In the late 80's when I was in high school, I had a cool history teacher, that would incorporate Iron Maiden songs into his teaching, because a lot of their songs are history based. Man that teacher was genius for teaching that way, because it kept our attention on what he was teaching.
Sounds like a horse galloping at times and a history lesson at other times, Bruce Dickinson’s vocals are awesome. The two perspectives are perfect. I am full blooded American Indian and this one really speaks to me in regards to my ancestors and I appreciate the story telling and the arrangement not to mention the musicianship of this song. Great reaction!!
I appreciate that the two perspectives are not at all presented as morally equivalent. It was eye opening and strangely (given the music) sobering to listen to as a white teen growing up in the Mountain West in the 1980s.
Youre right when you say it sounds like a horse galloping. Steve Harris’s bass playing style it’s called galloping bass.
I also like the dual perspective, but it is not clear WHO is running for the hills.....the natives, the soldiers, or settlers.
Based purely on Bruce’s signing I always assumed it was the natives.
Interesting to me as a mixed race person white and Native.
After 40 years of listening to this song there is zero that is not perfect in it. Every second of the music and lyric is spot on.
Best live band you'll ever listen too. The skill of this band is incredible
Iron Maiden - 'Wasted years' ... 'The evil that men do' ... 'Afraid to shoot strangers' ... '2 minutes to midnight' ... 'The flight of Icarus' 🔥🔥🤘🤘
Wasted Years...Holy SHIT - Fear of the Dark....and then everything else Maiden does...
I JUST SPUNKED xxxxxxxxx
This song is a history lesson!!!
That EVERYONE in the USA needs to read along to. 💯
Can you imagine reading the lyrics in front of the classroom lol
Yeah. Lets do more reading about how the Brits treated the Natives in the states. Because this is what it's about. Not the Americans, but how the British treated the Natives.
@@warhorse58gt It's a one sided view of history honestly. There's a great documentary on youtube (about three hours long) called The Indian Wars which does a much better job. "Native americans" were not one cohesive unit or innocents with one singular goal any more than Europeans were. As with all things, history is complex.
@@warhorse58gt You forget that it applies to Americans because they were Brits until they gained independence. They and their families were the primary beneficiaries before independence. So, are you saying that America's founders or the colonists engaged in genocide?
Don't try to make out the history of the region now known as the US started in 1776. Besides, those same people Americans revere and their descendants carried out the exact same policies for more than a century after independence.
@@warhorse58gt “Out on the plains we gave them hell” suggests the song is about the United States’s interaction with native peoples. I don’t know of any wars on the great plains involving the British army.
Was a young teenager when I heard this. (I'm 54 now)
I wasn't particularly interested in "heavy" music like this but I clearly remember it dawning on me that this was a song about something real. It had a message and told a real story. This song is why I now have a 37 year-old Iron Maiden tattoo and more Maiden t-shirts than I'll ever realistically need 😄 😁
Lol nice. I am 53(54 in Dec)
I too wasn't into them much when they came out, but this one song kept me "liking" them. Now I can say they are a Top 10 band of mind.
Iron Maiden is one greatest Heavy Metal groups ever and this is one of my favorite songs!
always interesting to see how people from other genres of music react to good metal. Metal isn't always shouting, these people are also trying to tell a message
And with that drum and bass line you can almost feel the horses and/or people running at full speed... Iron Maiden is a band you have to react (if UA-cam will let you) live, if not just check it out for yourself, you will not be disappointed...
Yeah your right the gallop of the hoses in those drums give this song the drive same with the trooper
'Hallowed Be Thy Name' is my favorite, it's a story about a man reflecting on his life and pending death just before he is executed.
Iron maiden is amazing, intelligence, history. They were the perfect metal band, my favorite when I was 12. Today they hold up, still kicking ass and being remembered.
Flight Of Icarus and The Number Of The Beast are a couple good ones you could check out. I'm glad you're enjoying Iron Maiden, they're definitely one of greatest metal bands of all time.
YES!!!!!! Flight of Icarus!!! My first Iron Maiden album as a kid was Piece of Mind LOL
Only offial video
The number of the beast is one of Iron Maidens' best albums, and Clive Burr was an very, very good drummer!
.... and the lead singer flies their own airliner to shows. how badass is that? on top of all the musical talent ... truly amazing
Hell Yeah! UP THE IRONS!!! You should check out 'Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner' or 'Hallowed be thy name.' 🤘💪🤘
Absolutely, especially the Live after Death recordings
Not to be that guy (but totally gonna be that guy): but if you want to search it, it is "Rime of the Ancient Mariner", not "Rhyme".
Gotta love the classic Iron Maiden gallop
Hallowed be thy name , for a fantastic drum beat gotta hear The Prisoner, it is AMAZING!!!🔥🔥
Iron Maiden - fear of the dark live @ rock in Rio 2001
They are the best story tellers and if you like to listen more stories you can check
the dance of the dead,
rime of the ancient mariner,
The clansman (live)
When the wild.wind blows
Hell on earth
Fear of the dark
And you should check the live recordings as they are double energetic and crowd contribution is awesome
Hallowed be thy Name though less obviously historical is also a best example of their story telling.
Alexander the Great
Sign of the Cross live. It is a MUST. Also Wickerman is really good.
Biz has his metal headshake down! This is one of my favorite IM tunes to see live. Few peeps realize how most metal tunes carry a deeper message, until they give it a listen. Loved the reaction. More please!? ✌
I was picturing Custer's last stand to this song at the Battle of the Little Bighorn
Steve is such a great lyricist. One of my favorites. So many things he writes are incisive.
Check out 'aces high'when you get a chance ....it's about the air battle of the British Royal air force fighting off the Nazi invasion in 1940 during the Battle of Britain
.
Check out Tears of a Clown from Iron Maidens "Book of Souls" album. Its a tribute to Robin Williams
You're ready for Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner \m/
In the 80’s, this was music for rock nerds and misfits. It was “devils music” and the cool kids all made fun of it. It’s so nice to see it redeemed
You know Bruce is also a Commercial Pilot on the 757/767
Great Metal AND a HISTORY Lesson: IRON MAIDEN
You will always get a history lesson with Maiden.
Welcome to the club!!!
About that Album Cover art, Biz… His name is EDDIE “ The Mask” IRON MAIDEN. He is the mascot for Iron Maiden and appears on all of their albums and merchandise. He wears a different outfit and/or theme appropriate to each album or tour. He has been there since 1980 and yes, the artwork is killer every time. 🤑
Thanks for the insight
That's not his name. Look up the poster for Iron Maiden's "Live After Death". The headstone on the grave Eddie's coming out of says "Here Lies Edward T. H-" (His last name starts with an H, only he's in the way of the rest of it.)
It's Eddie 'The Head'. :)
I was 16 when this album came out. I saved money from babysitting, bottles, and RC bottle caps to buy the album and a concert ticket. I was one of the few girls in my town that LOVED heavy metal (I still do)... this reaction was fun to watch!
Ah cool i like your vibe Up the Irons!!
Classic ‘Maiden! 👍🏻
That album cover for Iron Maiden's 3rd album 'The number of the beast' in 1982 was originally intended for their 1981 single 'Purgatory'... but the art was too good for a single, according to the management, so they saved it for the next Maiden album.
'Run to the hills' was a crucial Iron Maiden single in 1982, cos it introduced their new singer Bruce Dickinson to their fanbase... The prior Maiden singer Paul Di'Anno had been w/ Iron Maiden since the club days and recorded 2 albums w/ the band and established their initial career. Going into 1981, touring became a priority for Maiden, and tour dates began to line up fast all over the world... and Paul Di'Anno was under pressure to perform night after night. He couldn't cope w/ the workload and turned to drugs, smokes & alcohol while touring... By the fall of '81, he was burnt out and the band & Di'Anno parted ways. Steve Harris (bass) was worried cos Iron Maiden was established w/ Paul Di'Anno on vocals... a new singer would have to win over their fans. Also, they had to write all new songs from scratch...
Maiden had toured w/ a band called Samson in the club days, and their singer Bruce Dickinson had been interested in joining Iron Maiden... so when they asked him, he jumped at the opportunity. Of course, Dickinson found himself frustrated in the studio under Maiden's producer Martin Birch, who wanted a more demanding vocal performance on the record than he was used to.
Iron Maiden had a tour in 1982 and put out the single 'Run to the hills' first... and it took off in the UK. Fans immediately embraced the 'new' Maiden sound and singer Bruce Dickinson... As a result, the album 'The number of the beast' was Iron Maiden's first record to hit #1 on the UK charts and sell platinum in the US.
1982 PLEASE LET THAT SINK IN.
1982 !!!
I remember standing on line for this album and the seeing them open up for JP and Madison square Garden
The bass player (SteveHarris) is the leader of the band and often the primary song writer. So if you listen to the bass line, it's fast paced and sets the score and tone for the rest to follow. Amazing band!
That scream at the end is what does it
for me!!
Seen them live twice and can’t wait dove them to tour again! If you really want your mind blown, look up the lead singer, Bruce Dickinson…the man is a amazing! Even flies the tour 747 to their gigs!
This was the song that introduced me to Iron Maiden back in the early 80s. I saw the music video on MTV around 1983 and was drawn in immediately. I bought all the albums that were out up to that point and kept going with each new release to this day. They are also the band I have seen live in concert more than any other. About 8 times and counting!
Awesome song by Iron Maiden. ......I saw these guys years ago at Allentown Fairgrounds...Allentown , Pennsylvania. ..Absolutely Fucking Awesome Performance.....I had to look up the exact date...I was still 15 when I seen them....June 1st. ..1985.....The Crowd was about 20,000 give or take a thousand or two.
Tis is awesone every time i see them in concert. Ill see them for a 3rd time in SEPT 22 :)
Iron Maiden is the fucking king of 80’s metal! 🤘🏻 UP THE IRONS BABY! 🤘🏻
You must listen them. Live
THIS was the song that introduced me to Maiden!
I’ve watched just about every reaction channel do this song, you have the best breakdown I’ve heard out of everyone I’ve watched! You catch what a lot of people miss in these songs!! Much love ❤️
Two suggestions: for a happier song, go with "Wasted Years". For a live performance song, "The Clansman en vivo". Note that it is not about the KKK, its not about about racism, its about Scottish clans fighting for their freedom.
the clansman is basically the movie "Braveheart", just as "Man on The Edge" is "Falling Down" and "The Edge of Darkness" is "Apocalypse Now".
i mean, bravehear is about william wallace and what the brits did to him, but i'm pretty sure they watched those movies before they wrote those songs, lol
Loved your comments on head banging. I’m in my 50s and still headbang my way through whole concerts. But, I pay for it more than I used to. (My fellow middle aged metal head friends and I actually talk about modifying our technique to minimize neck pain.)
Hallowed Be Thy Name by Maiden is one of their best!
If you get a chance, watch Flight 666. It's a "documentary" by Iron Maiden of a world tour that they did. It was really good
Been a huge fan of Iron Maiden since about 1979. Steve Harris was the one who got me playing bass. I even stuck by them during the "Blaze Days". Still got all the vinyl, all the cassettes, all the CDs, DVDs, everything. Patches on my leather and my denim. Had a van in CT years ago, had a mural of the "Killers" album cover on the side. I miss the van, but can't say I miss CT.
Great reaction to an incredible song! Number of the Beast should be next
I have been a Maiden fan since 82. They are awesome in concert up the irons.
While I was never a huge Maiden fan, I had several friends back in the day that were into metal … I listened to it when we all hung out but it was just never my cup of tea 🤷♀️ I really enjoyed listening to it with you though … I never paid attention to the actual lyrics back then. Thanks fam!!!! 🎸🥁🤘
💯KBiz 🌟🙌💞
They are good give them a chance lol the story telling is fire
I believe the song.was inspired by the film "Soldier Blue" He interviewed Cree Nation members when writing song
Wow....must say I'm suprised by your introspective thoughts on this song. New sub, thanks for listening
That picture in your head thing is why i fell in llove with their music when i was kid. My cool older cousin being into them probably helped too. This is one of my favorite guitar solos.
Great reaction brother, these guys have been rocking so long, amazing group
Thank you Biz! Another great reaction to one of my favorite bands. Iron Maiden are classic, iconic metal. Keep it up my friend!
🙌🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿
Invaders (the first song from this album) is one of my favorites! Check it out next!
I haven't found any reactions to it yet, but I think it's one of their best.
Just came across your reaction... And liked your reaction and open mind to their message. We need more of that. 👍
I give you one. If you are going to get into Maiden, you have to listen to one of their very first best,. Sung by their first singer, who is great too. "The Phantom Of The Opera" . yaaaaa, you will bang your head.
I’d recommend stranger in a strange land, I love Maiden but I love all genres of quality music from Kate Bush to Metallica to NWA Public Enemy The Beatles, music that speaks and delivers.
Don't forget about snoop dogg ; )
Maiden always has awesome cover art
iron maiden is the goat, missimg out on there videos,,greatest live band ever,,,,
Iron Maiden... Live 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Great to see you vibing on some classic metal...it was some dope shit!!
I love Iron Maiden almost as much as you do, BizMatik. I'd like to say more, but you are just so enthused about them, and I've been listening to them for 35 years! They are eternal on my play list.
Iron Maiden teaching history one song at a time
Your breakdown was on point.
Hallowed Be Thy Name is top ten metal songs of all time for me. Talk about story telling!!!
Thanks for taking this one up. Requested it a few weeks ago. I appreciate it. The Trooper is another good one, and you can't pass up Hallowed Be Thy Name. Man, I love to get a pint of rum in me, kick back, and blast these on surround sound. It just transports you to another realm entirely.
For a more Current history lesson, by Professor Maiden, I would suggest "Two Minutes to Midnight." Based less on actual events, this song speaks of the very real threat of Nuclear War and Politics, in the 1980's. And maybe even today.
Greetings and Love from Germany again. Thats what i call a 'Reaction'. But let me start from the beginning. Over two years ago i saw my first 'reaction video' by accident. I didn't know what thats all about and slowly i got it. Since then i'm desperately trying to find someone who represents 'Reactions'. What i found was people that listen, move a little and at the end everyone told me the same. How amazing the band is, how much they enjoyed it and goodbye. Oh, and that i have to become a patreon. Not really intressted in the history of the band or in the background of their music. Thats totaly the opisite of what i was looking for. Nearly every reacter i tried, (more than 300, i guess) failed. But, out of nowwhere i found you, buddy. The first video i had to watch was your AC/DC reaction. I couldnt believe you did the song "Ride On'. No one else did it. I've searched for someone with Passion, with the goal to find himself new music, new bands. To learn whats behind the band, their music, their background, to dive deep into the lyrics. What i searched for and finaly found, was you, my friend. I knew it, as you said: I have to listen the whole Album. Not skipping a single song. Skipping songs would be a crime." Unbelievable, you have my deepest respect. Well i'm 50 years old now. In the eighties i became a metalhead. What a great time i had. I've searched for that one guy who takes me back in time. To re- live my feelings, for bringing back memories. You are now like i once was. They way you react, just like me..thats so emotional and crazy. Wait, its getting better. Iron Maiden. I'm a MaidenManiac. My first listen was the Studio Version of Hallowed be thy Name. And so on. Mostly the Studio Albums. There wasn't much live stuff arround in the 80s. No live TV Shows with Metal, no UA-cam, you know. You do the same, studio. Awesome. Everyone goes like..'you have to do Maiden live'..bla, bla, bla. Respect again, buddy. You say: "No, that makes no sense. I want to get into the band deep and from their beginning." The expirience of seeing Iron Maiden live on stage, what they are able to do live, with songs you already knew is priceless. All your emotions and feelings...i will feel it too. And i have to thank you for that, deep from my heart. I hope could write down what i mean, so that it makes sense to you. I was lazy and bad in school. Especialy in Englisch. And you're right, Maiden always paint a picture with their Melodys and their Sound, and so that it fits with the theme/lyrics. I would suggest to you, if you allow, a song from their latest Album 'Senjutsu'. The Studio/Audio Version of 'Hell on Earth' with lyrics. This song is perfect for our situation right now. So well writen and with an impact to wake up Human Mankind. Back in the nineties i thought the same about Michael Jacksons 'Earth Song'. Sadwise people didn't learned a single thing. I have to say Maidens Masterpiece is an 12 minutes long track you have to take on. Link below.:
ua-cam.com/video/t9RGlW40gqw/v-deo.html
Wow,..so thats all for now, my Bloodbrother. Thanks again, you made my weekend...Peace & Stay Safe, mein Freund...from Köln/Cologne. .UP THE IRONS
🤘 Up The Irons 🤘
UP THE IRONS 🤘
Thanks for doing this one, I knew you would like it . Probably my favorite. When you have time to yourself, you should watch them in a live version. I'm guessing that the one you just watched was the official video. If not check it out, you'll definitely get a kick out of it.
I fell out of my chair laughing when you mentioned Thanksgiving. good stuff
IRON MAIDEN!! My favorite band! Grew up on their music and many other metal bands. Definitely check out "Wastes Years "
My cousin gave me the killers album in about 82 .Gangis Kahn is like a mongal tribal stomp .no lyrics just straight fight .but it takes a breath ! I have Jam this over 40 years and still get up and jump.Power slave the song of power slave album.Rhyme of the Aentient mariner .Chuck Berry #1 in my book then Maiden and I've played blue grass guitar my whole life.it all fits together in irish music .bela fleck and the flectones .make sure its got future man on drums.Afro celt sound machine is another jazz fusion.I do glad to see how people see how maiden represents freedom ".To the devils throat the saber I shall put." From old folks song "horse soldier" later RHP
Story telling at its finest, funny I came across this today...just went and saw Bruce's An Evening with Bruce Dickenson last night...a great 3 hours of story telling...amazing
As many others have said: Rime of the Ancient Mariner 🤘🏼
Great reaction
I recommend you
-Powerslave
so sick drums
If you didn't read the outline of the song first, this reaction is the best I've seen. So many people don't "get" this one the first few times....Their songs are very well put together. Much more advanced than most other popular bands.
Steve harris, the founding member is one hell of a bass player and he writes the majority of the songs, great reaction.
They are great story tellers. My fav is 'Aces High'. It's about the British Air Force during WWII. Every time I hear the song, it feels like I'm in the cockpit of the plane.
RHYME OF THE AINCIENT MARINER!!!! Next PLEASE Biz!
I live across from train tracks, and I don't mind it because I love trains, bit sometimes it's like the conductor is feeling aggressive with blaring the horn, and the train going over the tracks can sound eerie and haunting in the early morning hours.
My favorite song of theirs!
You hit the analogy right on the head most don't get it. You my friend are a rocker and an iron maiden fan.
“That is not dead which can eternal lie, yet with stranger aeons, even Death may die.”
Awesome reaction 😎😎😎😎
🙌🏿🙌🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿
This jam scared the S out of me when I was young lol
😂😂
Hey Biz. I've been an Iron Maiden fan since close to the beginning. I went to my first show back in 1983. Yes, in that old, haha. I really think you should start doing your reactions to the live versions. You will then have an even higher opinion and appreciation for their music. It doesn't matter which song you start with. I can almost promise, YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED.
UP THE IRONS!!!
I’m a rock fan but IMO this is the best metal song for me
NEAJ! That galloping bass!
Check out fear of the dark live at Rock in Rio 2001!
That drum sounds like a horse running faster and faster!
the Heavy Metal Anthem of all time, period !
Iron maiden is faster than other bands, and is the start/precursor of a movement called "power metal" that is all about fast metal songs
My favorite Iron Maiden song 😎🤘☠️
"And that's how Thanksgiving was formed." effin' crack me up!!😆😆
😂😂😂
