timing :)
I was always told to prune by taking individual leaves (the biggest) and snip it off at the stem. I usually snip 5-10 leaves at a time. I’m wondering if this is ok for when you want to use it for an individual dish but do the full pruning 1x/week (I believe that’s what she said) for growth and health? I’m kind of confused.
Well done on your video. I'm glad you explained that if you don't prune your basil, it becomes bitter and mild in flavour. That was great information of which I was not aware.
Ok great! And where do I do the second pruning and the third? I mean after the new branches have emerged. Do I cut on the same central stem or on the new stems that have grown and I leave a set of leaves on that new stems? Thanks!
You did a great job in explaining how to prune basil! I grew a plant from seed and obviously didn't do it right because it just stopped producing leaves. I know now that I didn't let it mature long enough before I started taking leaves from it. I just grew a new one and now that I've seen your video, I know I'm going to have a big, lush plant in no time! Thanks again for the great instruction!
So hard to pick just one .. but I’m gonna call it early #10 that Persian shield is a show stopper and companion plants are amazing then any of the gara pots 🎉
Hi there, this is probably a stupid question, but can you use the leaves that were harvested but in flower bud, can you use these to cook with as well?
This was super helpful! I just recently started to care for my own basil plants recently and pruned them back about a week ago. I was wondering how often I should and how far back I can get away with pruning and you answered my questions wonderfully. Thank you!
Thanks dear, very helpful. Quick tip now, if you take that fresh bunch of basil you just harvested and put it in a glass of water it will stay fresh for months until you are using it, and if you can't use it all, it grows roots in the glass and you can plant it again in a new pot! Amazing plant! I use it in soups, salads, pesto, pizza etc...
Hello everyone. Since basil is found at every household in India, I would like to suggest ways to get a healthy growth of plant. 1) add 20-25% old cowdung compost or vermi compost while preparing soil. Garden soil must be 40% and rest any kind of fine sand (either river or construction). 2) add 1 TSP of Epsom salt every month after the plant grows to 1 feet height and develops strong roots. 3) add few grains of DAP only once or twice a year (optional). 4) cut the seed holders whenever you see them growing on its top. 5) Water only when the top soil becomes dry, that too in 2-3 days. Though misting the leaves and stems helps in good growth. 6) keep the plant whole day in the sun once the plant grows to suitable size.
I’ve been pruning my plant and now have two stems from each of the original stems, and my plant is starting to bolt. Do I trim below two sets of leaves on each of the two newer stems, or trim below the original cut (on the original stems) just above a set of leaves?
I really appreciate this video. You're very straightforward, knowledgeable, and the video is very clear and I was able to actually see everything that you did. Thank you.
I'm just now starting to grow my own herbs and this was so VERY helpful to know. I grow my own veggies and have for a long time and they are always amazing. I use a lot of store bought herbs, and growing them, I feel are a lot better, healthier and rewarding. So here's to a good variety of herbs. Thumbs up :)
I found basil does well with cucumber but it goes to see very fast if not picked basically everyday. My zone is great for growth, but that means much more care is needed. My pepper plants have 100’s on them. Best to spend a summer allowing them to grow and then flower. The wait is worth it, from zone 10b in California.
I am growing basil from seed for the first time. I have been watching Laura and family for 4 years! So helpful that this video popped up unexpectedly. Thank you!
Great video! Your deliver of the information is clear and easy to understand. Can't wait to get working on my basil plants. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
I just found this site and LOVE it! This girl is so cute and natural and knowledgeable, but it's the way she shows you how to do things - very simply! Plus, I love that she didn't edit herself when she asked viewers to give a thumbs up but made a thumbs down sign! All of her videos are terrific!
I enjoyed your video it was just what I was looking for. I live in Montana . So i will be growing my basil in side this winter . I just needed a little help.so thank you. Keep doing new videos you do a great JOB!!
Make sure it has lots of light. And do not overwater. Most herbs like to be on the dry side. Indoors you won’t have the same light, therefore it will need less water. Plant light for extra light?
I grow a lot in my garden and harveat to sell at a local pizzeria. I usual grab it with my hand and chop it in half. It always comes back and ready for more the next week! Love the stuff!
It's great to show people how to grow basil for eating, etc, but you should also tell them about the benefits of leaving the plants to seed because our bees just love the flower! I always share my plants with those beneficial insects like BEES! We would not exist without them!! Love you and your videos!
My basil never grew well until this year when I put 3 seedlings (from expired seed) in a 7 gallon grow bag. Knew i needed to pinch flowers and the plants and leaves look great so I wasn't sure what to do. Thanks for the tips. I put trimmings in my shirt pocket as I love the smell! Refreshing infused in water with cucumber.
Right along with everyone else, I loved this video! You are so pleasant to watch. I wasn't actually looking for this, but I am so happy I watched. I LOVE having fresh basil on hand, however, I don't really know how to care for it. I am 65 and my family is down to my adult son and myself. I purchased a basil plant from a grocery store, didn't know anything about it (of course, it came with ZERO info and instructions), and it was dead within a few months! Well, I did learn a little today so maybe if I can ever find another plant, I'll give it a go! Thanks so much...
Love the vid, subscribed and will be watching more. I've been struggling as a first time basil grower up until a few days ago when I took a neighbors advice and re-potted into bigger pots and my almost dead basil has rewarded me like I never thought possible in a very short period of time. Thanks for the tips on pruning, I'm going out right now to prune mine and make me some of my awesome basil pesto ;)
Thanks! Two weeks ago, I bought a basil plant on a whim while shopping for tomatoes at a vegetable stand. (It was about the same price as the packaged herbs in the grocery store.) unknowingly, I was just picking leaves off it as I was preparing meals and it is not doing well. Now I know better. I’ll get it properly planted and start harvesting the leaves weekly. Yay, Garden Answer!
I had a huge plant...didnt really know how to harvest the leaves and then the white blooms started... so i figured it was more plant growing.. lol... so thank you for the tips... I immediately went outside and chopped off the blooms..now to harvest all these leaves... thanks again
Love your videos! So helpful I’ve been wondering why I can’t seem to get my basil right. This was very helpful and you’re adorable! Had me literally lol’ing at the end.
I'm confused what the difference between pruning and harvesting is and also when it flowers are you saying to cut the whole section and throw it away? Does it just "ruin" the flavor of those leaves directly around the flower? Or can you just pinch off the actual flower? Confused! Thanks!
1. Best to not let it flower. If you do you can cut the stem pretty far down and throw that which you cut away. It won’t taste good. Since each stalk is a separate plant, it should not affect the other stalks, unless of course they have flowered too 2. Harvesting is the same as pruning . You can take a little or a lot. Just try to sever the stem a bit above the leaves you will be leaving.
Thanks for this great video. I have resourced it several times. I am growing basil from seed and have only one plant in a 5 inch pot. Maybe I should have grown more plants as you show. But today I am doing the first pruning 🙂.
Never a thumbs down!...lol....LOVE basil! I have a store bought plant a seed plant...i love them the same! 😊 thanks for this video, always so helpful... looks like I'm doing it right too...lol
***** Thanks for watching, Jules! I can't believe I did the thumbs down instead of thumbs up! Haha! Oh well! ;) It probably won't be the last time... ~Laura
Already subscribed! Very informative content! Specially to peeps like me who’s starting to grow herbs and spices in our garden. Thank you! More vids about herbs please. Kudos! :)
my young basil plants are always so dark green with big roundish leaves. The older plants tend to get kind of yellowish with pointy leaves. Even if I prune it does this. How can I prevent it?
I like to leave a few flowers on my ground basils so I can reseed the next year, as the winter kills the plant off so I have to replant year over year. 🙂
Very helpful. I've grown basil for years but haven't ever been able to catch up with it. Thanks for the tips on why you should prune and not let it get to the flower stage. Totally agree. Hopefully now I will stay in front of the pruning.
I've been wanting a system like this for a while. Tried to build a similar system years ago to keep the squirrels from eating my strawberries but could not master engineer the watering system. It was great to have a step by step demonstration. Great job, Laura... thanks so much.
I really like LIME basil, it really has a great flavor. Cinnamon basil goes well in a salad, just clip a few leaves when trimming lettuce. About pruning pepper plants, I did that last year and drastic pruning forces the plant to bush out. Just topping the plant does not have the same results.
Lynni is right, you can't prune coriander... but what you can do - start a new batch of seeds every few weeks. So, when one batch grows, flowers and turns to seed, you have another one ready and waiting to use as an herb.
Your videos are great . So easy to understand . I’ve only got into gardening in the last week and you have helped so much . Thankyou love from Scotland 🏴
Very helpful! I went right outside and pruned my young Basil plant. The information you gave about flowers on a Basil plant was very helpful. I didn’t know that. Thank you for taking your time to do these videos to help us!💖
This was so helpful! But my plant already has seeds for some weeks, if I go ahead and prune it, will the taste of it change from bitter to how it was before?
Ack! Earlier today I was admiring the pretty basil blooms bc I’ve never seen them before (it’s my first time growing basil), but now I’ll have to snip them all off tomorrow! I might also taste them to see how the flavour changed lol. Thank you for the video, it was super helpful!!
Glad I watched this video. I always plant some basil, cut some when I need it and watch it grow crazy with little leaves. Nice to know that pruning keeps it healthy and the leave bigger and useful.
Are you fertilizing it? You MIGHT be giving it too much nitrogen, if it's growing like crazy... Does it have a lot of flavor? If not, like I said, ya might wanna cut back on the nitrogen.
@@NC-qc7wd Because this is a pruning video, not an after-pruning care video. It is that simple.

Yeah, and she wasn't trying to sell anything which is a nice change.
Exactly!
This comment is EXACTLY how I feel as well! Nicely done and as you said, "time to subscribe"!! :)
Agreed. Ditto. Just found. Glad I did. Subscribed. 🌺
Thank you! Exactly. I don’t want to know about how your oldest child tripped in a field of basil or whatever.
This was really helpful because I wanted to know if I could take a ton of basil off! And after I saw what you were left with, I realized I can take it down a lot! Thank you
Best video I’ve seen on pruning. Other ones aren’t as clear.
Thanks for the tip. I planted basil this year again, I have not been successful growing basil, and I love to use basil in my dishes.
My late mother loved basil and she would have about thirty to forty pots of basil! She was born and raised in Greece where the basil plant is apart of our religion. Could someone tell me if I should tear off dead or dying leaves.
As a newbie gardener I have found your videos very informative and easy to follow. No useless fluff, just quality information that is practice and enjoyable to watch (and easy to retain), thank you so much, I am so happy to have found you. Cheers and Happy Gardening!

Same here!
Thanks for this video. my youngest daughter brought home basil she started at school, and we're growing it indoors. I didn't know that I should be pruning it so I'm glad I found this.
How informative! I’ve grown basil for years, and never knew how to prune it. I used the “guess this is good” approach, but you’ve made it clear.
YES, I agree! I just asked her the same question, if she could do more herb videos. Very helpful.
Dill...I would love to know the proper way to trim or harvest dill!
Rosemary is easy, best to prune right before the growing season, and take five inches off any leads, grows like a beast,
I would love to see this. I’ve been gardening for years but believe it or not, have NEVER grown any herbs other than mint and I grew those to simply cover a patch of bare land, not for food.
Yes I would also!
After watching your video, I went straight to my five-year-old basil plant. And yes, just like you said, it was very spindly with lots of flowers. Do they get roots and can replant if you put cuttings in water ?❤
I had no idea you were even supposed to prune basil. Thanks for the information! 🌿
I didn't either and every year my basil looks horrible. I almost didn't buy any this year but glad I did, I just went out and trimmed it!
I have a feeling this is why my basil has died TWICE. Next time I will make sure to prune it when necessary!

Can I pinch of leaves from the bottom half of the plant for use as well? Or should I leave them alone?

Love your videos! So helpful I’ve been wondering why I can’t seem to get my basil right. This was very helpful and you’re adorable! Had me literally lol’ing at the end.
thank you for sharing...do you remove the blooms before cooking the basil leaves? also, can you use the stems or only the leaves?
This video was very helpful, thanks again for the tips
You moist have read my mind! Just planted 2 new basil plants this past weekend... now I know what to do hooray!!! Thank you!!
it would be awesome if you could do a video about indoor herbs
Thanks I was just wondering how today . Thank you.
She does!
Maybe get an AeroGarden.
Marijuana is an herb 😗
What do you do with the 'blooms', once you've cut them off? Can they be used, or just thrown away?
I'm confused what the difference between pruning and harvesting is and also when it flowers are you saying to cut the whole section and throw it away? Does it just "ruin" the flavor of those leaves directly around the flower? Or can you just pinch off the actual flower? Confused! Thanks!
1. Best to not let it flower. If you do you can cut the stem pretty far down and throw that which you cut away. It won’t taste good. Since each stalk is a separate plant, it should not affect the other stalks, unless of course they have flowered too
~Laura
Lol....looks like you were trying to say, "give a thumbs up down below"...or something like that....but you always deserve a thumbs up girl!!😉
very concise and answered all the questions i had about pruning basil. TWO THUMBS UP!!!!
I liked your presentations...helped me as I am new to herbs growing, thanks ;-)
Thank you. I have never been able to keep my Basil plant thriving so started pruning today and see what will happen and give you an update soon.
I like to leave a few flowers on my ground basils so I can reseed the next year, as the winter kills the plant off so I have to replant year over year. 🙂
good idea!
Great video. I bought a lovely plant today and I've got some pruning to get to...but had no idea what to do. This gave me the info I needed. Thanks.
Basil tea is great. Pour boiling water over fresh leaves. It is a mint!
i smoke basil it is weird?
I just discovered some volunteer basil in one of my potted plants and can now transplant it to a better bucket and start the pruning process.
thanks for saving my plants!
Thanks! You were very helpful and your explanations are great!!! :)
Just bought two basil plants today, now I know how to plant and prune them, as well as harvesting! Love me some basil pesto! TFS!
QUESTION: if the plant already starts to flower, does that change the taste from then on? or can you simply prune the flowers off? Thank you!
I wonder about that too...
Very helpful. I've grown basil for years but haven't ever been able to catch up with it. Thanks for the tips on why you should prune and not let it get to the flower stage. Totally agree. Hopefully now I will stay in front of the pruning.
Hi how are you doing today hope you're having a good time today
Hi how are you doing today hope you're having a good time today
Thanks a nice concise video! Very helpful.
Really lovely video. Wondering if can directly put the cuttings into ground instead of water? I had mixed results with that. Thanks.
Do you have a video on pruning Coriander?
You cant prune coriander. Thats a spice XD. Coriander is cilantro before sprouting, or cilantro seeds. NOt trying to be mean, i was just confused XD
Lynni M. Actually, all of the UK, Europe, Asia, and even Martha Stewart, always use the word corriander for cilantro.
Lynni is right, you can't prune coriander... but what you can do - start a new batch of seeds every few weeks. So, when one batch grows, flowers and turns to seed, you have another one ready and waiting to use as an herb.
Hi Christina how are you doing today hope you're having a wonderful time
Thank You for your detailed way to prune Basil. I just started growing Basil.
I noticed that when i pruned my basil that the second leaves growing away from the main stalk stopped growing. any ideas why that might be?
Be careful not to prune too close to the leaves you are leaving.
Your videos are great . So easy to understand . I’ve only got into gardening in the last week and you have helped so much . Thankyou love from Scotland 🏴
Good to know. I'm glad I watched the video too. It was so helpful.
How are you doing today shamn?

So cute!!! Thanks!!
Yes the look is distracting. I had to rewatch to learn about the basil tips.
Very helpful! I went right outside and pruned my young Basil plant. The information you gave about flowers on a Basil plant was very helpful. I didn’t know that. Thank you for taking your time to do these videos to help us!💖
this was extremely helpful😉
This was so helpful! But my plant already has seeds for some weeks, if I go ahead and prune it, will the taste of it change from bitter to how it was before?
At 4:57 leave a quarter to a half inch = ~5-12 mm.
Ack! Earlier today I was admiring the pretty basil blooms bc I’ve never seen them before (it’s my first time growing basil), but now I’ll have to snip them all off tomorrow! I might also taste them to see how the flavour changed lol. Thank you for the video, it was super helpful!!
I'm curious to know WHY exactly would this video get dislikes?! I mean, you can 'not' like it, but why would anyone DISLIKE it?!
Because there are literally people who dislike videos just to be asses, sadly.
The info might be too much to grasp for some.
UA-cam has bots that do it, depends on an algorythm. Nothing personal but ALL videos get disliked.
Being from Britain I did find the way she says basil a bit annoying. But not enough to dislike it🙂
Because she asked for it. 5:22
