Hello everyone and welcome back to Brink of Speed.

stores.daggercu...
So, today I will talk about Cylinder Deactivation in the C7 Corvette and how to avoid 2 disasters that this causes. It is definitely what caused my C7 Z06 to have the lifter issues and make me have to get a new engine. This also causes major problems for the A8 transmission with its torque converters. You've probably heard plenty of C7 owners talk about having to get their torque converters replaced either once or a few times, well, cylinder deactivation is responsible for that as well.
Leave me a comment below and let me know if you've experienced either of these 2 disasters. Support this channel by clicking the link below and subscribing!

So, today I will talk about Cylinder Deactivation in the C7 Corvette and how to avoid 2 disasters that this causes. Have a wonderful rest of your week everyone. 😊👍
I have a c7 2017, what mileage did your engine end up failing? I'm creeping up on 25k miles on mine and am going to invest in one of those Range units.
@@hyplerai Right at 11k miles.
Only time a manual C7 kicks into V4 mode is if the drive mode is in Eco. Never put it in eco. It never enters V4. Period.
@@eriklehnsherr5784 Thanks for THAT good news. I have a Manuel C7 Z06 with 36000 miles.
I bought the RANGE AFM Disabler device when my 2016 C7 Z51 had 8255 miles. After 3 years now, it has never gone into V4 mode and I am so glad I bought the device.
The price was $216 then and is about the same today. It is a must buy for the C7. The Chevy Dealer knows about my device and they totally approve of it.
Number one owning a Corvette I could care less what gas mileage I get
red stingray Corvette Exactly 😊
Unfortunately the way to make a corvette that inexpensive is to share parts with the rest of the fleet. You should care about your gas mileage if your own a Corvette. if money isnt an issue, upgrade to a car that doesnt wreck itself by cutting out half of the engine while running at highway speed.
If you get less than 5mpg you would.
It's there so we don't have to pay the gas guzzler tax which is $2500.
So, you COULD care less?
The m7 will not go to v4 mode unless you are in economy mode. It will not drop to v4 in the other modes like the automatics
The 7-speed Manual will only go into Cylinder Deactivation if its in Eco mode.
StreetMods Z06 See, that’s what I thought but then I heard that it happened no matter what mode you’re in. Thank you for the feedback.
Correct my 17 manual only goes into v4 in eco mode
2015 manual, never happens outside of eco mode.
Wrong. Mine goes into eco at low and steady RPM. You can hear it come out of eco when you slightly speed up.
@@davidduhe1657 If you have the 7-speed trans it will only go into v4 when in Eco mode, Wont do it in Turing,Sport,Track mode. If you have the Auto trans then it will go into v4 in any mode when driving easy. You can also pull up the display on the gauge screen that shows when the car is actually in V8 or V4 and verify what the car is really doing while driving.
I had this discussion with a friend a year ago, so we tested it. My 7 speed manual would only go into v4 mode when the Eco mode was selected. All other modes stayed in V8. Since the C8 is a dual clutch, hopefully GM will configure the cylinder deactivation to only work in Eco mode.
John Os Thank you for your feedback and yes, I hope that is the case with the C8.
Go to the Amazon store you will find the gift that will solve the problem, I own a 2015 C7, convertible, auto, and I have had the same problem, now it's over now, the v8 sound is back in the hood 😂😂
2017 C7 Z-51 manual. I keep it in sport 100% of the time. No cylinder deactivation, and it keeps the dual mode exhaust open as well.
I agree, my 2019 Grand Sport 7 speed manual doesn't go into V4 unless I put it in ECO. I was trying to get home from the mountains last summer in ECO mode and when it kicked back into V8 as I transitioned from downhill to uphill it let out a loud CLUNK! I researched it on the owners forum and won't ever use it again.
John Os Same here, only way I ever see v4 is when I’m in Eco. All other modes do NOT enter into that mode on a 2016 z06 manual
So tired of 14min videos to share 1-2mins worth of actual coherent thought.
Same... BUT, I’m just as bad (hence why I don’t do UA-cam video’s....lol).
*Shortcut: “Must Know” =

I fully agree with your analysis - "Eco" mode is destructive - on my 2016 Z06 I installed a AFM/DFM Disabler from Range Technology at 13,000 miles - I bought it directly from Range Technology to gain full support, latest version, and future updates or programming - the price is the same as Amazon - $189 - it takes 2 seconds to install - simply plug it into your OBD2 diagnostic plug located down by your left knee in your Corvette - ever since my Z06 has never been in V4 mode - I believe this is not optional it is mandatory.
Need to know how it works and how you did it
@@xvk317 Go to Range Technology’s website, then order the disabler for your year. When it comes in the mail, plug it in to your OBD2 port on the inside lower left side of your dash. That’s it. If you can eat a pizza you can plug this in. Works great on my C7 with that janky A8 transmission.
@@jrparker4804 As long as it doesn't have mushrooms or fish on it.
doesn't void the warranty?
@@messy908 I'm wondering the same thing?
Range technology makes a module that you can plug into the OBD port to stop cylinder deactivation. Amazon has them for around $200.00.
Rebel Nation Sweet, I’ll have to check that out. Now the question is, when will that show up for the C8?
@@BrinkofSpeed Great INFO
Keion Chase I’m glad you found it helpful.
The other question is will using a module void the vehicle warranty?
Steven Mitchell my Chevy dealer claims it will not void warranty, in fact encourages the use of a module!
To avoid V-4 mode in my 2015 Silverado, I just put it in manual mode and 5th gear. Therefore it only works gears 1-5 without V-4 mode. Corvettes use V-4mode more cause they have less wind resistants. Chevy trucks (shape like a BRICK) stay in V-8 mode more than Corvettes because they are less aerodynamic. (on the highway)
Curtis Reid 👍
The Range technology product works like a champ, keeping the ECM from going into V-4 mode, ever. My mileage barely changed under similar driving conditions. Just plug it into your OBD2 port & you're done. I also had the trans fluid flush/replacement, but don't really trust it. The Range is worth the money.
Skip Hedgepath Cool, Thank you for the info.
Just seen your comment. Looking into buying a C7 next year and definitely getting the Range Technology. I'm assuming since it will be used that the car was driven with out the Range and might be problems in the future? Any tips you have on what noises to look for or do you think just think adding the Range and possibly trans fluid flush will take care of any future problems?
Yeah I’ve used the range module for about a year and works great. The Chevy dealer service manager actually encouraged me to buy the module and said it would not void warranty.! Placing your automatic in manual mode will keep the car from going in 4 cylinder mode however you have to then manually shift. The module is a cheap investment IMO and works seamlessly with your car. The main reason GM uses deactivation is to increase the federally mandated gas mileage per car. Deactivation is fairly cheap for the manufacture to increase gas mileage because it is basically just a software program. I would rather do a deactivation work around than have Corvette go back to what they did in the 70’s and reduce horse power equivalent to a pinto!
MICHAEL mcmillen Cool, I’m going to get it for sure.
Michael are you still happy with your range module?
I'm about 9 months into owning my '18 Z51/A8 trans. I was unaware of this issue, didn't know "AFM" was a thing. Had the shudder, Chevy did the triple flush underwarranty, and the service writer there enouraged the range device. So I did. only hitch in this is if the car sits for a couple weeks, need to put the battery on a tender as the device does draw when connected to the OBD port.
But otherwise, driving with pride and no worries about that silly V4 mode.
@@shaark92just unplug it when you're not driving(or when it'll sit for a while. Or, just use hptuners
I have a 2014 C7 Z51 M7. I rarely take it out of Touring mode. I have NEVER had it go to V4 mode even when “ lugging” it on occasion in 7th @ 1500 rpm. In fact, the only annoying aspect is the occasional 1-4 skip shift @ low rpm in 1st. Reading the comments below seems to bear out my experience. Sorry Mike, M7’s forever!
ken gutwein I hear yeah, but if you don’t have the correct display pulled up, it won’t show it going into V4 mode ever. Trust me though, if you have it in ECO mode, and you are driving at decent speeds on the highway, it will go to V4 mode lots.
I tried the Eco-Mode when I first drove my C7. It always felt unusual to me. I never used it after that. I don't know why Chev didn't do a better job of R&D before allowing that option in the transmission. I'll pass this info along to some C7 owners I know. Thanks.
Michael bagley Yeah, it’s definitely weird, I don’t understand why they don’t get rid of it now that we all know it ruins engines and transmissions. You’re welcome 😊
Does it go into V4 mode automatically or do you have to actually put it in that mode?

I have a 2017 Grand Sport with a LT4 supercharger on it. When they pulled my block apart to hone the cylinders and put forged racing pistons and rings in there they actually deleted the system from the engine internally. Glad I took it to a speed shop that knew what they were doing. When I bought it the guy had only deleted it from the computer system and just threw on the blower. After about 10k miles the front main seal went. When they took the engine apart half my piston rings were broken. Don't just add a supercharger without beefing up the internals!
HAHA, I'm back two years later and guess what... Torque converter is blown!!! In the shop now to add an oil catch can, Circle D torque converter with 3000 stall, carbon fiber drive shaft with coupler delete, and a TCM tune. I cannot wait to see what it drives like! My car has 43k miles.
I always used to use manual mode to disable AFM. I used my diablo recently to delete active fuel management.
I think GM should have it for eco mode only or allow user to control enabled disabled in vehicle settings
ConcernedConservative I totally agree.
I have a 2019 C7 stingray with a 7 spd manual.... The cyl deactivation can be overridden/by-passed by avoiding ECO mode, Also it says in the manual it changes the fuel management system.
Answer ..Range OBD2 4cyl mode deactivation. It works flawlessly and you will never see damaging V8 V4 mode again with your automatic. Will not void your warranty.
one owner characterized the problem after just 1,000 miles on his new C7 Corvette Grand Sport. The owner said vibration suddenly occurred while driving around 55 mph and a dealership said all four wheels were bent and needed replacing. GM Customer Care told the owner this issue was not covered under warranty.
You are Right 👍 I figured it out too.. I hate v4.. I could feel the car rocking...so I now always drive in manual.. you did Good...goin save people lots
So now to the heart of your question. Yes, when you are in manual mode the engine stays in V8. That is true either by hitting the "M" button or by entering "temporary tap" by pulling one of the paddles. Temporary tap will revert to "Drive" after about 5 seconds if you don't request an additional shift in that time. AFM is also de-activated in "Track" mode. Since PTM is only available in Track mode, the answer is yes to that one too. If you are in PTM, it will be V8 only. New for 2020 is the "Z" mode which will come from the factory set up as an extra sporty mode including shift schedules pulled from the "Track" mode, so that will be V8 only. Of course, you can customize "Z" mode any way you want, so if you elect another shift pattern, AFM will return.
I just watched a video and the guy's car went into V4 mode while he was in Track mode. It does not prevent V4 switch8.
I bought the range industries AFM disabler and it makes a WORLD of difference. Best $200 mod ever.
Heck yeah, I loved mine for sure.
With a manual
transmission, the system is only
active in Eco mode. With an
automatic transmission, the system
is available in all modes, but is more
aggressive in Eco mode.
I had that V4 mode turned off when I had it tuned which was not very long after I had my Vette. I didn't buy a 2014 C7 Stingray for MPG. Now it's full bolt on with a A&A supercharger kit making 622 whp n 570trq very fun car.
HI MR. BRINK..JUST WENT OUT OF STATE WITH MY 18 GR. SPORT WITH THE AUTOM...PUT THE DISSABLER ON ...NOT ONNCE DID IT GO IN-2 V-4 MODE..+ I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE ALL 2 HAVE THEIR MUFFLERS DELETED..I LOVE IT!!!
Heck yeah, I loved my range device!
I have a C7 ZR1 and it has neither Eco mode nor cylinder deactivation. And that was all I was going to post. However, I was certain that would result in something like 'You have no idea WTH you're talking about!' Sooo, I had to find proof. And this is what I discovered:
"The supercharged 6.2L V8 LT5 engine in the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 will not have the Active Fuel Management (AFM) technology, Corvette spokesperson Ron Kiino has confirmed to GM Authority .
The decision to exclude the AFM on the LT5 is noteworthy, since it is included on the naturally-aspirated 6.2L V8 LT1 engine in the C7 Corvette Stingray as well as on the supercharged 6.2L V8 LT4 engine in the C7 Corvette Z06, and owners have complained about feeling the technology turning on and off. Though the LT1 and LT4 engines have a significant amount in common with the new LT5 in the new ZR1, the LT5 does away with AFM while adding dual fuel injection.
Otherwise known as Cylinder Deactivation or Variable Displacement, Active Fuel Management shuts down half of the engine’s cylinders in light driving conditions to improve fuel economy. This is done using a solenoid to turn off the lifters on selected cylinders.
>>>Note: I'm certain they meant injectors, not lifters.
Cassie Spencer Lol, cool, thank you for this info. 👍

I have a 2020 GMC Sierra with the 6.2L engine and the 10 spd transmission. I had a major valve lifter failure at 8,300 miles. Fortunately no other engine damage occurred. I am definitely going to get the Range Technology module! Thanks for putting this video together!
I own a 2014 Z51 M7. Same as the others have posted. Only time v4 mode will occur on my C7 is in Eco mode.
Regarding the comment on the torque converter - there is nothing mechanically or controls wise that link cylinder deactivation (v4 mode) to issues on a torque converter. I have a Tahoe that I’ve been driving for 9 years and has cylinder deactivation - no issue with the torque converter.
On the C7 A8 the known issue with converter (shudder) is due to the fluid being hygroscopic. GM has made several fluid composition changes to try and address the water absorption - research it.
As others have said. Range is the way to go. 40,000 miles on my A8 with zero issues have had the Range unit in mine from day one. Doesnt void warranty and you set it and forget it.
Sir, are you talking about c7 corvette? Because i just bought a 2016 c7 with 11K miles on it , do you recommend this range for me ? Thank you sir
This is also why the car has a steel torque tube, to reduce vibration and unwanted nvm in v4 mode. So they forced a mode nobody wanted for 1-2 mpg and added weight and complexity to the car. It's the only bad design choice they made on these cars.
I have a bought new 2017 C7 Stingray with a manual transmission and I've owned it since 6/2017 and I put on 10k/year (26k miles so far) and it's the most reliable 0 issue car I've owned (even my bought new 2019 Toyota Camry v4 SE,, 2014 Toyota Highlander XLE, 2004 Toyota Sienna XLE, 2008 Scion xB had minor issues). I daily commute to work in the C7 (15 miles roundtrip) in ECO mode with auto rev shift every day, and this is the only mode that will do the cylinder deactivation.
mrpmj00 That’s great to hear. I’m glad you aren’t have any issues with it at all.
@@BrinkofSpeed Did you buy yours new or preowned? If preowned, then you don't know its history.
Disabling afm doesn't eliminate the issue it only mitigates it. The lifters still exist and ultimately a cam swap with ne lifters is the solution. An aftermarket converter makes a massive difference too.
Who's selling that aftermarket converter please?

Bill Fleming You’re welcome Bill. I totally understand.
exactly....I HAVE MY c7 for 4 years and ALWAYS stay in M mode and shift with the paddles....it will NEVER engage V4 as long as you stay in M MODE
@@mel-lf3oj thank you !
ON my 2018 Stingray with a 7 speed manual, the deactivation only works in Eco Mode. When in Eco mode the display shows when the engine switches back and forth. Here in Va the 4 cylinder to 8 cylinder mode is useless. I have tried it a few times and the thing switches back and forth every minute or so. Takes very little hill for it to switch. Useless as far as I am concerned.
George McDonald I totally agree, it doesn’t work well at all and this is one of the reasons that it puts so much wear and tear on parts.
First thing I did when I got the zo6 was get the range. Drove it for 85 miles with that v4. It was aweful.
2016 Z51 7-spd, have driven it 20,000 miles since new.
It has never switched in to V4 mode in any drive mode other than Eco.
Not true
Had mine for 2 weeks , messed up the tourque tube , i keep mine in paddle shifting now! ...when the v4 switch to v8 and back to v4 the car will sound funny in the transition , it has shut my cars power to where i could only drive 50 mph ..twice. !! I stay in track mode and paddle shifting only ! I have the auto transmission
....i also changed my oil frkm 5/30 to 15/50 ! The best change i have done period
Took a 230 mile trip on 85N and in economy mode got 26 miles to a gallon, during trip home used touring mode on 85S and got 25.5 mpg, I have a 2017 Z06, and my auto trans does go into 4 cylinder mode when in touring mode, thought it shouldn't, but can clearly see the "4" symbol in the dash cluster. Used economy mode just to test it and see how much it saved me in gas, it was my first road trip, will not use economy mode again.
Scram This doesn’t surprise me.
The 2017 7 speed will only use AFM in Eco mode. Very smooth transition to v4 and instant back to v8. I like it. It also takes the drone out of the muffler delete exhaust. Much nicer on a road trip.
I used hp tuner and turn it off. DONE! plus you can turn off skip shift, adjust tire size ,soooo much more
I’m pretty sure my manual tells me that it will only go in deactivate mode when I’m in eco mode, plus I seen a video a few months ago with a guy saying the same thing, that’s why I only drive my 2014 stingray in manual mode since I seen his video. Keep up the good videos 😃👍
Dennis T Yeah, it seemed to stay in V8 mode if I kept the gears low enough. Thank you for your feedback, kind words, and support. 😊
I have a '16 Z. I have had the shudders, tranny flush, and drive much harder now that I live in TExas. i did get a range device and it works, but it also killed one battery so dead I had to do the whole manual thing about getting in. Ran a charger on the battery for a while, but no joy - battery did NOT WANT to be revived. Since I had just replaced the battery I got it replaced on warranty, but it still was disconcerting. Now I rarely use the thing. I am seriously thinking of a tune to sharpen up the shifts and to get rid of that V4 stuff. That way I won't have to worry bout it anymore.
I know this is a year old, but in a C7 ZO6 M7, (2019), from Tour, Sport and Track it stays in V8 mode. I am not sure about Weather, but it’s only 8-4 in Eco mode. I know of certain Chevy Dealers that sell the cylinder deactivation elimination kit. You can pick the cam for extra. The kit is only a little over $200.
Same here in my 2019 C7 Z06 Automatic.
I have never seen it switch to V4 in Tour/Sport/Track. Only in Eco
absolutely true!!....I bought my C7 AUTOMATIC/PADDLE SHIFT new in 2017 and it has 22k on it now. I can confirm as long as you stay in manuel mode and use the paddles to shift as I DO 95% of the time the cylinder de-activation will NEVER EVER engage!!....regardless of speed or rpm or gear as long as M MODE IS ENGAGED you are safe from that deactivation ever happening...i have WATCHED the vehicle stay in V8 mode for hours and NEVER turn to V4.....so the brink of speed guy is correct and and do as i do and stay in manuel always....the car runs great that way and the engine disasters will be AVOIDED!!..........
I have a 2014 z51 a6 I bought museum delivery brand new, use 4cyl alot, 74k mi now, 8+ years in, engine is Perfect.
Should check with Range technology to see if they will send you one to show on the channel. I have looked at many vlogs talking about these, and the good thing is is doesn't void the warranty, you can install and remove at any time to reactivate, and it doesn't leave any trail that it was installed. Everyone agrees to buy direct from Range due to them giving free updates as GM changes and sends updates to your vehicle via the computer systems. I have a Silverado and a Stingray, the sweet part is the device is interchangeable between the two vehicles.
Another great video!!! I have a 2016 Z06 with 13K miles, this car has been babied since day one. I recently started experiencing Torque Converter Clutch TCC "shudder" (see TSB 18-NA-355). The TSB calls for a complete transmission fluid flush and replaced the new and approved Mobile 1 fluid (blue label bottles - 24 to 26 quarts). The TSB calls for the car to be driven at least 200 miles after the fluid replacement to determine if it fixes the shudder problem - in many cases I've read it does fix the transmission shudder, however in my case it didn't. I'm taking the Z06 in again to see if the TCC needs to be replace - they run a "snapshot" frequency diagnostic that must be sent into GM as proof before they will authorize the TCC replacement. This is very serious and it must be costing GM a bundle and if you are out of warranty it will cost Vette owners a bundle. I believe this issue is pervasive across "ALL" 8L90 transmissions and that GM should extend the warranty for this transmission to at least 100,000 miles.
Perry Jurgens Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Yep, this is a real problem and GM should have handled it better once they figured out what was going on. I’ve had my fluid changed 4 times and it hasn’t fixed the problem in my car.
@@BrinkofSpeed I just started having it in my 2016 Z06 and I literally just bought it 10 days ago... It's at the dealer now getting the flush
Thanks for everyone's comments re: C7 7-speed... I just got one and have been using Eco mode... no more!
I own C7 z06 if your car shudder or seems like torque converter issues its going in V4 mode even in track mode, buy cylinder deactivation module totally different Monster full time V8 no lag.
Totally agree with moderator here----I have a 2017 base sting ray and ALWAYS drive in Manuel mode and the V4 setting will NEVER be activated regardless of gear or speed!----I've watched it for 2 hours at one drive and will verify that to be true!!----the car also runs very well in Manuel mode as you can downshift and hold gears longer than the automatic setting which is always shifting up as quickly as possible-----so save the drivetrain and ALWAYS drive in Manuel mode---
Just bought cylinder deactivation module problem Solve constance V8 power C7 Z06 you'll be happy best money you can spend for C7
The only reason I ever got the A8 is because it has the manual mode. It sucks that V4 can ruin the parts but we still get great MPG on V8. I didn't know that V4 was activated outside Eco mode, though. I've been on manual mode since the beginning 99.99% of the time anyway.
Hopefully GM will have the V4 not be an issue on the parts for the C8 if it's still forced upon.
I have the "Range Technology" plugged into mine for that very reason, which was to avoid the cylinder deactivation for the reasons you mentioned. Along with the technical issues, it was just irritating and downright wimpish sounding. I would suggest going to the ordering directly from the site versus Amazon due to the fact that I read (can't recall the site forum), that there has been some updates from original. I only have 17K on my '15 with about 1k with the plugin so hopefully no damage has been done. Gas mileage wise it hasn't been a concern since I wasn't buying it for heavy travel and more so for the things that are totally contradictory to good gas mileage. I still get around 25 mpg when cruising so that's good enough for me. Hope this helps and good luck vettebro!!!
Totally blindsided by this and will have to check it out. Another GM Z06 surprise to go with overheating, torque converter, brake rotor warpage, rear end whine, paint rub damage, fuel vapor issue, vacuum brake failure, power steering failure. Now this... a C8 is now further out on the must have list. Thanks for the heads up and do not forget to change the rear end lubricant... a new recommendation by GM. What else!!!
Parham OBriant I hear ya, it’s annoying for sure. I will never understand why when a company figures out that something they put in a car isn’t any good, why they don’t immediately just remove it in the next model year.
Don’t forget about the wheels cracking on Z06 and GS
I have a 16 man. Unless you go into eco mode, it will NOT go into 4 cylinders mode. I never use it. The car will lug if you go into eco and 7 th gear. It will shudder and lug if you encounter a hill. Sport, Track, and Touring will not allow you to go into 4 cylinders, I can guarantee it. Love the car, love the c8, but no manual to row, c8 no go. I will keep my C7 as my last Vette.
My ‘19 Grand Sport with auto trans only goes into V4 mode when the car is in eco mode.. And I never drive in eco mode. I drive in sport mode.
Thanks .. I also have the 2019 Gs and also drive it in sport ❤️ even the touring mode is V8
I had it turned off on my M7 right from the start. I want to do a proper delete kit and remove those pesky lifters that are prone to fail like in my Silverado.
2016 3LT Z51 8 speed auto. Runs in V4 mode a lot, never had a problem. My understanding is that the C8 does NOT have the cylinder deactivation feature which I feel is too bad. Too bad the video doesn't give more detail about what actually supposedly fails and how it's connected to the V4 mode. Doesn't make much sense given the sparsity of information given.
I have the same car you do. The AFM lifters in your engine are the problem. Going in and out of V4 and V8 causes lifters to stick and blows up engines. Bypassing AFM with a plugin device will keep it from going into V4, but the crappy lifters will still be on the inside. There is actually a class action lawsuit with GM happening right now over all the lifter failures and torque tube disasters related to Active Fuel Management (AFM). Hence this video and all the complaints from owners of GM vehicles, not just Corvette owners.
I recently purchased a 2017 A8 used with 7700 miles. I also purchased a Range device that plugs into OBD port and it disables v4 mode in Drive. Just incase I need to put in Drive mode. I mostly drive in manual mode.
Diamond Wolfs That’s awesome. Congratulations on your new purchase and thank you for sharing this great tip. 😊
@@BrinkofSpeed Your welcome! Had to do my research on A8 because of the torque converter problem / shuttering problem. Got a used Collectors Edition. @autobot_c7
Thanks for talking about cylinder deactivation & how that will ruin the motor / transmission on your C7 (&C8). Great info.
Harry Smith You’re welcome. 😊
Does anyone know what specific damage to the engine and/or the transmission is caused by the AFM operating in four cylinder mode?
@@irarosenberg I'm still trying to figure this out should I be worried?
@MobileTechMuscle you are fine. AfM, dod dfm are all just fine if you do 5-6k oil changes and you aren't uber erratic with your gas pedal
.
Update: I installed the stage 1 Livernois Motorsports package on my C7, and not only does it RIP but it deletes the cylinder deactivation. It can easily be switched back to stock tune for warranty issues if needed.
On a 7 speed manual, the only way to go into cylinder deactivation is to place the driving mode in the Econo mode
I have never used eco mode on my C7 2018 ZO6 and I’ve never seen it kick on ! I use only Touring mode and I get low 20’s miles per gallon on the highway consistently which is fine for me !!! I heard from some people that Eco mode is not perfected and can cause issues with the LT4 Supercharged Engine ! I never wanted to use the Eco Mode because it’s not worth the aggravation of having an issue with a defective system! Gas costs what it costs end story!!!
I have had cylinder deactivation system deleted in my 2017 corvette by LG Motorsports so it runs V8 24/7.
Rich Degenhardt Awesome.
If you had LG MOTORSPORTS Deleted I don’t know why everybody does not do the same. I would assume if they are worried about warranty all they would have to do is have their mechanic turn it back on if they needed to take it in for service. By the way where is LG MOTORSPORT Located at?
@@eldridgecharlesjr2671 LG Motorsports is just north of Dallas about 20 minutes or so.
@@eldridgecharlesjr2671 because its considered a tune and a tune on your engine with an enginr failure is grounds for denial of warranty
I was checking out eco mode when I got my new C7 Z06. Interstate legal speed 600 miles in eco mode got 27 MPG. On the return trip in touring mode got 26 MPG. What was the big deal with eco mode? I did not know V4 mode was kicking in while it was in touring mode. That is why I saw only a 1 MPG difference. I will have to check out the manual settings to see if that works and also see that MPG results. I like you got 32 MPG in my C6... nobody believed me. Thanks for the re visit!
😳 MIke... very interesting and informative for me since ill be buying a C7 Stingray with a 7 speed manual in about 5 years ! NO ECO mode for me !
The EPA does have some what of a say in the cylinder deactivation. GM makes way more cars than Ferrari etc so they will get dinged if they dont put some kind of a efficiency mode on the car.
Is there a permanent way to do the AFM delete as opposed to getting the ranger?
Have a 2014 vette with American V-8 muscle, if I wanted 4 cylinder muscle I would have bought a Chevette!!!
Hey Mike, I had a 2017 GS, M7 trans and I believe that deactivation only worked in eco mode. I drove a lot in eco mode trying to get good mileage especially on trips. I did not know that it was hard on the engine and trany until I watched your video tonight. I was not informed at the dealership that the car even had this feature when I bought it. When I drove it home from the dealership the car would jump when it switched to V4 and back into V8 mode. I thought something was wrong with the car. I figured out what was going on and just accepted it as normal. I traded the car in August 2019 with 9145 miles on it for an allocation on a C8 HTC. My order was pulled by GM today. Order statusis now 2000. What a good day it is. I think that I heard that the C8 will have deactivation on it also. Hope that it has a mode that it won't work in. Thanks for the good content that you always have. Looking forward to more. Don
Don Ezzo Yeah, it’s crazy that they even put this in a Corvette, and now that they know it’s so hard on the engine and transmission, they should do away with it for sure. Contracts on your C8 order status! I’m so happy you enjoy my content. I’ll definitely keep it coming your way. 😊
C7 M7 will only go into V4 mode in eco mode. My 2018 C7 Z06 has never been in V4 mode because I’ve only ever driven the car in touring, sport, or track mode. I’ve never put it in eco mode. Good video though!
Great video mic. I don't I have a Corvette right now, I sold my C7 and have my order in for C8 automatic. I live in Florida but I have a friend in Connecticut who has a 2016 Stingray Coupe M7 so I'll pass the word on to him . Thanks.
Thanks for sharing that. I have a 2019 Z06 automatic. I don't know why the Z06 has eco mode because we paid a gas guzzler tax on the car. I don't know if the Zr1 has deactivation mode. Thanks David
You’re welcome, I don’t get it either. The ZR1 does not have deactivation mode.
The best information I have heard. About a Corvette in New year's good job
Gary Richardson I’m happy that you enjoyed it. Thank you.
@@BrinkofSpeed I have owned over 15 Corvette. I own a c7 ZO6 convertible with the zo7. And I have never paid it any attention. So yes good information. I can't drive it now I'm in Michigan. Keep up the good work
Thanks for the info. You can plug a Range or Diablo module into the OBD to avoid this problem. However, who knows what unintended effects that may cause. I will switch to manual mode.
A very informative video -- also good to read the "comments" on this matter -- thanks
A good tuner can do it without Chevy finding out. Had to find one locally for the emissions on my c5. Running no cats with a straight pipe. Check engine light comes on. Trust me all tuners are not created equal
Walter Miller Cool, I’m sure they aren’t. Thank you for your feedback. 😊
Yes a good tuner can do this. However for probably less money you can buy a Range module that will accomplish the same goal. Once the car’s computer has been altered by a tuner the dealer can potentially void your warranty.
I think Chevy should be able to turn AFM off on a customer request as long as it’s done at the dealership to protect warranty.
robert Foley I totally agree.
I firmly belive this was added to give the police a chance when chasing vetts and to prevent idiots with money from crashing because they don't have the skills to drive a car this powerful lol
I work for an extended Warranty Co. We have replaced 1000's of GM truck an Car LS & LT1 Lifters. The VLOM, Valve Oil Lifter Manifold is the culprit!!
It scares me as the GM TECH did not tell you this. There is info out there.
Yep home on the Range. For about two years now I tried to paddle shift before that.
Ed Dean 👍
A lot of people think that the manuals only go into eco only when you select eco mode. Not true. My zo6 goes into eco in touring mode at low and steady RPM. You can hear come out of eco when you slightly speed up.
Check your owners manual on this . It says v-4 mode only activated during eco mode .
I have an 17 GS with an automatic trans. I find it interesting that the other guy had torque problems. In the fall i took my car in for service, which I thought could be trans or torque related. They claimed to not have observed the problem while they had it. This causes me to wonder if this could be the problem.
Jay Man Yep, it probably is what’s going on. I’ve found from talking to others, that most dealerships like to deny anything is wrong.
@@BrinkofSpeed
Thanks for the 411. I'm taking it back after it warms up around here. I appreciate the information.
@@stormcrow5198 Theres a current gm service bulletin to completely flush and fill your auto trans fluid with a reformulated Mobil 1 fluid, and naturally filter change along with that I imagine. The factory fill has been found to draw water condensation so much that it contaminates the fluid, seemingly causing the shutter. I think the new adjustment period after this is they have you put 200 or 300 miles on ,to get the new fluid pressured through the clutches, bands and gears. I've heard if this dosen't fix the shuttering then I think the next policy step is torque converter replacement. If after that then nothing left but to replace your transmission. Contaminated fluid does progressive damage to the rest of the trans. If it's a low milage car, hopefully the fluid change does the trick. I'd be all over it on them about the torque converter if you still get jerky shifts. I just bought a new 19, one of the last manuals, hopefully the clutch doesn't wear out in 6 mo. Good luck at the dealer. Oh one more thing ,you can have an oil sample analysis done on your trans fluid to find out if it has water in it and to what percentage of it any other wear materials that are higher than threshold levels to back a claim. If you did that first before you go to the dealer, then you have proof of contamination levels. They can't argue with science. I was the oil analysis monitor for my maintenance unit in the Army years ago. This technology was was amazing for 1986 and how the lab would find problems before major damage. Everything got lab checked monthly and now it's been commercially available for years.
I remember the late model stingrays with 427 engines most people found out that replacing the valves with stainless steel aftermarket valves kept the motor as far as EPA it's the average mpg of all vehicles sold that they have a quauta to reach where as super cars & exotics produce a fraction of # of cars yearly
I have a 2014 Z51 2LT 7M and my Vette doesn't go into V4 mode unless I'm in Eco mode only. I watch it all the time and it always stays in V8 in touring, sport, and track.
If i dont use eco mode at all on my 2019 GS manual . Would that avoid all these problems?
Can’t comment on the corvette, but my 2015 Silverado has 269000km(167000 miles). Cylinder deactivation has never been an issue, truck has never been to the shop except for regular maintenance. I don’t really buy that that is what causes these engines to fail. Bolting on after market parts perhaps. Maybe I’ve just been lucky.
Great information just purchased corvette c7 from now on I won’t drive in E -co
I got a camaro with V4 mode a little while ago. How many miles did it take for the car to break? Was it covered by the warrantee? And last, how long did it take to fix, because I'd need a rental if this happens. I'm definitely not going for a C7 or a C8 if this is a problem with the camaro.
Adriel Lettman It happened with about 11k miles on my car. It was covered under my warranty yes and they gave me a rental car.
Get the Range AFM Disabler. It works!
Hi just wondered what you think of AMPSOIL signature series ATF for the 8L90 transmission instead of the Mobil1 LV ATF HP????
Don't understand why GM would put cylinder deactivation on a high performance car that gets decent mileage at full cylinder mode...
Bobby Johnson I don’t either.
I just keep my car in manual ( paddles) and it never goes into 4 mode. Also, leave it in sport mode.
I do the exact same thing. Never use D if you want to really enjoy your car.
EXACTLY WHAT I DO!!....
I did talk to a engineer about echo mode on the C 8 which it will have. With the DCT transmission it hopefully won't hurt the trans.
That's strange the Z06 and ZL1 have the same engine. I had a 2017 Camaro ZL1 it did not have echo mode.
Thanks
Mark Pointer It is very strange
There is a fuse under the hood in fuse block to take out to shut it off, Look in manual it tells you witch one, good luck everyone.Larry Triplett
For automatics to stop it from going into V4 you have to switch from manual. It’s stays in v8 the whole time
Manual? Like sports mode ?
NEW to Covettte family. Heard same thing with my Ram Hemi 1500. I have 140k miles no issues. Truck uses only FULL synthetic oil . Your thoughts.
Hello i know im a Year late to this video but i was driving my Corvette that i bought for my birthday 4 months ago February! 2015 Stingray 1lt yup nothing fancy! Well i was driving home from a friends house i had it on Track mode and on Drive and i heard a loud clunk! When driving trough streets at low rpms then getting on the gas on the empty streets! I googled it and i saw that it did go into v4 mode and then rapidly switch back to V8! Now does this happen to everyones corvette? I hate the fact that mine is Auto but its all i could find at the time and now this? Having to drive it on Manual paddle shifters does get annoying! Specially when im rolling around with the lady…
Great informative video
Need to look into that,
Nice to see you are still informing people about the C7.
Just about everyone just talkes about the C8 for obvious reasons...
PR 65 I’m glad you enjoyed it. Yes sir, I will continue to do so until I don’t own it anymore. 😊
My 2017 ZO6 ZO7 manual corvette never goes into V4 mode in any setting other than ECO mode
I think you can get a tune that bypasses cylinder de activation however pick a reputable company banks might have something to bypass it also Chevrolet was forced by the EPA to put that feature in most of their v8s it's not something I'd see them spending $ on otherwise
What should I do to prevent damage to my 2017 c7 auto? Can I really do anything reasonable? Also I think my warranty expired? isnt warranty only 3 years on these cars?
I have a 14 Z51and I’m a daily driver I had to get my torque tube replaced a couple of years ago, thank god it was still under power train warranty.
Seems like a common problem, isnt it? Do you know what causes this and if this would continue to happen or is likely to happen at higher mileage down the road?
My 2015 Z51 had to have torque converter replaced with 3000 miles on it. Ridiculous.
Now has 6100 miles and so far been OK.
