    I got the Hornby 66 for £63 brand new.
    Smooth, quiet runner and it pulled 9 coaches with ease. I don't care for detail or DCC so it was a great choice for me.

    Id have to go for the Bachmann I have several and all run well with no motor or derailing issues plus no delicate detailing bits to get damaged and lost , stick a tts sound chip in and all for less than cost of hattons dcc ready loco.
    Good video when will you do update on the rebuild.

    I had the derailing issue with my Bachmann 66. It came from the front end bogie when the NEM socket was catching on the fittings for the air dam on the front end. I shaved off the fittings with a hobby knife and that sorted it

    Hi Matt - That was an interesting comparison , I have 3 of the Hornby 66s and with a TTS decoder I can get sound for under £100 . But it can never compare with the Bachmann or Hattons models. Personally between the 2 I would go for Hattons with the extra detail.

    Hornby 66 is an absolute bargain. I have a Hornby 66789 bought for under £70. It runs faultlessly and the large logo livery looks superb. I also have a Bachmann 66, 66701 from a few years back and it is much heavier with more detail etc but it derails on curved points! Hattons 66 looks good but I have read about too many quality issues to buy one of those at the moment.

Sure the mechanism and overall detail aren't absolutely outstanding, but there's enough charm on that thing for me to not regret buying her (not to mention it's a lot more affordable than the other two). The specific 66 I've got is No. 66773 'Pride of GB Railfreight'.

    The problem with all locos is - that ist my experience of 56 years of modelrailroading - that they have to be run in. Give them 30 minutes in each direction without train, that will do. Then there is the weight of a loco and the number of powered axles. The real pulling power can only be seen, when the locos are in action with a train. We saw it at our club´s layout when the whole train was inside the gradient of 2,5 %.The retail price for my class 66 by Bachmann in EWS Version was 60 pounds, just in the beginning of production. I´m satiesfied with this loco.Nice video, best wishes from Germany. The hattons engine is for my mind to expensive in price, I won´t buy one.

    Great video, and now having seen that people have to modify the Hatton's one 'out the box' to even run across points for £160 quid, it makes you think whether they should have concentrated on what's inside the loco more than the outside which does look outstanding, but completely useless if it is unreliable.

    Matthew what a good line up of your Class 66's and in real live I have seen all 3 but my top 3 will start with 3rd Colas Rail Freight 66846 not Named and yes it's nice tho the livery can get dirty 2nd GBRF 66789 Named British Rail 1948 - 1997 yes a nice model tho the name plate still wonky and at the top you can still see a bit of white 1st is DB Schenker 66185 which you did not mention it's name DP WORLD London Gateway. Now 66185 Operator history which has DB Schenker on it's side of your model is in fact DB Cargo UK from 02/03/2016 to Present. James Joseph JJ Dyer

    • @al66class59
      @al66class59 4 роки тому

      DB Schenker renamed themselves as DB Cargo. It’s still the same company.
      185 used to wear DB Schenker logos; it’s not necessarily intended to replicate the loco as it is today. The DB logo currently worn by the real loco is the same small DB logo as it had when schenker lettering was applied, though.

    I think Hornby have got it right. We need simpler, cheaper budget models like this. Great potential for customisation as We all used to do in the 80’s and 90’s. You really don’t want to take the Xacto modelling knife to a £100+ model.

      @@Leathersladekitchen Tom ain't wrong, they were shipped out with faulty axle boxes, I had one and after about 20 seconds of running axle boxes would start popping out one by one from the bogies. Then a lot of the detailing parts and easily damaged with a slight touch, one of the buffers fell out.
      Then there was a questionable design choice in regards to couplings, that being to add couplings to both ends of the locos you need to remove the entire body which clipped on, hope to god you don't damage the detailing, unscrew the entire buffer beam to add a new one which had to be sanded down as it didn't fit the chassis correctly... Then they decided to use a over complicated NEM attachment system.
      For £150, multiple delays and the fact they told everyone that this would be the BEST class 66 on the market I'm disgusted that being a customer who opted for the early air freight batch I received such a faulty product. for about £30 less I could find a good Bachmann 66 and for under half the price I could get a all round nice Hornby 66.

    • @Leathersladekitchen
      @Leathersladekitchen 4 роки тому

      Dethrax Video Wing granted, but I think Hattons have taken an undue kicking on these, they tried to do everything possible to make the best model and yes, it has had issues, but to say they’ve had major flaws is a bit of a strong line, they’ve sold probably hundreds of not thousands and a few people, probably less than 100 have had any real issues. I’d call a 90% successful delivery on what bridges the gap between RTR and finescale pretty good, wouldn’t you?

    • @dethraxvideowing1326
      @dethraxvideowing1326 4 роки тому +3

      @@Leathersladekitchen Oh sorry we must live in completely different worlds but a locomotive which is £150 shouldn't have that many faults in that many cases.
      The axle boxes on advanced models sent out to UA-camrs were prone to falling out randomly this was before the airfreight models were due to be shipped out, Hattons themselves said that they would be glued in and fixed. Got mine and they weren't, not a random mistake with mine but a massive design flaw on Hatton's part, they had a article on their site just telling people to glue them in. They also lied which is part of my many gripes.
      For all the delays for releasing it, they had no excuses for how many issues which they had. It should had been somewhere close to perfect, but I found issue after issue which my Bachmann and Hornby models don't have. I brought a 'brand new' Heljan DP2 at a slightly lower price and it didn't have nearly the same amount of issues. In the same time frame I got myself a Hornby Flying Scotsman for a similar price, runs like a dream and honestly it's perfect as a model.
      Did you get one yourself by any chance? Or are you just regurgitating what your mates mate said...

    just to add to: Hornby, basically the old Lima loco, which, in it's day was fine, and slight Hornby upgrade later still does what it says on the box, put some time, effort and cash into one, and it'll be fine. Bachmann, early ones, bags of s****, bogie clearance and pick-up deficiencies, rectified on later batches, but again, a 15+ year old model, and again, if you know what you're doing, will run and look just fine. Hattons, Hmmm, lots to be said, over-hyped, certainly over- engineered, certainly, a step too far on somewhat gimicky details, might turn round and bite them ( hattons) BUT having recently got one, they are nice, yes, costly ( DCC sound fitted) but not much more if you have a standard loco and have it PROFESSIONALLY done, ( see Roads-and-Rails ) and again, on costs and budgets, if you only want one, for a small layout, buy the best you can, if you want a big fleet to fill your shed and one on every train, go Hornby or, as in real life, as EWS did, go EMD, they were built down to a budget too.

  • @sapphirejunction8993

    You literally can't compare the Hornby 66 to the Hattons 66, the Hattons 66 has a real presence on the track with detailing light years ahead whereas the Hornby just looks like a cheap toy.
    This leaves the Bachmann 66 in a bad position as it is too close in price to the Hattons model but having said that the Hattons 66 does have a major QC problem causing a lot of issues with the model.
    Glad you mentioned the hand rails on the Hattons 66, to me they are over scale on the cab fronts and protrude too far out on the cab doors.
