Too much of a person's money is spent on housing. Tackling this will solve a great deal of poverty
And it would stimulate the broader economy as there would be more disposable income.

@@mogznwazfor one thing if we changed our planning system we could develop high density medium rise housing instead of the sprawl you describe. Much cheaper for the councils too - less tarmac, pipes, broadband needs to be installed per person as we’re closer together. It’s still concreting over to some extent but far less than normal housing projects
Poverty. Memories. Left school 15. Willingly handed over to my parents every penny I earned till 21. Married penniless at 22. Climbed out of poverty. Now live comfortably at 78. But poverty has been and is the governing factor of my whole life. I live with toes curled under each other and winter days and nights freezing for lack of warm clothes and blankets. I don't now live in that world but that world still lives in me.
And do you like who you are? Would you be the same person without it?
@@mogznwaz Why are those things relevant? You're trying to make some "built character" argument but no one has a crystal ball to say that if he had grown up not in poverty that he wouldn't have liked who he turned out as. Of course he wouldn't be the same person but that doesn't necessarily mean he would have been worse off.

@@musicmikemn I think it is entirely relevant, which is why I asked. I grew up on a working class council estate where no one had a bean. Hand me downs, jumble sales, going without, making your own fun, wearing jumpers in bed at night etc. By today’s standards it would be considered poverty - back then it was ‘normal’. I think it definitely shaped who I am, how can it not? And no I don’t think I would be the same person if I’d had a privileged upbringing. The fear of losing the little I have and aversion to risk is something I think is hardwired into me because that’s the reality of living hand to mouth. I think it made me a better person in some ways - I’m certainly more down to earth and resilient than my more middle class friends but they have certainly had an easier life than me and more choices openly available to them thanks to Daddy’s bank account. Depends on your outlook I suppose. I would say that everyone is dealt a hand of cards - some get a better one than others. But how you play those cards can make a big difference. A well-off friend of mine who had every privilege growing up is an unhappy junkie today. I’d consider myself fortunate compared to him 🤷♀️

Yes, the 'wandering off' has been debunked by alternative camera angles showing who he was talking to (a couple of skydivers had just landed nearby).
Biden *does* act like an old man far too much though.
I strongly disagree with the people that claim to know his mental state, but the truth is that he does these weird things.
Slurred speeches, turning and staring at the press while walking off after a speech. It's bad optics at the best of times, doubly so with the Republicans telling the country that he's senile.
So lovely to hear Rory speak about his mother's achievements. His admiration and love for her is heart-warming to hear.

I hope Labour brings back Surestart for all children. I took my twin grandchildren to one of the first ones that opened and was deeply impressed by the calibre and skill of the staff and the way the children thrived. My grandchildren are now 24 and I'm sure that Surestart was an important factor in their development.
To Rory's dinner with a bunch of lawyers suggesting we should get highly competent people and pay them well. If we did that, Rishi would never have been Chancellor, BJ wouldn't have been PM, and Liz Truss wouldn't have been PM. They might have been able to become backbenchers but if we had a culture that valued competence and leadership, they wouldn't have stood out at all. They are big fish in a little pond.
A choice between a decent old man and an utterly indecent old man. Yet people are split. I almost despair.
Its insane on the surface but makes sense once you dig deeper: Trump offers hope for left-behind and ignored pluralities in rural and rust belt areas.
These are parts of America that have been hit hard by globalisation and did not really recover from the recession - the US has a bigger urban/rural wealth gap than all other developed countries. The democrats have largely given up on these areas - their solutions (e.g. "retraining" miners to be programmers ) aren't realistic or saleable and more designed to comfort their urban voter bases rather than actually tackle the issue.
Its false hope - as well as unsustainable agricultural subsidies to make it seem like he is delivering - but when people have nothing else they will cling to it like flies to a sugar trap.
I watched snippets of a recent rally at which trump spoke. It really seemed as though he could not follow a thought to the end of a sentence. If Trump were to be elected then realistically who would be pulling his strings? The idea that he may be ruling (not governing) such a vast country is very worrying.
I believe Steve Bannon hopes he'll be pulling the strings.

My perserverance continues in trying to get an answer to a question I had sent in but has not yet been answered; what is Labour’s Africa engagement plan or strategy?
It is not a feeling that everything is more expensive - inflation may becoming down, but the reality is that prices of everything are alot higher than they were before.
This is the thing, you have a period of high inflation then those price rises are baked in, and the norm on which the next bout of inflation is based on that higher value. Mad example after 50% inflation a 1% inflation is the same monetary increase as 2% the year before.
Biden is by far mentally sharper than Trump who is quite clearly in sharp decline. Biden’s speeches at State of the Union and D Day were superb. Trump would be talking about sharks, Silence of the Lambs, building the wall ( which he didn’t do last time) etc
Not the biggest Trump guy here but are you living under the biggest rock on planet earth Biden can't even navigate his way off a stage on his own (not even talking about the d-day thing here either) he can't do long form talking anymore without mumbling or start waffling about something that is not only off topic but just absolute incoherent nonsense, we've never been closer to WW3 thanks to him and his team and the Tories. Trump will run rings around Biden when we get to the debates whether you like Trump or not the man is not on a sharp decline and if you genuinely think that you need to seriously open your eyes.
Yeah, Biden is aging naturally and I don't think him slurring his words every now and then should be an issue. Trump's health on the other hand is genuinely in a state of decline and he had moments where he paused for up to a minute without saying anything and he makes up all kinds of new words.

The US economy is strong. Not like the UK.
The average person doesn't care about economic trends or indicators. What they feel is stuff is more expensive therefore, to them, the economy is terrible and its Biden's fault. Whether or not this is rational, its what people think.

Oh god I hate voxpops. It's got to the point where, if I'm listening to the radio news and they ask some random person in a shopping centre, who doesn't know Westminster from Axminster, what they think about the story of the day, I switch off the radio.
Campbell owes his audience an apology and clarification. Biden didn't "wander off". He moved to his left to talk to paratroopers, just landed, folding their parachutes. Facts are important. Campbell, "Mr Spin", was neither fair nor factual in describing events in France. A fair and sincere apology is required to safeguard the reputation of this show and restore its credibility.
I think there needs to be more emphasis on the fact that it’s a team effort. They need to focus on the team around Biden.
And the Project 2025 lunatics around rape-guy.

What is missing from most would-be leaders nowadays is altruism and integrity. Politicians having superficial charisma or 'being a laugh' never kept anyone warmer on cold nights. Most have lost sight of the fact that the entire point of politics is to make life better for the average person, not merely themselves and their rich friends.
I think rory and Alistair have missed a trick, people are feed up with the establishment mind set, good or bad.
There really are looking for a new way of thinking!
But if that happens too quickly it will be whole new adventure that may end up worse than the disaster we already have! Like Germany in 1933.

About the French elections and their significance. It would be useful for you to interview an French politics academic that has also an historical understanding. There are significant trends similar to the 1930. The fact that reforms of 5th republic to avoid the 1930 mess are under strain. Explain the state of things on the street.

Disappointed that you refer to the 'Meloni saves Biden from wondering off' video, and don't recognise that it was doctored, then framed that way by the NYPost. Original video shows a very different reality - that Biden was very intentional, and very present in the moment.

Thing I love about this podcast is the human side, who would have thought we would witness Blairs Press attack dog trying to charm German stadium officials to let him bring a bagpipe in, so he could annoy Victor Orban, schoolboy high jinx. Rory’s mum sounds great, reminds my of my Grandmother who lived to 96, attributed to drinking a bottle of gin a day, in her mid 80's she confronted a goat in her garden, and was hospitalised, just a random stray wandering Essex goat, she also befriended 'the young man with the funny hair' Keith Flint, they become gardening buddies, because life is delightfully strange.

the problem with our economic system is inheritance and how its dealt with.
Rory: 'clearly something is broken'. Yes, it's wealth inequality. I never hear it mentioned and it's surely a huge issue. The wealth is there, our economies are creating it. But it's not being distributed properly. This has created so much resentment, which populists have been quick to exploit. The rise of populism is not the problem (though it is problematic), it is the symptom.
To think that half of the voters would want Trump in again is beyond crazy. And saddening.

Huge concern in farming that Starmer will bring in inheritance tax changes that will destroy farming families and put food security at risk. Rory must know from Cumbria that not all farmers are millionaires and this is a real fear.

I think Rory in his story of his round-table discussion with twelve lawyers may have missed the real question about politicians' competence. Using Rishi Sunak as an example: he may have been a skilled banker and the lawyers might have imagined him working in their field too - but why should that make him a good politician, never mind a good prime minister. Is there an argument that many politicians are simply in the wrong job, as the recruitment and selection process is so weird? We certainly need to consider this before replacing the Lords with a fully elected second chamber; far better to recruit a wide range of experts to conduct proper revision and scrutiny.
Rory’s mum sounds fascinating, I’ve only ever heard him talk about this father but he surely gets a lot of his adventurous spirit from her too.

7:27 American here. This is a moment that shows how much of a big tent the two parties are. Dems, or at least the ones making the decisions and relaying the information, only seem to be able to communicate with people who are like them. Higher information voters, middle to higher income, with similar middle to higher class backgrounds. Call it ideological groupthunk if you want, but it's really a lack of a representation for americans undergoing the more typical struggles. People who are struggling with cost of living, a slowed down job market, and can't seem to get far. I'm happy to see Biden talk about what he is going to do with regards to economic issues. There's some good stuff there that they can sway people on if they speak to their economic accomplishments and plans as well, because people need to be reminded of it.
The demographic breakdown is a bit different this time around. While both candidates are making inroads with new groups, the two are facing different battles. Trump does better with low info voters who don't tend to vote much. There is some gains made with Hispanic and black but they get outweighed by that fact that independents don't prefer him all that much. While Biden does a bit better with independents, his problem is that he is struggling to turn out some core parts of his base (mainly due to Gaza).

All this talk about Biden's age and looking a bit 'wandery' but why are neither of you mentioning that Trump is only 4 years younger, is much fatter (bluntly) and there are shots of him needing help to walk up ramps etc. I think both are too old to rule the US but Trump mentally is the one I have concerns about.
Crooked media has a focus group called the Wilderness and in one group in Atlanta they interviewed young black people and asked who they were going to vote for. They had complaints about Biden and the cost of living. They ended up saying they were going to vote for Biden because Trump is crazy.
They are both too old. The hypocrisy of the right re this matter, though, and the outright propaganda and lies, is both totally unsurprising and quite awful.
Yes they are both old but Biden comes off as more senile than Trump. Trump is constantly going around giving speeches, so even if his age shows it'll be out of the publics mind because Trump would already done something else. Compare that to Biden who rarely gives speeches or does public interviews, so his slow manner sticks in the public minds longer whenever he has an unflattering moment.

I find it hard to take Rory seriously when I see him talking about poverty and the importance of it being reduced when you look at his voting record on these kind of issues when he was an MP.

Valid point about telling people how to feel about their economic situation. The fact is that IF Trump told his voters everything's great under the SAME circumstances*, they wouldn't be complaining. These are the same people that have been spotted wearing "Real men wear diapers" tshirts AND diapers!

This is not a Trump or Democrat or Republican thing. It's basic political polarization. Republicans felt better under Trump's economy, and Democrats feel better under Bidens economy. I know it's fun to pretend Trump or Republicans voters are all dumb and immoral, and Democrat voters are rational and good, but they're guilty of the same shit.
I'm American and a political junkie. Compared to my wife, she still doesn't believe that Trump will run again, has no idea what he's been up to since he was out of office because she tuned him out. This is the case for a lot of people I know, come November, once people are reminded of Trump, there's absolutely no chance he gets elected. It's more of a vote against Trump than for Biden.

The US Election won’t be like the UK one, where it is a done deal, the only question is how big a victory. It will be a 55% chance for Biden at BEST. Which means that in 45% of universes Trump will be president. I suspect it will be closer though… I just hope that I get to be in the universe with Biden… for Ukraine’s sake.

If Labour do not reform public spending so that more proportionally goes to working age people and less to pensioners, and if taxes go up on working age people to pay for that spending, then there is an opportunity for a centre right movement that pitches itself at working age people. I.e. abolish the triple lock and redirect resources towards supporting young families, cutting taxes for working people etc... But the Tories have been dragged so far in a pensioner centric culturally conservative direction that they may be incapable of taking up that opportunity.

I agree partially with Rory about the rise of the far right. The trouble is that our political system has largely allowed a significant portion of our society to fall behind. People feel ignored. They still get taxed, they put up with crappy services and a shockingly bad pension. How can the political class be surprised that people get sucked in by people who highlight their problems and tell them they are on their side. Call them credulous. Thing is they are very very angry. They will vote right wing. On the health service I disagree strongly with Rory’s take that the government should take on the unions, implying that health workers get paid too much. Firstly the pay of healthcare workers has been degraded for nearly all of the Tories term in government. Why do you think so many NHS workers,doctors, nurses and paramedics are leaving for Australia? I’ll tell you. It’s the pay. It’s the conditions. It’s the workload. We do need a different system now. BUT we cannot import the horror of American healthcare. We should look to the Netherlands, Norway, Japan and other top of the table systems and implement one of them.

Small point of information. How much of the American population lives in the cities? 80% live in cities and 20% live in rural areas. So in this discussion something does not compute. I think the analysis needs to be more regionally nuanced.
The real nuance is what counts as part of a city. A lot of what we consider "the city" are just suburbs that surround an urban core, which in combination makes a metropolitan area. People often conflate a metropolitan area with a city, but there is a distinction. Cities, particularly the highly dense inner core are very liberal. However, the suburbs that surround a cities urban core can go either direction politically. So it's more accurate to say that 80% live in metropolitan areas, whose inner core is very liberal but whose outer suburban area (with populations that often outnumber the urban core) being more politically diverse.
@@gaelsarmiento4496 Yet in political analysis you will often hear the phrase that Biden and the Democrats score higher in the suburbs especially with college educated white women. I still think that a more regional breakdown is going to give us a better undrestandin of the demographics. In very red states the large metropolitan ares may skew more liberal especially if there is university in that city center but the smaller cities will still tend right. I just felt that Rorry's statement was not nuanced enough. We know, because we are here that there is a major component of the voting public which right-wing.

The problem with the Senate is that EVERY State get 2 Senators, so North & South Dakota, Alaska, Montana with populations on 700,000 each get 2 Senators & California & New York with Populations of over 40 Million & 22 Million also only get 2 Senators.
How is that a problem, but have to ask what's your "solution".

@@jamonit7169well, the solution would be to do the same thing as The House, proportional representation. You could still have 2 senators, but they could each have a vote size set by the population, so effectively the same as the number of representatives in the House.
Obviously this will never happen, but that would be the solution

I also think you may have misunderstood my suggestion. “Mob Rule” refers to “control of a political situation by those outside the conventional or lawful realm, typically involving violence and intimidation”
I am not suggesting violence or intimidation. I am suggesting a democratic system where voting power is shared equally between all people, rather than some people having far more power than others.
I would point out that this is the way the UK works. When a particular constituency gets too big, it gets split. When too small, it gets merged. Obviously in the US there is no way they would merge or split states, so I am suggesting an alternative.
And again, I would point out that is already the way the House of Representatives works, so it wouldn’t be much of a stretch to say the Senate should work the same. The small states don’t complain about the legislation passed by the house being entirely dictated by the large states. I don’t see why you consider this to be Mob Rule?
I hope the Democrats don't listen to Rory's poor advice. It's emotion and personal interests that sways voters - certainly not to philosophical issues like "the USs role internationally." A woman's right to make decisions over her own body and the despicable consequences of State abortion laws. These are motivating issues.
