    Randy,
I noticed when you were moving to the back of the car, just ahead of the muffler it looked like the exhaust pipe was pinched a bit. This could be a restriction to the engine causing some of the power loss.
Diesels just need air and fuel to run. However l, air in needs air out. Take a look and maybe get that section welded in. Just a suggestion.

The fuel gauge might start to work if you take the instrument cluster out and clean the grounds behind.
Edit. Omg that w123 is in good condition, mine has 579000km and little bit rust all around but not in under side of the car, but show what its old beast and it will get fixed if it doesnt pass our yearly inspection here in Finland. Greetings from Finland randy!

Just did some maintenance on my grandmother in laws, that engine really should have a 40wt oil in it. I recommend Shell Rotella, semi guys swear by it, and Derek from VGG in his revivals.

That old om616 should have 10w 40 minimum during summer, I run 20w50 on mine. This car properly tuned has decent acceleration. With a/c its possible to maintain 70 on mostly level road, it will loose speed on hills, and will cruise happy 50-55 uphills. These cars are legendary. To tour surprise you may be able to get more back than what you spend on it. These classics have really appreciated in the last several years.

You’ll need to treat that algae otherwise it’ll just keep breeding in the tank.
Probably easier to remove that fuel filter while it was mounted to the motor (just seen you fo that 😂).
Easiest way to bleed those diesels is to crack an injector while turning it over, as soon as it fires over tighten the injector again.

Randy, on diesel engines you're supposed to fill the fuel filter with fresh fuel before you put it back on. This saves a lot of priming, and could prevent an air lock situation in your fuel system. Glad you figured out how to get the filter off... you couldn't hear me trying to tell you, as you were struggling...😂🤣

One day soon you will put the key in and it will NOT turn, no matter what you do. When that happens there is nothing you can do. The wheel will be locked, the key won't turn, and you won't be able to do anything! Just happened to me in my '82 300D. Only way to fix it is to completely drill and break that old ignition out. You have to break the nut loose from the top of the fuel filter housing before you take the filter off. 15mm that is on top. Then fuel filter screws right off. Remember to prefill fuel filter before replacing it. Might also replace primer pump. Once return line begin to look wet they should also be replaced. Get correct size fuel return line. Replace with care not to damage nipples on injectors. Replace rubber vac line is also tedious but worth it. They run the lenth of the car to a vac tank in the trunk. Passenger floorboards has a tunnel with lines and connections. Easy to maintain once you learn there systems.

This Mercedes might not be the fastest car, but the are very reliable. Tires and oil change for that price isn't expensive. When are you going to sell it? I'd be interested in it, before you do a paint job on it. If you be paint it, don't get the cheap one done. This car deserves better.

Sometimes, if you turn the key off and the engine doesn't shutoff, try getting out and locking the driver’s door with the key. On my W123, when the door locks suck down, that will also shut the engine off as it pulls vacuum. I later found that the brake booster line had a small leak. I replaced the booster line and all vacuum issues were suddenly fixed. Car shut off fine with the key ever since.

Door locks are vacuum operated. So is the fuel shut off. There is a vacuum tank in the trunk underneath the package shelf. They are known to leak. And obviously all the rubber hoses are 40 years old😉
New steering damper and rear shocks will sort the wayward. handling.
Pulling the trim off would allow it to get a paint job it deserves. The factory China Blue suits the car... Plain and simple.
Secondary filter unbolts from the top. 🤫 Also, it has a manual priming pump on the mechanical pump. Black knob next to the primary filter.
If you thought that car was slow, try the 200D with an auto box...

Both fuel pumps are mechanical. The primer pump is in the side of the block. Looks like a small bike tire pump with a round handle. Unscrew it first and pump with the motor off. You will hear the bubbles in the fuel tank if the work area is quiet.

Randy : good job on the old Mercedes Benz. You forgot you still have the fan in front to work on, and also the 2 rear shocks that burst. Stay Safe.

You should get a Snap On filter removal tool it’s just a strap but it’s going to remove the most stubborn spin on filter.

@ 34:00 The "oil filter style" fuel filter. The way to take them off, is by using a 19mm wrench on the top banjo bolt. Not by trying to twist off the filter. Also. There is no reason to remove the filter housing from the car.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. That car is a beaut and a real trooper. One thing I didn't mention about the 240D engine was that they are known as "the little revver". They were designed to rev high like a petrol engine, which is why it doesn't have a death rattle at 75mph......the high pitched screechy rattle that tells the driver that you've pegged it for too long over the red line and it's about to perform a catastrophic fail. Diesels love new filters more than petrol engines too, so you will notice additional power (on a relative scale) after giving her some love. She'll also pull up hills better for you now that there is a consistent fuel delivery and given a few more miles, she will finish freeing up after her long slumber and do her best for you. She sounds so much better after the oil and filter change and I'm sure I heard a different pitch to the firing after the new fuel filters too. One awesome car.
The RF jacking point that had flaking rust around it - that needs to be ground back and cured pronto. It is a common rot area and the W123 had a habit of rotting out from that jacking point, up through the RF A-pillar leg and across the firewall. Ironically, the super-duper underseal they sprayed on kept water and dirt in behind it much better than it kept it away from the metal. So well in fact that if there were any minor points of egress (stone chips and the like) and if not caught quickly, the rot would work its way up the firewall, along the top inner guard rails and eventually it would be just the underseal and some scaly metal remnants holding the car together. I'd love to bid on that baby when you have her ready to go, but I'd need to see what's going on around that right front jacking point and inside the RF guard on the firewall side (where the driver's feet go). Pressing your finger into the underseal, if you start hearing crunchy sounds like you just squished a cockroach, she'd hiding something.....probably something scary. Rust laws in my country are extremely strict and being flagged at the border for rust issues, is a history the car does not deserve (and a very large compliance expense).
