    Hosted by Ossie Davis, this 1965 educational film "Heritage of the Negro" was made by the National Educational Television and Radio Center. The film is part of a series called "History of the Negro People." This episode challenges Eurocentric accounts of African history. While the film features many outdated ideas and terms, and contains racist imagery of Black people, these images and terms are used as examples of harmful stereotypes that suppress the richness of African-descended people and their histories. The film is split between documenting the lived experiences of African Americans, critiquing the use of the word “negro”, and educating about the history of Africa.

    I remember on an avant-garde episode of *Happy Days*, Richie Cunningham told his dad, "They prefer to be called Negroes." This term was "respectable and proper" for the time. The show probably aired in the late 70's, but of course taking place in the 50s.

    Can anyone reading this comment point to single nation on the african continent where blacks
    "ALONE" (no outside help from Whites or any other race) built up a civilization (government, infrastructure, etc.) from the ground up that is both prosperous and at peace? Note: south africa can't be used because whites were involved in that nation.
    Keep in mind the majority of the worlds diamonds comes from africa. Also africa has one of the largest gold deposits on the planet. Why is it when I look at the african continent, on a whole, where blacks are the majority race that the people look like they are living in the stone age, living in grass and straw huts while "their" continent is sitting on so much great wealth?

    I know there's a seed planted deep in our souls,

    A state not reality but a state in their mind !
    Molded by the knowledge of his'story left behind.
    In the seed is a life, the implanting not nature.
    Nutured by past seams the present with future.
    A foundation's established there's room for alot;
    Lot becomes fool and full boundaries we got !
    A line was then drawn sown the letter turnt Red.
    Spellings of words gives rise to the dead.
    Good versus Evil as God versed the Devil;
    I AM Alpha thru Omega eye balance the level.

    The fallen believes in loves theatrical obsession.
    Turning truths into sum fanatical re'creation.
    Words become lifted in conversations we raise !
    Our words first spoken, celebrated with praise.
    Our language as art, words expressed not spoken !
    Orchestrated words instuments tarnish not broken.
    A contract, a seal, a script was then cast.
    In the spellings a curse with the writings of past.
    These word enforced Laws this knowledge did flow,
    Watered by man the plants branches did grow.

    I remember watching a film in school, I was probably 3rd or 4th grade, but I remember it because it had a profound effect on how I would forever stop using the word Negro & instead use the word BLACK, as Malcom X was shown in my class saying, “don’t call us negro we did not create that name, call us BLACK because that is what we is!”
    Even after the politically correct word was later changed to “African American” I refused to say or adhere to. It is far from politically correct it is segregation by calling blacks African first before acknowledging they are American. Today I don’t hear anybody but idiots still referring to black as African American. But you NEVER hear the term negro anymore. Nor the term “Oriental” a derogatory term as evil as the word Negro was, rather is. Africa is where blacks in the Americas were all kidnapped from 400 years ago. They have been on this soil, died working this soil longer than most white Americans have… let’s be real. More American than most Americans black people ARE the backbone of what built this nation which we could never repay except in equality. What is so hard about that I simply have never understood. America and the resulting culture surrounds us everywhere. If people can’t take pride in that, they don’t take pride in America. Look in this film how the white people struggle between calling blacks anything other than the obvious… black. Calling them African, negro, spitting out outrageous behavior themselves in how much they reveal their own brainwashing is quite remarkable while others tell it like it is & they too struggle by ignoring the obvious. Black! I thank God for Malcom X for setting me straight & for an all white school district not yet polluted with the racism they later became (Marysville, WA) As children we were subjected to films deemed too offensive for children today. We watched police beat the crap of blacks & the occasional white protesters, some to a bloody pulp, in black & white film, how appropriate? We watched Martin Luther king have a dream and murdered for it. We were the first children our teacher ever had where nobody in her classroom could recall the murder of JFK (we were too young I was barely 3 in 1963) the look of bewilderment or fear in our teachers eyes that we did not experience memory of this was shocking, like a bomb went off. But we all figured out why he was murdered. Because of his support for MLK & his bill for the civil rights act, by far the reason or a catalyst for the reason to kill him, let’s be real. As a child I was told black is the reason for crime, black is the reason for poverty, black is the reason for welfare which today I say white is the reason for homelessness, because blacks don’t throw away their people. White is the reason for crime because white wont give homeless any other way to live. It hasn’t been easy but no doubt the passage of the civil rights act has proved lifting blacks out from poverty simply by making them equal to whites as well as women & gays and everybody else white men have suppressed since dawn of our civilization has proved to be the best thing we have done as a society. It gives people ability to prosper, reducing crime, reducing poverty, but sadly not doing a damn thing to prevent racism, nor to prevent society to create new victims to “legally” discriminate and hate… the homeless. Everything we call them, we once called blacks. Fact is, we all created homeless & have become victims of our own stupidity, black or white we ALL allowed it to occur & need only look in the mirror to find someone to blame. It was the same thing white men had to admit to & that JFK & Lincoln were murdered for when they looked in the mirror & realized they had the power to end it, and they died trying to end hate. Well now we all, white and black, created a new hate and it is prospering in numbers. Homelessness… the new negro of today, & he be white and male. What does anybody gonna do about that? Arrest it? Murder it? Or solve it? I can’t do anymore, I am growing old. It is up to the Millennials to save us from the wrongs we couldn’t solve and the wrongs we created. It’s your planet now.
