Didn’t see these too often on our now abandoned rail line in Saskatchewan. 85lb rail so they weren’t needed. But, on occasion these would show up instead of the regular locomotives, usually more back in the 80s when they would still spot some boxcars as well as the newer hopper cars. Don’t think I’ve seen any come up here since at least the early 90s.
The video is from 2000. Cabooses (called vans in Canada) were gone from main line trains by that time, but were then and still are used on some locals where the territory requires long shoving moves.
Hey, from 2:37 thru 2:54 it a pretty neat scene where the tracks are actually sitting on top of the station building and seeing the locomotives rolling over it. Seems like Winnipeg is a railfan haven as, from my understanding, there's a huge yard nearby and a multiple mainlines. Is this town worth the visit?
Nice looking machines, CN had always something different on the roster. These GMD-1's look more like the road switcher diesels in Europe, like the Vossloh G1206 and the Belgian class 77. Very similar locomotives have been used here where I live (Netherlands between Maastricht and Aachen) A private coal railway had 6 Henschel Germany built locomotives with 12-567C engines and a very similar body style (only the cabs had slanted roof edges to fit in the loading gauge), pictures can be found with a google search at "staatsmijnen 151-155, or NS 2900)
+dieselmupke Yes, the NS 2900's were mechanically similar (1200 HP V-8 567) to the GMD-1 but physically they were much smaller units, roughly only 2/3 the length of a GMD-1.
Both classes had V12-567C engines, the NS2900 was slightly more powerfull, 1430hp vs 1200hp for the GMD-1. The NS2900 was based on the G12 export model, of which there are 4 left in Europe, one preserved (7707 by GM gruppen Norway) and the other 3 stored at an iron ore mine in Norway at Kirkeness. They are pretty loud beasts. There is no member of the NS2900 preserved. The lenght of the NS2900 was 46'3" (14.1m), the GMD-1 was 54'9" long, roughly 1/5 longer. The adhesive weight was for both pretty the same (GMD-1 A1A-A1Aversion), but total weight for the GMD-1 was some 30 ton more. The GMD-1 is however with no doubt the better looking one of the two.
that 1417 somehow found its way down to Florida, where it works the conrad yelvington Ft. Lauderdale yard now. I know that because......I switch with that engine lol.
Love those GMD1's! I've seen a few here in Winnipeg, and I love it every time!
Great video! I've always loved GMD-1s. In the last two shots, I don't think I've ever seen that many together on one train before.
Wow very cool looking..........I like the high cab and the smoke stacks on these

I can't wait for the Rapido Trains model to come out! These were common on local freights around Moncton NB in the late 90s.
Wow, that has to be some very old video. Even a caboose. But, enjoyable to see for sure.

ACLTony Definitely yes.
Ok, thanks! I had read reports about crime, yet every time I've seen photos of this town it looks relatively clean and peaceful.
ACLTony I never felt unsafe there based on my surroundings or people in the area.
fmnut So you've been to Winnipeg, how cool
@@fmnut is this near Shaw Field?

+dieselmupke sorry I meant V 12. my bad.

PRLX 1417 I'm guessing?
i am a railfanner of winnipeg . and i see them sometimes . nothing special about them, but they`re pretty cool . i guess.
Well they are Canadian made, and only 101 were ever made, most of which are retired and/or scrapped.
+Taylorover9001 I`m pretty sure unit 1413 was sold to the Oregon Pacific RR
Yes, some GMD1's have been sold to other railways. There's even one in Cuba.
Taylorover9001
yeah. I`ve heard there are ex-CN C424`s in Cuba.
Trainboy Productions I wish there was more video from the 1970's/80's of the GMD1's on UA-cam, especially the 1000 series units on 60lb grain branches
