I think Snape and a few other Death Eaters were aware of the existence of Horcruxes (while no longer in the Hogwarts library, there were books on horcruxes published and therefore buyable, likely in a bookstore in knockturn alley) but they all were missing one crucial piece of information: what someone looked like if they created more than one. Voldemort is the only one who dared risking it and it was only after a few Horcruxes that it really started to alter him, physically. Voldemort was the only one who knew what it did to the body over time, if you kept creating them. So, while some Death Eaters might have otherwise considered him having one (we know Regulus Black was aware of at least one horcrux), they would have shelved the idea once they saw the transformations. It didn't fit the known effects of a horcrux and wouldn't be necessary if he actually had created a horcrux, so for many it was more logical to think that he found another way to build up his immortality. It was easier to think that he had done other experiments, as far as the world was aware (or more accurately, anyone with knowledge on the topic of horcruxes), horcruxes didn't alter one's physical appearance, so Voldemort must have been doing something else. It was also an illusion Voldemort actively sold going by his claim that his followers had seen the steps and measures he had taken to follow the path to immortality further to anyone else. From the way it was written (and before we, the reader knew what Horcruxes were), I assumed that he had done several different magical experiments over the years, from spells to potions, there was no hint that he used one single ritual a few times for each of his transformations and I think that was intentional. To create this grand illusion, this smoke and mirror act to hide the fact that his secret wasn't something new, no cutting edge dark magic but something that was already ancient.
And it worked! Even Dumbledore didn't start to piece together that Voldemort had created horcruxes until one of them ended up on his desk with a hole burnt through it and even than, he was unsure. Sure, he had enough circumstancial evidence to conclude that it was a horcrux, by what Harry had described to him and the way Harry had disposed of it but even then he had doubts (especially due to how it was used) it still took him two years and a rousing speech by the Dark Lord himself for him to be absolutely certain that Voldemort really had done the unthinkable. That he didn't use unknown obscure magical experiments that resulted in the "dangerous transformations" that turned the handsome Riddle into the sinister Voldemort but in fact used the darkest known invention to wizarding kind and cranked it up to eleven.

I think Dumbledore's idea was that it was less likely for someone to go look for such books (inside Hogwarts, outside hogwarts) if they had never come across the term. Well, I don't remember about book Snape but as we saw in one of the memories that Snape gave Harry when he was killed, Snape did know that a part of Voldemort's soul latched itself onto Harry and the only way for it to be destroyed was for Voldemort to kill Harry. So you could argue that Dumbledore maybe didn't tell Snape that Voldemort had multiple Horcruxes but he certainly knew that Harry was one of them.

While there is truth in this, it could still be conjectured that Snape didn't actually know about horcruxes. He may certainly have had an understanding to some degree that part of voldermorts soul latched onto Harry, but that doesn't necessarily mean he understand what that meant or that it was an actual form of magic that had been practiced and had a name. More likely that it was just some fluke of magic, and not something intentionally done. This is given creedence by the fact that that's how Dumbledore explains it before he starts to realize that voldemort actually did create horcruxes. I believe that although Dumbledore, grasped that part of voldemorts soul had latched onto harry, didn't fully connect that to Harry being a horcrux until much later. It was an obscure bit of magic that he may have had knowledge about, but it was just in the back of his mind and the dots werent connecting. He might not even known about 'horcruxes', but even if he did, based on information we get, it's something that was incredibly rare for anyone to actually do. In fact, it could be safely assumed that nearly no one EVER had actually done it. It's so obscure that only very devout researchers (a researcher may be good like slughorn or bad like Tom, it doesnt matter) of the dark arts would ever come across the idea. Like less than 1% of wizards ever. And then, just as small or smaller of a fraction of them would even be willing to attempt it, and then even only a fraction of them ever actually doing it. It was so unpracticed that it was essentially only a concept/theory, and not much of one at that.
I don't remember the dialogue but Dumbledore actually basically says it himself in goblet of fire. He is using the pensieve to go over his memories because he feels there is some bit of crucial information he is missing, something significant that he is failing to realize. We the readers, at that time, think it's in regards to the tournament and possible return of Voldemort, and Dumbledore himself probably thinks so too. But while that can and is very much the case as well, it was also very likely the beginning of his brilliant mind recognizing that there were important details stored in his memory that had significance beyond his current realization. Then voldemort returns and all these things start adding up, and we the readers feel that perhaps what he had been missing were things like Moody actually being Barty Jr., and likewise Dumbledore probably did at first as well.
But again, while that very likely was part of it, it could still be true that there was more too it. And I believe over the course of the next school year, Dumbledore still had that nagging feeling that he was missing something, and that feeling hadn't lessened to any significant degree after things unfolded.
Which I then believe is one of the largest reasons he delved back into Voldemorts past before Half blood Prince started. Because think about it, he probably did this kind of research back when voldemort was originally in power. Hell, he obviously did a fair bit before ever even meeting Tom as a child. But now he has this feeling that there was something really big that he was just not putting together, and is going back over things to look at it all in a different light.
Going further than that: He's had this understanding that a 'part' of voldemort was passed to Harry when he was a baby. He knows that voldemorts soul possessed Quirril. He hears about what happened with the diary, and how Tom says in his own words that he preserved a 'part' of himself within it. He finds the ring, and grasps that it is something similar. He vocalizes that he has suspisions about what is going on here, and yet after all this, it's not until he actually hears the word Horcrux that it all comes together for him.

At the time of the true memory from Slughorn, Voldemort already murdered his father and made the first horcrux. Theories will always be out there, but for this one I think it is simple. JK thought about Horcruxes too late. When she figured out a way to keep Voldemort alive in her head she did not realize that it would be impossible for his followers to not know. So in my head, Snape always knew, he was just incapable of doing anything about it. There is no way, IF JK had thought of it from the beginning that she would not have wrote these things in, therefore I believe it was a late in the game Epiphany.

    *edited*
So I got a few things wrong when I first posted this, like reeeally wrong. I’ve read the books at least 6 times now but still get things mixed up and forget. But I still think I’m generally I am right. So instead of editing the whole post I’ll just say what I got wrong: Snape and Tom did not go to school together. Snape got orders from Dumbledores painting to give Harry the sword. But one thing I’ll add is that in Chapter 33 of the Dealthly Hollows when Harry is seeing Snape a memories in the pensive we see a scene where Snape is arguing with Dumbledore on why he won’t share everything with him and is trusting other secrets to Harry when that’s dangerous because Harry’s mind is connected to Voldemort. Dumbledore responds (quote from memory so not word for word) “when the time comes and Voldemort no longer sends his snake out but keeps it close by it’ll be time to tell Harry the full truth.” “What is the full truth?” “That when lily sacrificed herself to protect him a piece of Voldemort’s soul broke off and entered the only other living thing in the room, harry. Voldemorts soul and Harry’s are one. Voldemort cannot die as long as Harry lives.” So I believe that with that key piece of information added to the fact that Harry would need Gryffindor sword at some point, the fact that Dumbledore had a ring that was Voldemorts which he tried to protect with a curse but Dumbledore destroyed with the sword, and that Voldemort was also trying to protect his snake, and the fact that Snape was a master in the dark arts and it wasn’t a secret Voldemort wanted to live forever and was successful at coming back to life plus the fact that Wormtail who lived with Snape as his servant was the one that casted the spell that brought Voldemort back to life and Snape most definitely would have gotten that information from him one way or another for Dumbledore, I believe Snape probably found out at some point in his career about horcruxes if not by having access to the banned book Magic Most Evil but through his own research, I think he had all the information he needed to put it all together himself. *end edit*
    Incorrect:
Firstly: Voldemort never told Snape about making horcruxes. But at some point Snape found out. But Snape either knew about there existence already or that information was available to him either when he was a student or after he became a professor. Let me explain.
We know that Voldemort didn’t tell Snape about the horcruxes after the Gringots break-in. When Harry connected to Voldemort‘s mine he listened to Voldemort‘s thoughts and one of those thoughts was a question he asked himself on whether or not he should tell Snape. And he decided not to because he learned he couldn’t trust anyone because of Bellatrix and Malfoy‘s failures. Secondly, Tom Riddle clearly already knew what horcruxes were before he spoke to Slughorn, because the book “magic most evil“ was still in the library at that time and was only removed when Dumbledore became headmaster and removed them because of Tom Riddle. The only reason why Tom spoke to Slughorn was to get the information on whether one could split their soul into seven pieces instead of two. Finally, I believe Snape at least had the knowledge of what horcruxes are because as a Slytherin who devoted his life to mastering the dark arts he most definitely would’ve read ‘magic most evil’ if it was available to him. If the book was available to Tom then it was available to Snape because they were going to school at the same time. Or he would’ve learned it from some other source. I think this is proven by the fact that Snape went out of his way to give Gryffindor sword to Harry during the deathly hallows book because he knew the sword with aid him and destroying horcruxes. Why in the world would Snape do that if he didn’t know about horcruxes? It makes no sense. He had to have known. And since we know Voldemort didn’t tell him, we have to assume Snape learned about it himself.
Even if ‘Magic most evil’ wasn’t available when he was a student, he most definitely would have learned about it when he became a teacher and had access to all band books. Snape, lover of the dark arts, would have definitely taken advantage of his position to read these band books on dark magic. This is my belief.

Voldemort trusted Snape?? Voldemort doesn't trust. To him, other people are just disposable tools.
Snape was a master occlumence. We don't actually know how good he was at legilimency, being able to extract information at will from children who don't know how to defend themselves is hardly an accomplishment.
Dumbledore believed Voldemort already knew about horcruxes and how to make them when he went to talk to Slughorn and was only interested in an opinion on what would happen if a person made multiple horcruxes because as far as anyone knows it had never been done before.
Even if Snape had realized Voldemort was likely to use this type of magic to attain immortality, it's unlikely he would've guessed Voldemort made more than one horcrux because nobody had done it before. Snape also wouldn't have had access to all the knowledge and memories Dumbledore was able to obtain in order to ascertain the exact number of horcruxes and what they might be. Many of the people from which Dumbledore got memories were long gone by Voldemort's second rise to power, and for most people the events that allowed Voldemort to come back would've been the first indicator that he had at least one horcrux.

My opinion all along has been that Snape figured out the horcrux thing. The man knew more curses in first year than any of the seventh years. He was so fascinated by the dark arts from such a young age. I would not be surprised if Snape actually had a copy of the book at his place. JK describes his place as having many shelves of old leather bound books.
I don't think the Hogwarts Library was the only place you could find a copy of it either, that is before Dumbledore removed it. I don't think it was a common book, but I bet you could get a copy of it at Borgin & Burks or some other Dark Arts store in Knockturn Alley.
Dumbledore basically told him that Harry was a horcrux. Also Snape was there just after Dumbledore destroyed the ring. He asked why Dumbledore put it on, given the it had a very powerful curse attached to it. It took extraordinary action on Snapes part to keep Dumbledore alive. Dumbledore also told Snape to look out for a time when Voldermort would fear for the life of his snake, and keep her under magical protection.
Now Snape is not stupid, just from those conversations with Dumbledore alone he could have figure out there were at least 3 hocruxes. Then, I'm sure there was a discussion about the diary after Chamber. If not, Snape sure as hell saw Voldermort's reaction upon learning that the diary was destroyed. So now he knows about 4 horcruxes. And if Snape knew anything, not just about Voldermort, but about magic in general, and how 7 is a very powerful magical number...I'm sure he would have figured it out. And whatever questions he had I'm sure Phineas Nygellus filled him on everything at Grimmuld Place when he was there. We all know from the memmories Snape gave Harry, Snape went to Grimmuald Place after the 7 Potters event. This is where he finds Lily's letter. I have read several fans saying he goes there to get the letter, which is just dumb. He goes there, because he knows about the jinx, and goes to get his tongue tied, so he can't reveal the location of the Order to Voldermort. With Dumbledore dead, he is now a secret keeper. Even in the book, Ron asks if they think Snape had been by to have his tongue tied, and Hermione answers yes, otherwise he'd be able to tell the deatheaters how to get in. I think when he was there, Phineas told him all about Harry and Dumbledore's conversations, and what they thought the horcruxes were. He also could have added that he saw Kreature trying, and failing to destroy a locket. Which causes Snape to ransacked the place seeing if he can find it. This is when he stumbles on Lily's letter. And he doesn't just take the letter because it has Lily's name on it. He takes the last page because it reveals the connection between Dumbledore & Grindelwald. The reason I think it was him, and not Mundugus that trashes the place is that Mundugus would be too afraid to go back to Grimmuald Place after the events of the 7 Potters. He would be too afraid of running into anyone from the Order.
Also, Regulus's bedroom door was locked. Mundugus would not have thought to relock the door. However Snape would have.
But knowing about the horcruxes and doing anything about them are 2 different things. Voldermort told noone anything about his horcruxes. Best they could do was to sit back, and to wait for a clue as to where they might be, and investigate when they could. VIDEO IDEA: What if Voldemort used the Time Turner and why didn’t he know about it? If he knew about it, he could’ve gone back in time to his younger self and raised himself and would’ve had even more advanced magical abilities.

    • @sinnvolltasche2169
      @sinnvolltasche2169 2 роки тому +2

You can't really interact with yourself using a Timeturner. You risk terrible consequences. Furthermore, if he had done that, it would have already happened. There would be no timeline in which he hadn't been raised by himself (see in prisoner of Askaban). His younger self then would have to go back too, and raise himself again, so it wouldn't be of much use, wasting years. They also don't just give the kids in an orphanage out to just anyone coming to the doors.

Slughorn only told Voldemort about splitting his soul into 7. Dumbledore was certain that he already had the knowledge to create horcruxes before that point. So Voldemort didn’t learn about them from slughorn. That’s simply not true. His specific question was what happens when splitting the soul into 7 indicating he already knew everything else or he would have started with the basics before escalating to such a serious question lol. I have a hard time believing someone like snape who also delved into dark magic couldn’t find the knowledge a lot easier than the trio who don’t touch dark magic all that much and certainly don’t have any kind of extensive knowledge into it like snape or Voldemort. It even states the existence of horcruxes on “herpo the fouls” chocolate frog card. Yeah the trio might have trouble finding information , but snape is someone who surrounded himself with dark wizard and became a death eater. I feel like dark knowledge is a lot easier to access for him than Harry , Ron , and hermoine inside of hogwarts and limited to hogwarts reading material instead of the entirety of the wizarding world including knockturn alley which seems to have a lot of dark artifacts and such. If nobody down there know about a horcrux I would be thoroughly surprised. Again it’s literally written that herpo the foul created one on his chocolate frog card. The knowledge that Voldemort really wanted to keep hidden was the fact that he made 7. Something no one else had done and no one would even consider. Slughorn who he asked the question and believed to be the most knowledgeable in the subject to give him the answer even looked appalled. The very thought was beyond anyone to ever think up unless you’re the darkest wizard of all times completely void of love and remorse that is lol.

7 months late, but from what I could find by researching she was not a part of the Order during the First Wizarding War because the Ministry of Magic had recruited her to spy on Voldemort and his followers (remember she is an Animagus being able to transform into a cat). However, she did become a part of the Order at some point in the books/movies, probably Philosopher's Stone as I'm sure Dumbledore was keeping Minerva well informed of Harry's importance to help keep him safe.

I wouldn't put it past the ol boy, Severus.
He was a very smart man and I imagine he believed that Voldermort had made One Horcrux... There were said to have been several witch and wizards during the first war who gave Voldermort great duels but just couldn't kill him. At some point, this would had to have gotten ol Severus thinking.
He was the male version of Hermione when it came to studying and learning new things.
Dude reinvented the standard potions guide book and developed his own spells that became Very important to the golden trio decades later.
So yeah, Snape knew Voldermort must've created a Horcrux, but I seriously doubt he knew Voldermort made more than one.

Tom learned about them after looking around the restricted section in the library, where he found a copy of The Secrets of the Darkest Art. Dumbledore retrieved the book when he found that Tom had found it, but it was too late.
Tom had already murdered Myrtle and his grandparents by the time he questioned Slughorn. Tom was wearing the ring when that occurred. He would have been sixteen, turning seventeen on January first.
Slughorn, who had a weakness for the knowledgeable and those that buttered him up, told Tom of what Tom already knew. All Tom wanted to know was what was the maximum number that one could create.
The book was the same one that Hermione summoned on the way to Dumbledore's funeral.

Because if he didn't show up Harry couldn't defeat Voldemort, he knew he needed to keep up the act even if it meant his death. If Snape didn't show Voldemort would get suspicious & might of even left the battle to protect himself, Voldemort only attacked Hogwarts because he believed he was the master of the Elder Wand & unbeatable at that point. If he knew the truth he wouldn't risk his life to attack Harry again.
Also remember Snape had a death wish, he wanted to die. It was only because of Dumbledore he didn't kill himself, he gave him a new purpose "protect Harry from Voldemort." He followed Dumbledore's plan & did want was needed to help bring down Voldemort.
At the end he went to Voldemort knowing he'd die which he was fine with, because he no longer needed to protect Harry from Voldemort. He (like Dumbledore) knew Harry would win & so he could finally die & be reunited with Lilly (like he wanted).

Why would Voldemort tell his followers? Because it required such a convoluted and precise spell to use a horcrux to come back. If it were just "bestowing immortality," then it would make sense to keep it secret from everyone. But when it involves being almost completely powerless until someone does specific things and says specific words to bring you back, then it would make sense to tell all of them something, even if each one only got a disguised or misleading piece of the truth and none of them were permitted to talk to the others about it.

I think Snape knew and Voldemort knew he did. It would explain why Voldemort “trusted” Snape above all others and kept him so close. Voldemort surely knew that if Severus could keep *that* secret he was probably a devotee. Voldemort would have been incapable of trusting someone else, so there must have been a more objective reason why he “favored” Severus over his other Death Eaters.

Love potion or no, for a wealthy person or even aristocrat in pre-ww2 England to just dump his wife and leave his trueborn son behind would not only be utterly unthinkable, Tom would've found his way to his family almost instantly. Riddle Sr. might have not wanted these relations, but pre-war society in England being what it was and with the Riddles likely being nobles, either the orphanage, or the (wizarding) state would've found his family.
