Wonderful music! I also have listened many times and am always moved by the beauty and serenity. This is my favorite of his recordings! I wish that I could have been in that church during the 1960s.
He sure didn't play evensong and benediction at that console! That's Dr. Willan at St. Paul's, Bloor Street, Toronto (a wonderful old Casavant!), but a place that has never had anything remotely like solemn vespers and benediction. Lovely music.
Saint Luke 2:48-49 The text in parenthesis is not sung. 48 Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. 49 And he said to them:How is it that ye sought me? did ye not know, that I must be about my Father’s business?
His music just went PD in some areas, so it's now available on IMSLP. petruccimusiclibrary.ca/files/imglnks/caimg/a/ae/IMSLP560976-PMLP903698-Willan_Magnificat_and_Nunc_dimittis,_Tones_VIII_and_III.pdf
I'm actually Albert's daughter. Have you met my dad before? Would you mind emailing me your contact details? I'd like to chat with you prior to your visiting my dad if you don't mind. Monica.strung@gmail.com. Thanks.
@@monicastrung7956 Joining the conversation! Attended SMM as a child in the early 1940s...I am in contact with Rachel Mahon! My uncle, Charles Densem, was the one designated to be sure that, when Willan retreated to his cabin on Lake Simcoe, he got back ok.....(me, former lay clerk, Grace Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys, San Francisco). Be in touch? is SMM still tops?
This is still the best video on all of UA-cam

So powerful. I have listened to this hundreds of times and am still so moved by it.
A very dear recording to me.
Absolutely beautiful! What a master of the organ.
Sublime and wonderous!
Really nice post, thanks very much.

This is superb; it really captures the spirit and style of old Fashioned (the Good) Anglo-Catholicism.
I feel better... his congregation is even noisier than mine after an evening service.
03:55 (Clink, clink, clink!) Up in smoke!
Related to Martin's question... What is the text for antiphon sung with the Magnificat? I'm afraid I can't quite make out the words.

What setting is this, and can I get a score for it?
Probably Willan's own, composed 1928.

@@CalebSension Thank you
Is that Albert Mahon singing the Antiphon?
bachcollegiumsd Yes it is Albert Mahon.
Wonderful. I have plans to sit down with A. Mahon in a few weeks to talk about his life and time with Willan at SMM.
