  • Check out this very nice 40 year old RCA VTVM that I found at a local Goodwill store. The probe was missing, so I needed to make a probe. You'll see the inside of the Vacuum Tube Voltage Meter, as well as tests using the VTVM. Enjoy!

The unit you have there dates from the 1960s. RCA stopped using the round "meatball" logo in 1968. The newer meters from the 1970s would have the block RCA logo. Even later, these meters were made by Viz, and those have their logo on them. It's a very nice meter to have and yours is in very nice shape.

What a great find! I used to work with an VTVM mid 80's early 90's, I used it for servicing Motorola voice pagers, they had a high input impedance. There is still a use for that meter today. Thanks for sharing, brings back memories.

For some tests a analog meter is better. We used to use analog meters for peaking levels, the DMM's tend to jump around a lot and hard to read when peaking.

I've got a Eico VTVM from the 50's, and need to replace the caps. Thanks for another great video. I think the MZE link will help me find the caps, finally.

Great video, lots of great info. and very clear to understand. I got real lucky at an auction. An old Radio man passed and his wife gave it all to the Auctioneer. She told him" just take it all".
I got the VIZ wv-98c. He has already replaced caps in it and is on the money with measurements. I got a whole lot more. 10 Tube testers, 2 Signal tracers, 3 Signal generators, 1 Tektronix oscilloscope, 1 BK frequency counter, 2 Simpson 260 meters, 1 Sencore transistor tester, 6 Multimeters, Capacitor testers new and older ones like Eico 950B, Power supplies, a Variac.
1 Sencore sg165, 1 Weller solder station.1 Heathkit VTVM. Thousands of parts, caps, resistor, pots, light bulbs, all in organizers. Probes, Jumpers, Tools of the trade ect.
I got hundreds of tubes, there were thousands of tubes I could not get them all. I got some Instructional books and Manuals but there were whole sets of them from back in the day.
I also got 150 or so old Radios that are from 1930s to 1960s Am,Fm,Shortwave, almost all need repairs of course.
There were hundreds more radios. Table tops and floor models. I could not get them all. I mostly went for the test equipment.
All testers have been updated and work great, some look like they had never been used. He did great work restoring radios. I just wish I could have met or known him. RIP
I may have 400.00 invested in it all. They only put out so many items at each auction. Took me about 4 months to get what I got. Auctions were every 2 weeks. It's all been sold now.
Thanks for the video for I am just learning to use such meters and work on electronics. I love the old school equipment.

Great stuff - very crisp and clear video, and of course quite instructive Looking forward to watching additional videos from you. Just got one of these myself - looks like someone has done some previous work on it, a bit sloppy, unfortunately. Cheers!

Great video. I believe that the inductor you referred to is actually a capacitor. The schematic does not have any inductors as part of the circuit. I believe it is C9.

back again. 3 wire device ( mentioned below) to replace a vtvm c/d cell failed. not wanting to tax built in pwr transformer with a diode and cap circuit fed from vtvm filament i opted to use the circuit board from an old 5.7 vdc smps used to charge a cell phone instead. to its output went an ebay adjustable LM 317 regulator board. all this neatly in a pill bottle. finished project fit neatly where D cell once was. gotta love these vtvm's

OMG. I haven't seen one of these for many years. Talk about going way back. The first time I saw one of these devices was during my last year in Electronics School in 1970. We were using VOM's and VTVM's with a kind of scaling digital display before that. I remember thinking these things were the greatest inventions ever.

electronicsNmore I'll bet you were. Just one thing I would like to correct you on. You said the meter had an 11 megohms input impedance as opposed to a 10 megohm impedance on the newer meters. The VTVM's actually have a 10 megohm impedance with out the 1 megohm resistor that is normally in the probe. The meter is calibrated for use with this 1 megohm resistor. The total input impedence is 11 megohm with the 1 megohm probe resistor in place.
I remember when buying the high voltage probes for use on TV high voltage systems, especially when the transistorized meters started coming out, you had to make sure you bought the right probe with the right resistor or the meter calibration would be wrong.

    • @electronicsNmore

A dual diode tube with a center tap transformer is full wave rectification, even if the capacitor is tested okay on lower voltage, it still can be extremely leaky on higher voltage, thumbs up :)

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  7 років тому +3

The dual diode tube is not across the output of the step down transformer, it's used to rectify the AC input from the test probe. Thanks for watching!

WOW !!! Who would abandon a jewel like that to the wasteland of a Goodwill store !! And what are the chances that an knowledgeable/appreciative person such as yourself would rescue it !! Amazing !! Good condition units like This go for $140+ on e-bay !! I image you hunt the store every day to find something like this - and only on very rare occasions !!!

You wouldn't believe the things I find. Have you seen my key machine video? :-) I live very close to a very wealthy area, and most of the items I find are from wealthy old men that passed away. The widow and kids want nothing to do with all the items, so they give them away. I'm there a few times/week. The megger was also from the Goodwill store. You'll see that in another video coming up. I just came across a motor worth $400, and you'll see that in another video also. Thanks for watching! Be sure to rate thumbs up and share.
