  • I visited the Fermoy Viaduct while returning from Cork. I wanted to pop up the dpi phantom 4 drone and get a look around as there was film called blue Max filmed in the area. This drone vlog shows what I got up to the the phantom 4 drone.

  • @DroneWolfMedia
    @DroneWolfMedia 7 років тому +1

    Patrick.... the part where you said, "when will I learn" had me laughing out loud! I apologize, I know it's not funny, but it really was. :) I've had my fair share of crashes and close calls. Only once under a bridge though. I tried flying across and through an old steel covered walkway bridge that goes across this small section of the river downtown last December. I forgot to turn off gps to prevent any compass interference and so halfway across the bridge, my 4 week old P4P started wigging out uncontrollably, and wouldn't respond to any of my stick movements no matter how hard I tried, the sticks just failed to respond and my bird was headed into the side of the bridge, and would have surely fallen overboard to an icy cold watery grave. The only thing that saved me was that I remembered that during instances such as this that you should quickly switch your flight mode on your controller from "P" to "A" and back to "P" again really quickly, and that will reset your wonky compass giving you enough time to correct the problem. Once I regained control, I flipped it into sport mode and high tailed it out from under the bridge. I was too embarrassed at the time to post that video, but being that you were brave enough to post two in the same video, I feel I must now search for that old footage and post it up for the world to see. LOL!
    Love your content Patrick! And I really enjoyed your One on One with Keith last week. (I had mine earlier this week) Your response to "where do you see yourself in 5 years", was similar to mine, including Ken Heron being an inspiration. I still have a ways to go compared to you guys, but we all had to start somewhere right? Thank you so much for being such an inspiration to so many and producing such entertaining content.
    Take care & have a great weekend!
    Chris

      Hi Chris, wow that was quite an interesting dilemma with your drone, definitely worth telling the story in a video and no harm in showing the incident.....we can learn , for example i never new about that sudden reset so we need to get that into a video.....keep up the great content, it takes time to build up i am seeing.....thanks for the comment

    Nice coverage of your crash. I'm surprised that your sensors didn't kick in to stop the forward motion. The sensors on my phantom 4 seem to be overly sensitive. I'm glad that it worked out, I can imagine the sense of panic that you were feeling at the moment you realized that you crashed. You did a great job documenting the ordeal. Like from me.

    Greetings Patrick! I know the feelings you were going through. A few days ago I was out flying my Mavic Pro, trying my Epson Moverio BT-300 glasses for the first time, which I love by the way, they are amazing! Anyway I was flying down the middle of a river sideways, getting a view of the trees on the bank on the opposite side of the river and their reflections. I was so absorbed with the camera view in the heads-up display, that I took my eye off the drone for too long and flew slightly backwards and sideways into a tree. I still had connection to the drone and camera view looking down at two tree trunks and their shadows on the grass. I hiked through the trees along the bank until the real view matched the view I was seeing in my Moverio glass and then saw my back in the camera view as I moved forward. Turning around, there was my Mavic perched on a branch about 10 feet above the ground on a tree branch. I struggled to climb the tree, resulting in some sore back muscles, but managed to retrieve it. I was very lucky, just a couple of chipped props, but other than that not even a scratch on the Mavic. I replaced the props, changed the battery, and took it up in a low hover a few feet above the ground. It seemed to respond well, no warning messages, and gimbal working perfectly. I decided to do another flight which went perfectly, although my heart still thumping from the adrenalin rush. I was so so lucky! A lesson learned that hard way!

    • @PatrickConlon
      @PatrickConlon  6 років тому

      you were lucky, these things happen eh, and i agree the adrenalin rush is mad..........thanks Dave....fingers crossed it doesn't happen again.

    • @davestredulinsky

      Yes, it could have fallen to the ground and broken something, or worse yet, could have fallen off a branch into the river. Hopefully I have learn my lesson.

    Glad you didn't totally wreck the Phantom 4. A little trick I use is to fly very slowly forwards through a gap, making sure everything is good and then once I'm the other side I just reverse straight back. Then it's just a matter of reversing the clip in post if you want the forward view.

    That's a horrible feeling when you crash, but luckily it was a bridge and not a Canadian plane!
    My advice... You can "repair" the drone by pouring Guinness on it. (So I hear.)

    • @PatrickConlon
      @PatrickConlon  6 років тому +1

      Ken love the fact you took a moment to comment thanks a lot..... Yeah no planes thankfully Guinness certainly repaired me if not the drone, no major damage. Keep up the great work....you must be the biggest drone channel by now no?

    Not much of damage.... I've had more damage on my two crushes from much lower height...

    Use the crosshair in the centre of your screen (you might have to setup this point in the DJI app) to maneuver.

    Ah Pat! Was looking good til then. Was it just a bit of wind that send you to the left?
    That bit of plastic on the leg should pop back in. I'd check for micro cracks on the motor mount arms though. Blades are easily enough replaced, as you know.
    Enjoy the Liffey water!

    • @PatrickConlon
      @PatrickConlon  7 років тому

      thanks Rigger, there wasn't much wind just wasn't flying straight i guess....can easily happen. thansk for the comenting, i will check again for other cracks....fingers crossed....

    No offence meant here, but how in. the world could you hit that? lol, I mean there was plenty of room and you kept flying to the left! I'm just glad you got it back without TOO MUCH damage! 😬

    • @PatrickConlon
      @PatrickConlon  7 років тому +1

      i know right...i was looking at the drone from across the river, not the screen and didn't realise i was so close....never can be too careful....but your right not too much damage which was lucky...(no offence taken btw) :-)

    • @malonecustomdesigns
      @malonecustomdesigns 7 років тому

      Yeah, when flying under or through something like that, and you're not directly in front of it or behind it, it can cause issues!

    • @PatrickConlon
      @PatrickConlon  7 років тому

      they are strong drones that's for sure, lucky i had weeds and nettles for it to crash down into so that probably saved it too...thanks for the comment.

  • @droneuk
    @droneuk 7 років тому +2

    Oh gosh that's not good but at the same time it seems it's in good condition after the crash. How come the sensors didn't stop it from hitting though?

    • @PatrickConlon
      @PatrickConlon  7 років тому

      i am not totally sure, i think they may have gone off, i think they did, and i panicked and went forward instead of hovering, i was watching the drone and not the screen.....a bit weird i was starting to get real confident perhaps hat was the problem....
