I worked for a automotive tuning company in the mid-80s that used Mrs. Orcutt's driveway for testing. We used to obtain a permit from the county to close the road. I did 150mph on it once, but it was in much better shape then. Never had a chance to check out the house so thanks for including that.
Hey guys, happy Saturday! This is a bit of Rt 66 lore I wasn't aware of. A great story of "desert rat" who built a compound out in the middle of nowhere and became something of a legend. Now I have have another bit of Mother road history to explore next time I pass by. Wandering around the house, it looks like a prime spot to come across a rattlesnake or two...watch your step! Until next time, happy trails!
Haven't been there in over a decade. Peterson Publishing used to use that strip to clock 1/4 mile times. Car mfg. R&Ds used to use it when testing prototypes. But please be advised that the strip of road has not been maintained for several years and may be dangerous.
That's a cool story. I like seeing history like this that still exists. The story would have been just as interesting if she got her own highway exit because then it would be an existing exit for nothing now.
Mrs. Orcutt was definitely not a run-of-the-mill individual. Thanks, Drew and Bethany, for showing us viewers her former home and the amazing driveway leading to it. 👍❤ The dwelling's gunports are a genuine oddity.
Yowza! We did that, and Zzyzx Road, and Amboy crater, and Hinkley, and Trona Pinnacles, and a few other funky stops during the pandemic. Gov. Newsom said essential travel only, and we found travel to be essential 👍
Yay another Odyssey video! Hope y’all and the kitties are well. I still miss y’all TOTK streams on Sunday nights but I love that y’all are getting out and exploring other parts of the US and taking us with you.
William Warren and Mary Orcutt had a 210 acre vacation home Rancho Sombra del Roble, Spanish for "Ranch of the Shaded Oak" in what is now West Hills,CA in the 1920s that had a long driveway lined with large palm trees that lead to their front gate. I wonder if they are related. They share a last name and long driveway in common. Today it is a public park that is only about 24 acres.
Dolph Briscoe, past Texas Governor, had a ranch outside of Catarina, Texas. I believe it was 18.2 miles of paved road from the highway to the house ( I think that number is correct). He also had a small airfield adjacent to the house to accomodate his planes and others. Some say there was a control tower but, I never saw that part of the property.
Oh yeah, it's legendary, so much history on that road, I've been there and drove a rc car at 97 mph just to be there and pay homage, glad you found it, guys have been over 200 mph on that road in the 60s and 70s!!!😊
YT algo sent me and this is an instant new subscribe! Any gun ports that don't seem to face anywhere an intruder would approach are likely for critters.
You guys are back. I was worried you might have retired on me. This is such a crazy story. At least it is not in IL because shoveling the driveway would have been tough. This was the first (and probably only) DriveWay Tour I have seen on UA-cam.
Hey friend! Did you get a chance to check out our recent episode on the Lighthouse? Hope you guys had a great July 4th! We have a LOT of new adventures coming up. 😊
Hey u guys r in my neighborhood again. It’s amazing about newberry because lots of famous ppl lived out there as a get away and used either their own planes or went thru dagget airport to go back to la if they didn’t drive ya know. But it’s interesting. U also passed by houses that literally got ate up by sand dunes!!! So if u guys come here again it would be cool if u came to Barstow and go on the HISTORIC 1st bridge which is currently being built a new one next to the old one. The old one is one of those special Metal ones from the 40s and most ppl do not know that that’s an old highway. I belive highway 91. And it was there to Route 66 which is our Main Street and if u guys go over the 1st bridge u guys have been to Harvey house I think but that road and brodge there on the other side is also houses are up by sand because that’s the Mojave river. It’s dirt 90 percent of the time and mainly underground but it’s important part of the desert. So those houses are the end of “crooks” dt and yes the name is fitting 🤣
It would be awesome to see the inside of the Volcano House! It's been on our wishlist for years but we haven't been able to secure permission to visit. Maybe one say soon :)
Newberry Springs is a magical place, I've been invited in by total strangers to stay in their house. And of course Baghdad Cafe and the bundle of light. My name is Bicycle Bob and I approved this message and it also relates to my one question of God.
The United States is massive. Old buildings that are close to a major city are normally torn down and redeveloped quickly. Buildings that are abandoned in a remote location can sit and decay. There are exceptions to that of course. Detroit for example was once major city. Its economy collapsed after the auto industry left. It has a lot of abandoned buildings. The Detroit city government only has the funds to tear down a handful of their abandoned buildings each year.
Greetings Bethany, Drew, wonderful family at Oddity Odysseys! Hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July, take care, and enjoy learning and adventures! Found this little more about Mrs. Orcutt house and thing built near the house. Couldn't find anything how the house looked like, when it was built. ua-cam.com/video/u8bEKZb9AEQ/v-deo.html

I watch her channel. Yes, she made a video about this recently. No, she wasn't the first person to do that. I've seen a couple travel UA-camrs cover this story.

You guys ripped this video off from a dozen UA-camrs who have already done it. Shame on you. Get some originality. And you're way off on the cost of the driveway. Get your facts straight.
Any and all comments creates engagement, which only helps to boost our reach and puts our well-produced, original videos in front of even more people. :)

This is very generous of you. Thank you so much! 🙏❣
I’ve seen many videos on her driveway. First time seeing her house. Thanks you two! 👍👍👍
Fun episode. You've scored another success. Here's to Bonnie Orcutt & her example. Thanks for another interesting odyssey! All the best

Amazing. What a woman!
I'm increasingly seeing videos about derelict and abandoned properties in the U.S. Doesn't anybody go in and tidy up (tear down) these places?

Surprised they didn't just make her a tunnel under the highway to get past the interstate.
Didn't somebody*Wonder Hussy adventures) just do a video on this..? California is a big place do we need to recycle locations???
I watch her channel. Yes, she made a video about this recently. No, she wasn't the first person to do that. I've seen a couple travel UA-camrs cover this story.
Im sad about the house. 4 Miles are 6 km? truly a very long driveway.

That's not actually a driveway, but a county road that connects to a state highway which connects to the Interstate.
The headline is incorrect...
It has been called "Mrs Orcutt's driveway" by countless publications for over 50 years.
