This video is hands down the BEST soldering video for quads I've seen. Very detailed. Another tip: If you're new to building quads buy yourself a cheap $99 build and start there. I made the mistake of buying lightweight high quality components ($$$) from the start without the soldering skills to back it up. I bought those components 6 months ago and have yet to fix that quad because I want it to be PERFECT. If you start with a cheap build you can just get it built and fix your bad joints as you go, then save the quality components for when you're more comfortable with soldering. Since I spent nearly $400 on my build I'm buying a soldering practice kit and getting some experience before I finish. Would have liked to be flying already though!
Great demo. I'm a complete novice when it comes to soldering. Your video will be of great help, to me, because you explain WHY you use a certain technique, rather than most videos that barely bother to give a clear visual demonstration. Well done.
Damn it. Best video about soldering that i saw in last few days.. I order equipment from Ebay and Alibaba and for now just looking around UA-cam for tutorials. Here things are explained in understandable way, directions are straightforward and exact. Can tell this is work of professional (familiar on how to pass knowledge too). Many thanks mister. Good job
I just started soldering broken things at home and found this video really really helpful. I’ll make sure I listen to your advice and suscribe. You teach also very well. Thank you so much for teaching for free. If there is anything I can do to support you let me know. Thanks!
Great video, thanks for posting. I think most who solder would say your work is certainly more than good enough, but for the next level, you'd want to use much less solder. Those large globs on the pads completely obscure the wire strands. The idea is to tin the pads, not deposit a mound of solder The reason for your "bad joint" at 11:50 is that you didn't use extra flux on the big solder glob or the wire. Solder will flow towards flux, so you want flux the wire end, then heat the solder glob on the board until it melts, then bring the fluxed wire end to the glob. The solder will flow up the fluxed wire with good wetting. And despite the shiny surface, that joint is NOT a good one. You can see @ 12:32 very clearly that the wire isn't wetted. Look near the insulation on that wire. You see that space between the solder mound and the actual wire strands? THAT is lack of wetting, and that is bad soldering joint. Easily remedied, though. Stick a little high quality solder wick on top of the mound and melt a bit. The flux in the wick will give good wetting when re-melted and you'll wick up some of the mountain of solder-- kill two birds with one stone.
Great tutorial. This will be our "Video of the Day" and "tip of the Day" over on the "Propwash Rotorsports" FaceBook page. Thanks for the great video, keep them coming. These "Build 101" videos are great for new pilots!
Thanks man! Great post. About to start my first build, and scared as could be :) I have never dont much soldering, and what i have done was poor. Ive been practicing joining wire for a few days - so, we'll see!
Out of like 15-20 youtube "build" videos, yours is in top 3. Seems everybody who built a drone after 2015, thinks they are an expert: Disgusting dirty tips. Blobs of solder. Mashing the wire down. Heating for 10+ sec. Congrats for doing an excellent tutorial - sadly one of the few.
Darryl 603 Quality wick is already heavily fluxed. I recommend MG Chemicals wick, it’s better than any brand I’ve tried, even much more famous brands like Chem-Wick.

great tip. or you can buy a cheap power distribution board for a few bucks and practice on it
after all these years this video still helped me, thx

Just started on my own soldering, best video I have seen yet. Talking about your temperatures really should help. Thanks

agreed, too much tin is used. You should be able to see the strands in the wires. Saves weight too ;-)
Defiantly did not think you were that age, very well done
yet again your video is educational and really easy to understand ... fantastic job mate :)
+Jason Mills thanks!

Thank you I also see you don't push much past the pre tin on pads almost floating your tip on top. I found that to work really well too
great video man. really awesome and educational
Excellent, well explained video, you make it look easy.
very nice thanks .... i suffer too mutch yeatarday .... but now I think I will solve and correct my mistakes. ...
Excellent video. Good job.
Thank you for this informative video. I like all your videos!
Thank you this will come in handy for lighting my model kits.
Just to be clear: is your soldering iron displaying degrees in Farenheit or Celsius? I want to make sure, because it's a big difference! 😅
Farenheit
Great tutorial, thanks very much.
You are the fuckin' solder master brother. Definitely have me thinking - "lower temperature, more window of control....." thank you!
Very detailed explanations. Thank you! :)
What kind of tip should be used to solder a capacitor to a board?
Nice video!
However, how would you do to desolder small pins?
I have a qav400 build and have not done much soldering. This video will help but still nervous..

Very good stuff man, thanks for this.
hi do you mind if ask what size or kind of solder wire used to to solder thin wire (il be using it in motherboard pc thank you
Good video, but I'm not building a quad copter. I doing soldering inside of a guitar tube amp. Still a strong thumbs up ! !
where did you get your tweezers those look good? BTW great video helped me out alot
What size wire were you using for your signal wires?
This was super helpful.
Great video. Very helpful.
Hi I was curious to know what type of school you attended and what degree did you obtain? I have some work experience just no school to back it up.
what is the term bridge i hear sometimes soldering people dont like it happening
thank you for the awesome tutorial!
thanks for the video. So far best video for soldering. What did you used for filming this video ? how do you zoom to a small parts ?
thanks buddy. canon 6d with macro lens
I'm happy to have a go now thank you
2015 dam I been under rock I just learned about fpv in 2019
can a cheap soldering can do the goob?
very helpful, I've been doing it wrong. mashed the wire into solder. lol. thanks
The best way to learn how to solder, is to buy some cheap DIY kits and practice soldering. Flux the wick for best results
Darryl 603 Quality wick is already heavily fluxed. I recommend MG Chemicals wick, it’s better than any brand I’ve tried, even much more famous brands like Chem-Wick.
how can i de-solder my wires incase i need to separate them again and replace ?
Very cool Stuff thanks man.
thank you.
Wich solder tip do you use to solder XT60 connectors?
+xuxusito same tip. I forgot to show it but I'll show it on the next build video
so no tip with a flat surface (scissile) for max. contact ?
or more heat for the larger copper/metal amount to transfer heat to ?
Good Job !! :D
Iam building a tinywhooped i am having a problem soldering and i think the problem is my soldering rod because it's just $3 help plsssss
Can you sell me one of those mini-vice's you use in the video?
I'm older than that :)
You help me alot. Thanks :-)
+Zeissler Music you're welcome. glad I could help :)
How much are they?
thanks !
Nice video, but waiting for the Zuul video ;-)
+Tor Skurdal it's next :)
Great. Really lokking forward to that :-)
AWESOME
tweezers mate, not pliers thingys
I leaned from my dad to sodter
You make nice videos but I'd bet my bottom dollar that you aren't old enough now to buy a beer.
So?
Oh wow 😦 I was doing it so wrong... no wonder my solder points were so ugly
Shit, 5 years old, and still a really helpful guide. Why can't teachers find these not-outdated videos?
The reason most teachers do not link to these videos is the bad language.
Vote for Pedro
USE FLUX
Is he trying to say he is 38 years old?
talking is too fast and the black board is distracting

Why do you yanks pronounce it 'soder' when its spelled ''solder'. Drives me nuts hearing that.
+Nick Kilroy Every time I pronounce it like it's spelled I get chewed out so I just gave in. MURICA!!
Nick Kilroy why do you euros not brush your teeth ?
David that was the best ya had ? lol.
Nice try.
As a kid, it drove me nuts, too. Eventually I just gave in and said it the way everyone else (mis)pronounced it.
Lol “yanks”
