Love how at 3:37 she talks about cultural appropriation and the elements of hip-hop that are supposed to bring Black People together against the struggle, slowly loses meaning through white people wanting to look cool and feel accepted, not understanding or caring about the depth of this art. What a Goddess.
I feel ya ,but HipHop was never only a Black People thing, but something that was born in the guettos where both blacks and even more the latinos lived together and tried to go through their struggles... HipHop gave the kids a reason to respect each other and leave the gang life, while focusing into more positive things, creativity and so on. And earning people's respect whatever background you were from. Like the Zulu Nation preached, transform the negative into positive.... also peace, love unity and fun. That's what hip hop (the culture) is all about. Erikah was obvioulsy involved with the culture and her love can be seen in this ode to the Hip Hop culture (not music).

I too didn’t understand the depth of the lyrics and video when I was younger lol even though I lived through every era of hip hop that she put on display. What’s even more dope is that Common was the feature artist and his verse is like a sequel to his classic “I used to love HER” which was also an ode to hip hop and how it went from style to style. ❤️❤️❤️
I thought this was about a relationship with a man but then it dawned on me that it's about the journey of hip-hop and how it helped her as a little girl and was there for her but now hip-hop is disappearing damn she's deep
Omg I’m just now noticing that now that you’ve said that lol. I grew up on this song but never understood because of how deep she was. I’m deep too but she’s ocean deep. She’s from a different world fr
same song title ACT TOO off the roots 1999 album, 3 years before this. also similar concept. i like this video version best. also, boogie monsters did it couple years before with MUZIC.
IKR, she flows on a totally different level, gotta dig down deep sometimes! I was feeling that also, I'm thinking Eryka intended the allegory, bg props, @SunkissNicole/Alright now/ very perceptive!
I can relate to this, being a musician who started at a very young age. It gives you a romantic partner unlike any person. It's a true extension of yourself.
going through how the stages and elements of hip hop changing was so powerful, even though it was another (female) version of Common's "I use to love her", this is poetry, more than the "rap" one would think today, true art from artist!
trippin off how so many folks can watch this video and see how Erykah moves scene to scene through different historical stages of hip hop, how it changed up, experimented and moved through different circles. yet the same folks watch the movie brown sugar and completely missed that Sid & Dre's relationship was the exact same metaphor for hip hop's development. irony?
I finally get Erykah's story about Hip Hop and it's soo true. Hip Hop has changed soo much over the years. Whatever happened to enlightenment, now they sing/rap about things that are irrelevant. Wake up audiences, "It's Bigger Than Hip Hop" (M.K. Asante)
For real, she is SOOO cute! Before she was Erykah Badu, growing up, she was a rapper that beat on walls and cars and stuff for beats. Her name was "MC Apples". Imagine how different it would be if that's the music she made, and not Erykah Badu. Either way, I got love for this woman!
I never realized the true depths of this video when I was younger. This video speaks volumes about the evolution of hip hop and it's state of existence today. damn
memories. i was in 2nd grade when this was out. im 20 now. crazy. felt the song back then and loved it..and i was so young.. but now i rly understand it lol..so dope
I feel like erykah went through each era of hip hop in this video, she notice the game was changing she was also the last of her kind doing it. It's actually genius how she pictures it for that I love this song and video. Don't think a lot of people noticed those thing though.
She dated Wyclef, has babies with Andre 3stacks,the D.O.C,Dj Electronica, she also dated the lead singer of roots...and she was actually in a relationship with Common when they made this song
I didn’t realize as a child. This video is a love letter to hip hop. Showing the evolution and paying homage to every era. Even leaving the future of hip hop up to the children in the end. Beautiful.
and having Kool Herc driving the bus this video is just amazing
Smitch another gem I missed! Thank you!
I didn't even realize it myself too lol

The sound of better times.
I remember everybody from Texas getting hyped because FLIP was in the video. This was before Screwed and Chopped went mainstream.
The evolution of hip hop.. Peep how she changed clothes through out the video for the different styles of hip hop #dope
This is real Hip Hop, not the shit we hear this days
I believe ❤😊Erykah is so poetic ❤❤I love her music 🎶I'm here 2024
She brings back so many memories.
I thought this was about a relationship with a man but then it dawned on me that it's about the journey of hip-hop and how it helped her as a little girl and was there for her but now hip-hop is disappearing
damn she's deep
It's was like Common's "i used to love h.e.r", which he spoke about hip hop as if "it" was a woman in his life.
SunKissNicole she truly is
Common is underrated!
COMMON REALLY IS UNDERATED. He really goes hard but in a NICE , sweet way. I love it.
listen to they say common ft kanye common is nice
HeavyIzThaCrown You're crazy
Legend
agreed fam
Queen ❤ still listening in 2024
Love her aura, I need a Erykah Badu in my life. An incredible artist, women, mom, the list is endless...
I can relate to this, being a musician who started at a very young age. It gives you a romantic partner unlike any person. It's a true extension of yourself.
hip hop was the love of her life the final scene with the white audience shows how they took that from her to look cool
Still mesmerized by this women..
going through how the stages and elements of hip hop changing was so powerful, even though it was another (female) version of Common's "I use to love her", this is poetry, more than the "rap" one would think today, true art from artist!
Common's verse is a beautiful continuation of used to love her. He's a top 5 goat
trippin off how so many folks can watch this video and see how Erykah moves scene to scene through different historical stages of hip hop, how it changed up, experimented and moved through different circles. yet the same folks watch the movie brown sugar and completely missed that Sid & Dre's relationship was the exact same metaphor for hip hop's development. irony?
...I was born into the aftermath of 2:37 and we are still feeling the effects...
Asante)
1:09 I Love that Part! That Bass sounds Lovely and Heavenly! ❤️😇
That freestyle she did gets me every time lol... And the chop and Screw part 😍
This video speaks volumes about the evolution of hip hop and it's state of existence today. damn
I'm freaking out because I've NEVER seen this video and NOW understand why these guys went MENTAL over Badhu
👏🏾 🙌🏾💁🏽♀️🗣” Y’all Share Dat” 💃🏽💜💜😌
simple ... beautiful women, that is soulful rap and sing and is part of the same culture
Lil Flip @ 2:35, and the music became SCREWED... NEVER caught that til now. Plus, he's a fellow Piscean like Badu and Common
jesus christ I just looked it up. Erykah badu is 44, and Common is 43. Goddam
The fountain of youth is real people
+JamesFatherree this video was released back in 2002 though
+The 'L' they look the same tho

Happy 50th Anniversary to HIP HOP,the LOVE OF MY LIFE!
🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊🎉🎉
she's like the Billie Holiday of hip hop. After all the jazz I was raised on, this is like a natural progression for me.
that is beautifully worded, wow
I feel like erykah went through each era of hip hop in this video, she notice the game was changing she was also the last of her kind doing it. It's actually genius how she pictures it for that I love this song and video. Don't think a lot of people noticed those thing though.
Cabaza Ingram some folks prolly thought she was talm'n bout a relationship...but she is talking about how HIPHOP is the love of her life
+Shavonda Campbell true, cuz almost no one would think at that time, that hiphop would change so much .
That freestyle tho🌬
Boaaa
This video and song was way before it’s time. It’s even more dope listening to this as an adult vs when I was a child.
Love of my life
You are my friend
Love of my life
I can depend
Love of my life
Without you, baby
It feels like a simple true love...yeah...
This song will always be 1 of my favs. Erykah gives me chills when she sings. That's when u know it's real & from the soul❤
I would never have another baby in this lifetime unless it was with Erykah Badu..
My first time I sat and paid attention to the video..Deep! Erykah Badu you're smart and very intellectual.
DesinyB the video’s concept dawned on me today.. Hip hop is beautiful ❤️❤️
