After I sadly found out Paul was gone, I remembered that freakin' funny video... His spirit surely lives on through his music.. Man.. The Bill Evans' Trio.. Amazing how they sounded together... Brilliant musician and man... Rest in Peace and Thank You!!!
Rodrigo Saenz turned me on to bill Evans in 1967, and that change my head.... and that changed my life . I started hearing melodic rhythm . Paul Motian, has been my favorite drummer since then. Still my idol... I know was a little cocky , but--- The music , no matter what he is my favorite.
I shed a tear at hearing at Paul's passing. You will be missed, I was really hoping to see him perform in the next year or so if I could have made it to NYC. Seems I'll just have to imagine.
My dad had this best friend, for 50 years. I grew up with him as my uncle. He was one of the kindest, and most knowledgeable people I’ve ever been able to talk to. Paul was his uncle. My dad told me stories of having dinner with his friend and Paul and remembering only laughing. He said he was such a good guy, who loved to ramble on about music and playing. He never missed a beat, truly. His work with Bill Evan has made me cry more times than I’d like😅, and it blows me away more and more every time. Sadly, my Dad’s friend passed 2 years ago after a tragic battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease. Rest in absolute, wonderful and unbothered peace, with your uncle, Dave.
It's not hard, but easy to say one favourite drummer: Motian is it! Motian is my favourite too My friend said: "Motian is not a drummer..., he's an Artist!" I agree. I live in a small country, so we have not many concerts here. But once I had chance to listen Paul Motian Trio. And it was unbelieveable, when Frisell and Motian played together!!!
Ha, ha, ha! I knew this video...funny. He is talking about a drummer from the 30s/40s, coz in fact, he is coming from that period. His style came from that. Listen to his solo on "New Rag" from the Keith Jarrett trio album "Somewhere before" on Vortex 2012. And compare the style of Gus Johnson drum solo on "Raindeer" with the Lionel Hampton small band. Very similar, even the sound. and Gus Johnson is a drummer who used to play with Count Basie...
