  • Hey Horse Lovers! Kyle and I went to New Year's Eve Special Horse Sale in Ohio. We drove 8 hours rounds trip and brought the trailer just in case we find a horse we want to bring home. There were quite a few horses at this sale. I was interested in a few so we will see what happens. I’ll also be showing you all of the horses, talking about what I see, and sharing some of my thoughts with you. The MAIN question is did I bid on any and did I WIN? Watch to see! IF YOU ENJOY MY CONTENT SUBSCRIBE!

Happy New Year Horse Lovers! I wanted to add that I was sanitizing my hands in-between groups of horses, and that having contact is important when it comes to looking over a horse at auctions, it’s unavoidable if you want to check a horse over, and you should! ❤

This was a tough auction to go to and video. I am glad you are able to share your experiences with us. I had a Shire that was a pasture pet and the biggest, most loving baby I ever had. Followed me around like a dog and was truly a magnificent friend to have. I’ve been keeping my eye out for you for auctions around here 😁 but most have been rescue auctions. If you’re interested in a red Friesian I can send you info. Wishing you a Happy New Year, bursting with fulfilling and exciting opportunities. And remember, if opportunity doesn't knock, build a door! Happy New Year 2023 my friends 🎉💕⛄️

With such unusual markings he probably stood a better chance of staying off the slaughterhouse truck then many others. The rather plain looking bay he was stalled with kept trying to catch your attention it seemed, and though you gave it a bit of respect it seemed like s/he knew he was at a disadvantage.

Hey have you looked into Horse Plus Humane Society? If you were serious about wishing you could rescue more they have programs and grants for approved partners. They will also take any horse in that you get from auctions and provide vetting if you aren’t wanting to keep them yourself. It’s a great organization and possibly a way for you to help these horses with minimal expense to you.

Hellos, I thought I’d share something about drafts you may not know. FYI, I purchased one of my horses, my first draft, a 4 year old Clydesdale mare, in Shipshewanna, IN in the early 90s. I still have her 2 half draft offspring so I have a bit of experience with drafts over the years.
I began riding in the early 70s and taught for many years. Unfortunately, I now have some health issues which limit my mobility, but we still have our last 3 horses who will be 18, 20, and 28 this year. We live in northern lower Michigan.
So FYI… I’m not trying to be annoying, but I wanted to share that the term for the hair on a draft’s lower leg is actually “feather” singular, not “feathers” plural. Lots of people get that wrong, but it’s a tell for folks who might be trying to sell you a horse that you have little or no draft experience.
I will add that drafts are typically AMAZINGLY soft gaited and usually easy to train. My Clyde mare was 4 when I bought her and though she was trained to drive single, she hadn’t been ridden except a few times when the owner lead their 9 year old around on her bareback. It took me less than a month to teach her to be trustworthy on trail rides, and most of the basics of dressage. My husband says they are like riding a heated couch. 😁
Oh! One more draft thing. Clydesdales usually are built a bit narrower through the front and tend to have more prominent withers so fitting a saddle is much easier.
Finally, there is a big draft horse show called Michigan Great Lakes International held at Michigan State University in East Lansing in October every year. If you’re not in a huge hurry to buy a draft, it’s a great place to go learn about them. Draft horse folks are SUPER friendly and helpful. I found my Clydesdale mare by printing up a wanted ad and posting it and handing it out all over at that show. It was very early in the days of internet, so there weren’t many online resources then. I met so many wonderful folks via drafts!
And again, not trying to be pushy correcting you. I had someone educate me about feather or I’d have never known either.

    • @freespiritequestrian
      @freespiritequestrian  Рік тому

Not sure why you assume that I haven’t owned drafts before. I own one now and I also have Gypsy Vanners and I’m aware it’s feather, but I don’t really care because that whole thing is ridiculous lol. I own draft horses too. No horses, regardless of breed, have the same saddle fitting tendency they are all individuals and that’s a huge misunderstanding among people. They assume because of the breed that most horses can go in the same saddle or have a similar build. They don’t. I’m a professional, certified saddle fitter and that’s one of the most common issues I come across.

❣💯 That No. 438 Percheron / Friesian Cross was really cool! The view was better of the horses unloading and being ridden into the auction stables. Was heartsick over the very sick Appy and Bay in the beginning. My family raised Appys and they were always robust.
You just have to wonder what happened. I think people should have to have a certification or license to buy a horse just like a car. Maybe a vet in the audience will adopt the sick Appy and Bay together and quarantine them together.
Maybe they can go to a sanctuary horse yard and be restored to good health. Thanks, Kyle, for explaining about the delays from selling trinkets and stuff. They don't realize how far you have to drive or don't care.

I've never owned a horse, and probably never will. But I enjoy watching your channel and appropriate the education you give. I grew up on a beef farm, so different than horses. It would be so hard for me to see all the horses that need so much TLC. Your self control and discipline must be great. Thanks for great content.

Unless there's been a radical change in the last 20 years, there are horse sales in Australia. I stopped going as they were a bit distressing. There were a few ridden horses but most were just herded in. Most went to pet meat buyers.

Would you consider doing a video on how to age horses by their teeth? I've always wanted to understand more about that after an experience as a teenager where I was sold a 9-year-old who was actually 20+ years old. She was retired to pasture with us when the time came, I wouldn't have it any other way. I moved to the city in my early 20s and so my inner horse girl lives vicariously through your videos lol - but I would still be excited to learn about aging horses by teeth! Much love from Australia xo

I once took 5 children and their ponies to a nursing home and put on a show. There was a small circular lawn, two buildings of elderly patients and chairs placed outside for them. It was a lovely, sunny, summer day. My daughter (age 12) rode side saddle with appropriate costume, and the other children 21:42 in riding boots, jodhpurs and helmets. I narrated. The kids and ponies were introduced and rode around and over a small jump and the patients sat stony faced and watched. Afterward, I asked a woman I knew if the patients enjoyed it because I couldn’t tell. She said “Oh yes, it was wonderful!” Very old people’s faces can look stony because everything has “fallen”. I recommend children and their mounts go to nursing homes. Just an animal that enjoys being petted brings joy to patients who have so little to feel joyous about.

We went to a Pony Club event once and slept in a horse trailer with another family. We took our children to the National Welsh Pony show. Our ponies were housed in gorgeous stalls in a magnificent barn. We lived in the former cattle truck with manure plastered walls. We bought it to get to the show. It is a wonderful, somewhat amusing memory that I treasure. Our children, riding in the show, were 11 and 12.

Once it sets in, there's nothing that can be done. Chances arw that little donkey was dead by the end of the day. It is so incredibly sad.

I didn't think much of gaited at one time, but back surgery changed my mind. Ive had nothing but gaited for over 40 years. I've done mostly trail riding and some herding with my horses or a bit of driving. They've jumped over logs, water ditches, swam, rode rough ground with no hesitation or misstep. Mostly I had Tennesse Walkers with the exception of a Fox Trotter / Quarter Horse cross. My ga I ted horses dud everything I ever did on a Quarter Horse, Grade Horse or Saddlebred. I've said all of this to ask, "Why you don't have some in your string for people that could learn to ride on a horse if they could ride a smooth horse rather than the jarring of most 3 gaited?"

Hey! I’m from uk so don’t really know much about the American equestrian ‘community’
I personally don’t agree with big auctions like this one due to the fact that so many horses look sad and quite a few are underweight. Also it’s very sad to see moments like 20:22. That horse had severe injuries to its left hind leg and bum and so many people just watch on. In the uk there isn’t many sales like this so it’s just a little disheartening to see so many unhappy and injured horses been sold there. *No hate toward you, I love your channel!!*

Hi Lynne, and creators too! I bet you are on to something there about the zoning restrictions. Urban sprawl, the subdividing of farmland making what used to be normal ( a pasture with a few horses, and a small barn, is turned into the exception, and eventually made illegal. Then there’s some goof driving an ev coming by every two weeks to see if your ‘lawn’ needs ‘mowing’ ready to impose a fine if you ain’t got a five thousand dollar riding lawnmower in the Quonset.
The poor darlings at these auctions are a national tragedy. I live in Canada and we don’t hardly have our act together any better than the USA, but I just want to say lots of love and respect to people who can build compassion and care for these horses and other abused animals into their lives.
