You'd think as an audience member that constantly gets the fourth wall broken it wouldn't be shocking, but EVERY TIME the priest looks into the camera too I get cold chills!!
I didn't know anything about the show going in, and for a little bit after the first time he notices I thought the show was going to shift into being something supernature-related lol
It’s such a beautiful representation for disassociation, her breaking the fourth wall. But him noticing is an even more beautiful way to depict how it feels when your lover sees the hidden truth in you that others have always missed - and how rare, world-bending, wonderful and bizarre that feels to be discovered. Belonging and trust are wild.
I like to think that he slowly bonds with her to the point where he will eventually be able to access her 4th wall too and they have these little side conversations while engaging social events 😂
the whole show is about her disengaging from her maladaptive daydreaming and living in the moment instead of trying to construct a narrative around it. the point of his character is that he draws her out of her head. if he sank into this behavior too it would represent a pretty depressing and shallow end for both of them.
That’s not a good ending. The 4th wall breaking is a meta version of her impulsivity, intrusive thoughts and daydreaming, with her using the audience as a confidante as a way of avoiding intimacy with people in her real life. That’s why she leaves us at the end, she doesn’t need us as a crutch anymore. If he starts doing it too, it’s exactly a good sign.
I think this is the right and correct interpretation. The whole point is that she's almost never fully present in any moment. There's always a narrative distance between her as a person and her experience of life. But no one else in her life ever notices it. No one is ever truly connected with her enough to recognize when she's going somewhere else in her head. Even those who genuinely care for her, like her Sister, can't see it, because even they don't really know her. And that's entirely because Fleabag won't let anyone know her. That's why it's so scary and uncomfortable for her when the Priest sees her -- when he *knows* her. Because she can't keep that narrative distance from him. He's the first person to ever really see her and love her for who she is, warts (or fleas) and all, and that's scary as fuck to someone like Fleabag.
@@jopabr24great interpretation, the only I would add is that on some level Fleabag is envious that the priest has enough empathy to effortlessly connect to someone and see into their secret inner-world, whereas meanwhile she struggles to have any deep connection with anyone else.
My head canon is that every time Fleabag turns to the audience, "in real life" her eyes just subtly flinch, become glassy - and then return to the conversation. And nobody cares enough to notice or inquire - except for the priest.
I've just realised from watching this video that Fleabag is talking to us and internalising to deal with the grief and guilt of losing her best friend. The Priest and Fleabag may not have been able to make it work. However, Fleabag's time with the Priest allows her to see that her internalising and inner monologues separate her from the moment she is sharing with another. We see that by the end of season 2, she is more present with her family and fewer monologues occur. Until finally, the bus stop scene, where Fleabag realises she cannot be with the priest, nor can she keep talking to us, and hence, no season 3. The morale of the story, in my opinion, be present in the lives of those you care about and do not allow yourself to be distracted by the ever-present hum of the world. For when all is said and done, that is all we really have.
It just goes to show that he is the only person that truly SEES her, that notices her and is focused on her. Like a really true, and good and loyal friend or lover. And he gets nervous when she's zoning out, because he wants her to be present fully at the moment, just like he is. Anyways that's just my interpretation
I genuinely can't say if 1:12 this was Andrew doing a prank on Phoebe and she just rolled with it or this was actually in the script, the reaction is so natural that I can't tell. Good writing or good acting or both of them, anyway it's amazing
I always liked the idea that throughout the show any of the characters could have noticed her breaking the 4th wall but they didn't because they're either pre-occupied, dismissive of her or just not engaged enough to notice. The reason the hot priest is the only one to see her do it is because he's the only one who's really truly seeing her and not just looking at her when she does it.
the point is she is dissociating, she is using this idea of "an audience" as someone to talk to, a friend she doesnt have to tell everything to, its like a coping mechanism for it to be easier getting through life. Like how when we return in season 2 its as if we have been gone and time has passed where she wasn't talking to us she only starts talking to us, an invisible friend, when she is in these high tense moments of life i guess, these stressful times where she needs someone to confide in, someone to be on her side and to anyone outside of her thats near when she does this, she is prolly seen as just looking away, its too subtle for people to notice how she is looking off so far into space that it seems like she actually went away for a moment, like the priests says, it seems like you went away most people really dont notice how often people do this so, of course, out of everyone in her life only one person can tell, like its a bit obvious when she turns her head but to most people thats all it is, turning her head away looking at something, maybe she saw something in the corner of her eye, but the priest sees that she really is thinking and looking at something specific, going away we are not actually there, there is no real audience, she is imagining speaking to someone who is always there in every moment of her life so she is not alone, she has someone she can be extremely close with, prolly like how she was with boo, its just a regular woman who has this inner dialogue about her life that is presented as being told to someone else, talking to someone even if it isnt actually anyone can be very theraputic, like writing letters, like in perks of being a wallflower he is supposed to be writing letters but its to nobody, to feel like there actually is someone you can talk to and tell everything to is a better feeling than be as alone as fleabag was feeling thats the point of why we even see her life, we are supposed to be that invisible friend she needs, and after season 1 she prolly was scared to face us when it seemed she was keeping it a secret from us what happened to boo- but when season 2 started she was in another high stress moment so she needed a friend to be around, and at the end of season 2 she was moving on and becoming okay with being alone with herself, she didnt need us anymore, and even so she still has her sister, their relationship has gotten closer that even if she is finally okay with being alone she also realizes that is not alone! and thats why there wont be any more seasons, or at least if it ever does come back i bet itd be the same of she is going through something so bad again she needs that very personal and close friend to confide in the priest really sees her, the priest really wants to look at her, wants to know her, nobody else sees her, i feel like her sister should notice these moments! i feel like i only want a season 3 so her sister will eventually notice these moments that she goes away and it means she really sees her now and maybe fleabag will tell her sister about it, idk idk, just my fanfiction i guess
I don’t know if it’s been done but this is almost a great idea for a horror movie where maybe the characters randomly talk to you I bet it’d spook people
i feel like Andrew Scott did this once as a joke, thinking it would be an outtake but it played into his character and their relationship so well they kept it going
Yeah aight what's the deal with everyone hoping stuff is improvised by actors. You know writers exist right?? It's like you think because they're invisible nah its the actor making up the script and all the cool moments I'm tv and movies lol wtf is up with that
It's definitely not improvised in my opinion. That's because it feels like it's a way to show us viewers that those 4th wall breaks aren't just a gimmick of the show, but instead they are a kind of dissociation Fleabag uses to cope and the priest is the only one who cares enough and pays attention enough to notice and confront her about this unhealthy coping mechanism. The priest noticing the aside is a way to give a deeper meaning and importance in the story to those 4th wall breaks
Her fourth wall breaks r like the intimate judgy conversations we have with ourselves and he sees when she dissociates n gets lost in her self. n I think we all do that at times .part of the reason we can't not be alone

Yeah I was thinking something similar. The most interesting moment is when he looks in our direction but apparently without understanding of what he is looking at. He's glimpsing the transcendent.
I like to imagine that when she breaks the fourth wall she flickers out of existence for the duration of the break and then reenters the reality of the story and he happens to be the only character that notices her “disappearing.”
