Love your kit man! You're going from hybrid more to electronic in recent years ... Is it because you prefer the sound, look or feel, or is it just easier (less triggering issues, live mixing problems etc.)? Latest Pendulum shows are sick, but I must say I miss how the gigs sounded when Immersion came out!
Thanks Maraya! So, the evolution of electronic drums have come a long ways since I started doing hybrid drumming around 2003 or so. I play acoustic in Illenium with triggers and lots of my solo shows are acoustic hybrid. With Pendulum, I was doing hybrid but the acoustic drums have always been muted in the FOH actually. The cymbals are miced and coming through of course. Once Roland came out with the TD50 and mainly the VAD series I made the switch away from acoustic triggers. Acoustic triggers have always given me issues and triggering from Ableton, we had to delay the entire show 40+ channels by as much as 15 milliseconds. Now, all those issues are gone. I love acousic drums, BUT for this project the VAD with acoustic cymbals makes the most sense. And, many of my videos lately are on my Twitch streaming kit, which is all electonic, making it super easy to stream and switch sounds on the fly. So, in the end, the drum sound of Pendulum is no different, other than I'm able to play better and the articulations are better and I am having a better time, (more fun). Well, the only thing is that my drum-cam footage doesn't have acoustic drum sounds... that is the main differnce, but the crowd doesn't hear that. the reverb in tha room is wild, was there any absorbtion / accoustic pannels put up or just played there as-is?
no nothing, just a massive open air festival tent with an aluminum top or something..
