Its a friendship that is extremely close. they live, ritualize and play together. However you notice that being so close can be damaging, feels like your wasting away. so you see what else is out there but your not to go too out there. When music gets labeled a work of art this what they mean. It seems that each note each sound has been hand picked and intricately put together to compliment each other and create a wonderful piece of music. Not just for this song but for his entire album.
Am I the only one that thinks that each of their small injuries is an outward representation of inner struggles that they may go through in their young lives? Dealing with perhaps being on what may be considered the "fringe" of society leads to deep emotional scars. Maybe they are dealing with interpersonal struggles, growing up in general? Perhaps the injuries are just representations of their fears and daily struggles. They find solace and companionship with each other in order to deal with these inner struggles. A deeply moving piece.
Música que me hace olvidar del tiempo .... pasan los años y aquí sigue esta hermosa canción... James, eres una persona especial con tus sonidos en mis oídos. Gracias
I like weird videos like this because you have to think to get some sort of meaning out of it. It's not just there for you to accept as it is; there is room for interpretation, and people's interpretations are always a bit different because we are all different. That, to me, highlights the beauty of music, of film, of art.
Man, James Blake's stuff is so different than everything else, not a lot of people get it. Hell, I'm not sure I even get it, but I can certainly dig it. It's nice to hear something that is in a totally new direction.
I have cried many a tear over the years to this jem of a song. Brings me back to a lot of hard difficult memories. Living in Seattle, living with an abuser, being far from family and friends. Ugh so much emotion int his music video as well. Powerful peice.
Their bodies are changing. They are rotting from the inside and out. They are cut and bruised, yet injuries seem unnoticed. Their preference of diet is changing; notice their propensity for blood, their sensualities to flesh. To mask (or celebrate) this predicament, they assume the role artificially with makeup and rituals. I love how tender they are in making one of their own. This is the most heartfelt portrayal of the beginnings of a zombie apocalypse that I've ever seen.
I think the statement is: To each his own. And that unconventional things can bring people together just as well, if not better, than the subscribed norm. If you dislike this it's cause you're ignorant and don't comprehend the integrity of true art.
You, James are bound to go far with this music, it is pretty amazing, I must say. I could write an essay on why I love your music, but I wouldn't bore you like that, ha ha :')
I think this is about the spiritual/metaphysical birth of an idea or a creation such as this song or being a creative and brining an idea to life. Everyone who compared it to her being pregnant was close but I think her on the toilet with her pen and paper with the door ajar was meant to look like finding out your pregnant with a child but in this case it's an idea. The spit ritual I think was a metaphor of the influence and affect those around creatives have on their ideas and art. Also when she leaves at the end it reminds me of leaving your family and friends behind on your journey to success.
I have to admit to considering both song and video as beautiful in construction, theme and story. Granted, many are disgusted by the manner in which the 'pact' scene goes, but I see it as a brave and successful demonstration of, for most of us I guess, the depiction of the sort of friendship we wish we had. The epitome of beautiful sound aesthetic, the video is idiosyncratic yet it feels beset with meaningful gestures of time shared with people cared about.
i love how james is being very brave with this. not many artists are being as contemporary and abstract as he is. personally i prefer limit to your love cuz of the moisture, flow, jazzy influence, and the video is beautiful :). the simplest explanantions for this video would have to be that they're initializing the girl for a new life. or, they live alternative lifestyles as escapism?
I think it could be symbolic of a lot of things but I think its about her becoming pregnant. The first scene where she's sat on the toilet made me immediately think about pregnancy, the door slightly ajar could be representative of the fact that she feels like she is alone, perhaps because she is the first one out of her friends to become pregnant. Both people playing the piano could be foreshadowing her giving birth to another human being. I feel like the ritual they have where they spit in the bowl is a reassurance from her close friends that their bond is a chemical one, they are now a part of her. Perhaps the next couple of scenes are symbolic of truly letting go of childhood now that she has a child to care for, they paint their faces and the part where they lifted the sheet over her reminded me of those parachute games you would play as a kid. Its also worth noting that when they cut a hole in her clothing and touch her stomach the beat comes back in, almost like they can hear another heartbeat. Also the sucking on fingers is something babies do a lot and could be symbolic of that also.
Maybe the video is like a group of people who have suffered (they're covered in injuries- maybe an illness, abuse, or a symbol for depression) and so are suicidal or dying for some other reason. The girl is writing something in the beginning, maybe a suicide note. Then they do the whole spit thing and she drinks it. Maybe she kills herself and her drinking their spit is like her taking a peace of them with her when she goes. Then she crawls through a white sheet which some see as a symbol of rebirth (maybe life after death?) and they see it as a good thing because she's escaped so they go outside and dance. Then they go see her off on a bus... maybe a symbol of seeing her off to somewhere better since her life was a hard one. Maybe? Anyway, love the song. Have no idea what the lyrics mean.
Kestrels breed, Looking further than I can see Without tact to read She'd take a shine to me Beacon don't fly too high Beacon don't fly too high For all your time Playful crime in rain Worth it being cold Roofing for the lanes A lesson lost again A lesson lost again Cute but I'll take the bus With fees and favours gone Cracks in savers pass And a white that sometimes shone Wanton borrowed gun Wanton borrowed gun Kestrels breed Looking further than I can see Without tact to read She'd take a shine to me Beacon don't fly too high Beacon don't fly too high
I cant even descirbe how this video makes me feel i could watch it for hours its fragile and painful and beautiful i feel it more than i see or hear it
I know what this vids about: The little girl represents someone who is coming of age, or is moving away; the spit even though its disgusting, represents the unshakeable bond her and her friends share. It's about growing up; even though growing up is sad, you'll always have the memories of the times you hold dear
I'm guessing this is about leaving, mainly because of the key line 'Beacon don't fly to high' as a beacon what you use to find someone/where and the further it is away from somewhere, the higher it has to go.
cant we just agree to disagree? like why do we have to fight about this. who cares if one form of dubstep got popular. and who cares if dubstep originated it london.. cause there is a lot of "skrillex" types of dubstep artists that are from europe, so maybe blame yourselves. i mean i love both james blake and skrillex. hell! they should collab together!!!!
I read somewhere that Lindisfarne was an Holy Island, this family IMO is initiating their daughter or sister to start the real life, giving them their strength trough their spits, and when she leaves she knows that life would be hard, so she cries.
[Chorus] Kestrels breed Looking farther than I can see Without tact to read She'd take a shine to me Beacon don't fly too high Beacon don't fly too high [Verse 1] For all your time Playful crime in rain Worth it being cold Roofing for the lanes A lesson lost again A lesson lost again [Verse 2] Cute but I'll take the bus With fees and favours gone Cracks in savers pass And a white that sometimes shone Wanton borrowed gun Wanton borrowed gun [Chorus]
I think its more about the desperate yearning our youth has to connect to each other in a meaningful way. The video may be a stylized attempt at depicting that longing and need to have a meaningful connection with other humans in a world (western) that at its philosophic and economic core, impedes that yearning to connect.
I remember that this video really impressed me when i first watched it 4 years ago or so. But I can understand why people also think that it's a little pretentious.
Although my favorite song remains "Limit to Your Love" I love absolutely all your music and videos, too - I believe that they are successful, each has a message that excites and makes you think. Congratulations and thank you very much. Teona.
I always interpreted this to mean: This is the night before the main character leaves for college or Uni or to live in the big city, and her closest group of friends is staying behind in their small town. They all know it will never be the same when she leaves. They want to do something that will bind themselves together forever, so they conduct this series of rituals they read about in an old witchcraft book they got from the local library. They stay up all night and go wild, eventually taking her to the bus stop to say goodbye.
I really like this video. I completely get it. It's a leaving ritual. Jesus christ James Blake has a great voice, this is so sad to listen to, but gorgeous.
I loved the video! And I find it as one of the best videos ever. Although, I cant help feeling that the music is just a part of video and not the main thing. I only see the video as a story with a music at the backround.
I didn't missed all of the song as I was two distracted by that... vid. I've gotta say, I'm hella confused. I feel like I was just trippin on something... but despite all the bizarre, unorthodox, and unexpected points that I need not mention in the vid, it was still captivating, moving, and evocative. Despite the strangeness of it all the director and actors do an excellent job capturing the nuances of emotions, and the strange but powerful connection between the characters.
It’s wild to think I’ve been watching this video every once in a while for 10 years.
His sound is so lofi yet bassy at the same time its so original
This is so incredibly beautiful. Been watching this for years and I keep coming back. It's haunting
Ikr. It's my go-to crying song 🥲
Been here for the past 11 years. It's aged incredibly well.
This is beautiful. This makes me feel totally at peace with the world.
Way before its time.. I wouldn't be surprised if in 15 years people are still discovering and re-discovering this album.
Well we're most of the way there, so hi.
Just listened to this album for the first time, amazing work, such depth . 12 years later from you comment!
12 years later I'm still on it

i cant believe that this many people dislike this...
this music is just so close to my heart it just saddens me that people dont feel what i feel.

the sadness of your friends leaving/of you leaving your friends.

Never been so touch by a music and video fitting together. It's only love.
if there is a heaven, dj's angels are playing this piece on the way
Wow this could be one of my favorite music videos of all time

James Blake.....is the definition of amazing
I think the statement is: To each his own. And that unconventional things can bring people together just as well, if not better, than the subscribed norm. If you dislike this it's cause you're ignorant and don't comprehend the integrity of true art.
one of the best music videos ever made

james blake is awesome, period.

James Blake Is My God

Kestrels breed,
Looking further than I can see
Without tact to read
She'd take a shine to me
Beacon don't fly too high
Beacon don't fly too high
For all your time
Playful crime in rain
Worth it being cold
Roofing for the lanes
A lesson lost again
A lesson lost again
Cute but I'll take the bus
With fees and favours gone
Cracks in savers pass
And a white that sometimes shone
Wanton borrowed gun

Oh shit! This is where I first heard James Blake!~ I didn't like this but I didn't know he was actually a musical genius. :0
I know what this vids about:
