Who cares
This song came out during my time in the Navy. Not a single one of my fellow Vietnam vets disliked this song. It spoke loudly about the situation.
Those on student deferments or lucky in the lottery could sit back and criticize the war. But back then, a Black guy couldn't hide out in Canada and not everyone could afford to do college full-time. Some volunteered, but a lot were drafted, and they ended up being seen as the enemy. How they were treated by fellow Americans is a shameful chapter in our history.
Tell The Sir!
God Bless You!!!

@jay. That sentence was appropriate for that year (1970) with the Vietnam war going on.

This jam made a heavy, strong statement back in my day, 1970. Will never forget the intense spirit and strength of his soul. A classic and masterpiece of our baby boomer generation that brought us together, and the best of soul music that I continue to dig and enjoy today in 2023. RIP Edwin

Do you prefer Edwin's cover or the original?
It applies just as much today as well. :'(
This song is as prevalent in 2022 as it was when it first came out! Thank you Edwin Starr. Rest in peace.
You ain't lying.
Exactly what I wanted to write✌
There will always be wars to the end of time. We are a violent species that cannot help be to kill each other.

I will waiting for this commentary for two weeks
A song that will never stop being powerful and relevant.
Yes! The Brother sings truth.
Sadly enough
My brother this song must be known by the society
hopefully, we will reach a point where this is common sense and doesn't need to be said.
War is only good for banks and arms dealers! *NO ONE ELSE*
He died 17 years ago today and would be 78 years old if he were alive. Hard to believe. He did a lot of good songs but this one has stood the test of time. It is more relevent now than ever. So many fools are ruling this world and talking and making war. But they are not the ones to died and suffer, others are. They should all be made to listen to this song. Thank you Edwin Starr!
I’m ex UK military and I have to agree
la chanson est de Norman Whitfield et Barrett Strong.
I agree. War means destruction of innocent lives. I had forgotten this song. I heard it in 2001, in the tv show Family Law. I'm chilean. I didn't understand the lyrics then. Now in 2023 I googled the lyrics for the first time.
Thank you for uploading this!
It hit the charts on July 11th, 1970. It was number 1 on the 29th of August. It stayed there for 3 weeks. Edwin walloped the country with this. No one I can think of could sing this with such raw emotion!
I agree, and remember it like it was yesterday. I was 8
It's actually a cover from the temptations. But Edwin took the ball and stole the show with it.
Still have the vinyl 45. Then in 1971, was drafted, ended up in 'Nam. Shit, I was so happy to come back in one piece. At 72 now in 2024, I play this tune every week. Good God, y'all.
🫡Thank You for you service sir and for the many sacrifices you made. God Bless You & Your Family. 🙏🏻
Welcome home, sir!
Thank you for your service! What a war it was.

What voice ! What a song ! As relevant today as when it was written and thousands of years before as well . I wish I could sing like him .
Can we take a moment to appreciate just how good the bassline and percussion are on this track?

I think Eisenhower ( who was a great man ) at the end of tenure realised that war has to be an ABSOLUTE last resort when your country is threatened which is why he wouldn't back Britain and France over Suez ( and when the US tryed to drag us ( The UK) into Vietnam where politely told "Sorry Not Today Thanks 😁 "
This song came out when I was eleven years old, and it didn't take long for it to reach number #1 on WRKO in Boston. Like about two weeks. I didn't know until many years later that this is a cover version. But Edwin Starr did a fantastic job doing it. He owns this song!
The heart and soul this man put into this song cannot be found anywhere else.
Every radio station and satellite broadcast should play this monumental track on a loop especially now !!!

As a 90s baby, listening to this song takes me back to the movie Small Soldiers. Along with that, jamming to this song now makes me want to put on my best aviator sunglasses & drive an old-fashioned hummvee with a good-sized Old Glory while playing this song nice & loud. Just to show off how happy I am to be an American.
Omg same lmao, though I was born in the 2000s. I use to love that movie as a kid. Although I’m Canadian

You can't find a song sung with more conviction. That's what made it badass that Edwin Starr had to really have these feelings to have put that much emotion into it.

Great Song.
Thank you, Edwin Starr.
"War can't give life. It can only take it away."
you're wrong
MrTrolmastr It can free people, it can help others, but there's better options than war, because war will indeed take away life.... even if it's trying to do good. So Victorious I isn't exactly wrong, but you're not wrong either. But war does more bad than good in this time.
MrTrolmastr
You think you're clever because your choice of name gives you a shield of 'insincerity' to hide behind - like a child behind his mother's skirt - but think about how illogical your two-word contrarianism is.
War will always involve the loss of life, deemed 'worthy' or otherwise.
MrTrolmastr I command your pardon? War is really useless and only kill people. I mean is that the point of war that is stupid.
What if you give birth during war, hmmm! Or what if u fall in love with 1 of ur enemies and u get a baby? hmmm
The day I graduated high school me and my best friend, who's like a brother to me, were walking through the hallway and we put this song on. It may just be my ignorance speaking, but I felt that the Heavy Metal movement was created because rock music of the late 60s (mostly Hippy Rock) wasn't exactly getting the message across...so something else was needed.
In comes the apocalyptic Doom and Gloom of Black Sabbath. Well, that was my interpretation anyways...

Meh I love this song and I still think war is justified sometimes.
"Fortunate Son" is another good one. As well as "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath. This one is the all-time champ.

Grew up with this song. Tragically still relevant today.
I love this song SO so much!!! It is awesome!!! This makes me think of Rush Hour! 😁💕💕💕
This song is the reason I stopped underrating tambourine and its impact to a song. I'm a musician, I started self taught on drums, then took the natural progression to bass, then to guitar, then as I improved, I went back to bass and got even better at that, then to drums, and that arc made me a friggin metronome. Anyway, I never put a ton of stock into percussion prior to noticing the tambourine in this song, I understood its place, but I didn't think it had as big of an impact as it actually does on a song. I was also 10 or 12 years old at the time, just a stubborn kid, if I didn't pay attention to it, it wasn't important. Then, this song came over the jukebox in the bar we were doing a show at, and, thanks to Mary Jane, I honed in on the tambourine player (Jack Ashford, part of the famous Funk Brothers group of studio musicians.) I NEVER EVER disregarded the importance of percussion and tambourine to a song again. In fact, whenever I hear someone make fun of tambourine, I TRY to make it a point to show that person this song, and a lot of times they don't care haha, but sometimes that do, and seeing someone have the same revelation I did about the tambourine is actually kinda cool haha
this song will always be relevant
and here we are 😢

It's bizarre that even though I've heard this song before I have never LISTENED to the lyrics and realize how important it is.
It’s not every song that gets a heartbeat. And each time he shouts “WAR” at the beginning of the chorus is a gut punch. It’s like the producer decided to record everything at max volume and two inches from the mic as if to say “If you go deaf, it’s gonna be during my song”
So happy my dad was apart of this band
"War" is one of the greats, and probably the greatest antiwar song ever written! I still believe in its message! I'm a pacifist, and I hope to remain so for the rest of my life!
Most truthful, realistic, and meaningful song ever made.
I remember WAR being used for the CBS TV show FAMILY LAW Monday Nights at 10 PM.
This Grammy winning song was released 53 years ago (1970). The angry message still resonates with today’s headlines about the war in Ukraine.
